Just yalls opinion but is it to early to compare Obi to a young Amare?? Obi runs and flys just like Amare back in the day. bring the comments
It’s too early, but it hasn’t stopped us from making the comparison.
We’re all rooting for him!
But but the people on ESPN
Amare averaged 26 points per game when he was 22. I do not see Obi doing that. His first year, he averaged 13.
Poor man's Amare/Marion? I'll take it. A better version of Tim Thomas? I'll take that too!
Obi is not quite as coordinated as Amare, but there are alot of similarities. All I can say is that Toppin looks vastly better than last season. He still needs more physical power and more work on his defense but he is definitely a NBA caliber player. It will be interesting to see how his game grows over the season.
It's Obi's speed that most stands out to me- he's like a cheetah
Obi's development so far on his 2nd year bodes well for the knicks.Yes he plays the same position as the team's superstar, i seem like the old pacers where i think granger is just being backed up by the young paul george. Obi will be an insurance policy this season in case Randle misses time.
If Obi continues to develop and shows a potential to be a star, if the knicks still wants to chase a superstar in the future maybe an emerging Obi can now be the centerpiece of the package, teams might not insist in getting RJ, keeping the young core intact.
Maybe a package for Fox in the future? The king are not high on Marvin Bagley. Maybe in a year or 2 Obi can be a player that can help the knicks get a young superstar.
For now, im enjoying the steps Obi is showing in his game. Im hoping to see more small ball line up for the knicks in the future.
I think you're safe from roasting here. Many of us were making the same way-too-early comparisons LAST preseason when Obi started off strong. Then the regular season hit and his offensive game flipped to Anthony Roberson.
I'm excited to watch Obi, maybe more so than any other player on the roster. You could see when he started to get it at the end of last year. Now you have the coaching staff finding ways to utilize him and teammates actually looking for him. Obi IS our fast break offense.
Very happy with our last few drafts.
If Obi becomes Amar'e, we're winning a champipnship!

Amar'e was just a freak athlete. Obi is one too but I think Amar'e was on another level. And he was stronger and more powerful. Like last night when Obi got a post up and settled for a fadeaway where he got fouled, if that was prime Amar'e, he would have overpowered that guy and dunked.

We can't do a straight age comparison with Obi. He developed late in H.S., then college, and now it looks like the same in the NBA.
Sure you can compare age, but I mean we really need to consider this exceptional example with Obi and his development.
He has less wear on his body and for sure that matters. (e.g. enter Amare.) But I don't know if he will reach Amare levels, though I wouldn't be shocked if he does.
Anyway, Amare seemed more explosive to me but Obi might be quicker running up the court. And yeah, Amare was more polished but Obi is developing later.
And if Obi gets anywhere close to Amare offensively but plays good defense, then I consider Obi superiour. Really, does anyone remember how bad Amare was on defense?
I don’t understand why there is a lot of talk about trading Obi for a star. I think he can be an important piece for us long term. He is only going to get better, he has not reached his potential. Players develop differently and the one thing with Obi is we have a freak athlete that will work to get better. That is a good combination in my opinion. I like what he brings and how he can change the complexion of the game. I like this team, they play hard and there is no drama. They are fun to watch, imagine saying that about the Knicks.
Much more possible Shaun Marion. Amare was more of a foul line to at the basket player. Obi is 3 point line in. Amare better ball handler.

I don't really remember Marion being anywhere near as speedy as Obi, but I could be wrong (I literally don't remember!)

they just look like they are having fun out there

Amare was in the nba 4 years by then and never had an all star playing ahead of him at PF in Phoenix
No need to get roasted.
His physical athleticism is truly off the charts. He's 6'9 220+ with freakish and I mean freakish athleticism. Hes able to high fly and catch dunks off the oops too.
His potential is sick.
With that said he's still only 23. Starting to emerge. Him playing behind Julius Randle and alongside Derrick Rose off the bench is an awesome problem to have.
Frank. Knox. Never cared for them. Obi TOPPIN? He's the homegrown NY kid who I'm beginning to love.

I'll give folks some leeway on Amar'e being in the league, getting in early- but I just feel like if we had drafted Amar'e, he would have forced his way into the line up with his talent. Yes, he was playing with inflated offensive stats, but the talent was there.
Obi will be his own player. Can we get 15-18 pts off the bench/starting occasionally, this year or next? That would be a win, but clearly short of what Amar'e would have done.
Marian and Amre both played for the same team at the same time and we think one player can be both at the same time?

Amare average close to 30 minute his rookie season, plus Amare had underrated Marion leadership guiding him for 6 consecutive yrs.
Amare had a two man game with Nash who was nasty by himself even. MDA's playbook rotates around PnR and only PnR. Would Malone have been himself without Stockton? Not so much. Only later did Amare develop an actual shot and then some post moves even , towards the very end of his career
