The author of Can’t Knock the Hustle: Inside the Season of Protest, Pandemic, and Progress with the Brooklyn Nets’ Superstars of Tomorrow, Matt Sullivan, has spent a lot of time with the NBA’s most polarizing team and its “Big Three” of Kevin Durant, James Harden and Kyrie Irving.

So when he says that there is a possibility that Nets general manager Sean Marks would be open to considering trade offers for Irving, who didn’t play in the final three games of Brooklyn’s season-ending seven-game series against the Bucks due to an ankle injury and also didn’t participate in the league’s playoff bubble in 2020, we’re inclined to listen.

Appearing on the Celtics Lab 52 podcast, Sullivan hinted that Marks might be willing to break up Brooklyn’s Big Three by dealing his 29-year-old star point guard, and not just for on-court reasons.

“I’ve heard that Nets ownership was quite upset with Kyrie’s ‘pause,’ especially that maskless party that turned his psuedo-paternity leave into more like a COVID suspension,” Sullivan said. “And in the last week I’ve heard rumblings — whispers, really, because cracking the Nets is kind of like breaking into the Kremlin — that Brooklyn GM Sean Marks would maybe, possibly, apparently be willing to at least listen to a trade offer for Kyrie this offseason.”

Irving, who was traded before when the Cavaliers dealt him to the Celtics for a package of players and draft picks, would likely bring back quite a haul to Brooklyn, and dealing him would give Marks a way to recoup some of the assets he gave up to bring Harden to the Nets. Still, the market for him and the Nets’ willingness to deal him both seem like unknowns at this point.

“Now, I’m not sure what the market for Kyrie is at this point,” Sullivan said. “It’s not like Ben Simmons giving you the headache on the court. It’s that complex personality that comes from off the court. I think it’s been annoying some people in the franchise. I can’t speak to his teammates, who obviously want to play with one of the world’s best and get him back there.”

If Marks doesn’t deal Irving and keeps the core of his team intact, the rest of the NBA could be dealing with Brooklyn’s Big Three for at least the next two seasons (and possibly longer) as Irving, Durant and Harden are all under contract for next year and have player options for ’22-’23.

How much Value does Irving even have for a trade? He's like the one guy you could see walking away from 100 million dollars because he doesn't want to play in (non glamour franchise). I don't see it considering how high their ceiling is with him.

Nets need cap relief for reinforcements.

Durant and Harden have a long history together. There is only one ball and all three of those guys need the ball in their hands. If the Nets trade Irving ( wouldn't be that hard honestly), then it's only happening because Durant and Harden and Nash agree that it has to happen.

Durant and Nash have a history from the GSW. They were a package deal. So Irving will go before either one of them.

Joe Tsai owns the Nets and has deep ties with China. As soon as Kyrie opened his mouth about Israel/Palestine, I knew shit would eventually go off. There is already antagonism with NBA China and Tencent and the issue of Free Hong Kong and child slave labor making Nike shoes for everyone. Irving's off the court bullshit doesn't help any of that.

I can see why the Nets would want him gone. Clearly they need more depth, this past playoffs showed that. And you need cap space to get depth. Trading Irving gets them depth and fixes some cap problems. It's the right move to help the team get over the hump.

This is Kyrie’s personality. He’s diagnosed bi-polar and he’s probably also a borderline. He’s prone to doing stupid stuff like forcing a trade away from Lebron or forming superteams only to decide on quitting a year later

He’s in Brooklyn because his manager, a Knicks fan, originally wanted him to go to the knicks but at last second they changed their minds to Brooklyn because we were horrible the previous season while the nets made the playoffs and Durant could never handle the spotlight of playing in the garden anyway

Well didn’t Durant even say he chose the Nets because there’s a way too much pressure around the Knicks so he preferred to opt for a “chill” in Brooklyn. I think he’s definitely the best player in the world at the moment, but he’s also a pretty irritating person. However, he’s in Brooklyn and for us the story is over. We need to concentrate on us, and let the Nets take care of their problems.

He has little to no trade value. He only wants to play in four markets and he’s unstable, un likable and could sabotage the team at any turn.

Your looking at packages from the Lakers or Clippers who don’t have the assets.

Best you could hope for us a sign and trade for Nunn, Hero, Precious. Which if you’re BK I would highly consider adding depth and shooters.

Irving is also built like glass so the sooner you can get something before his body gives out you pull the trigger.

I have no problem with athletes speaking their mind but be aware if you open it and spew ignorance or “Opinion” that is not well presented then be prepared for the backlash.

That is actually not true per the recently released book that details how the Kyrie/KD partnership came together. The days of managers dictating what star players do are over. This is now the age of player empowerment.

Certainly anything is possible since none of us are privy to anything that goes on with players unless it comes directly from them (if you are to believe what they say). But hearing KD refer to he, Kyrie and Harden as "brothers" I tend to side with KD not wanting Kyrie gone.
