THibs defense philosophy is more about a team scheme as opposed to individual defense...although it never hurts to have great individual defenders
BUT, as good of a defender bullock was, Trae still ran circles around him through pick and rolls and screens...thats why the scheme is more important than the defender himself

I don't see paying Barnes 38mil over two years to back up RJ.
However, I do like Kemba's perimeter shooting.

I would look at guys on teams who could do a fire sale Convington on the Blazers, maybe Vassel on the Spurs. Also guys like Hunter or Reddish on Atlanta might be gettable later because Atlanta is in the luxury and should extend one or the other. 2-3 first rounder…
I wont speculate on a weakness until we get settled in and Kemba is playing a bigger role and Randal works on his shot selection a little more. What are the stats on how much offense is run through Randall? He is leading in assists but i still think we need to pass more, we have enough scorers that the offense should flow naturally and i think Randall is getting too many touches. This is a new team and Randall is doing a great job passing the ball but this team will not win a championship by running most of the offense through Randall. We are a blue collar team, and we rely too much on Randall, he is not a Jordan, Kobe, KD,... they can be cold all game and pull out games at the end but Randall is not that tier 1 superstar, we saw this in the playoffs last year, i think we should emulate the 2004 Pistons. They had no superstars but they were a great blue collar team and everyone excelled at ther roles. They didnt depend heavily on any one scorer and had great defense. I see a lot of similarities.

And yes. Julius Randle is an NBA SUPERSTAR imo. Top 10 last year in MVP voting and just an all around beast and still only 26 years old.
Randle is an allstar, Not a “super Star” and that he contributed in ways last night not just scoring. THe missed putback he makes 9-10 times. Usually a clutch FT shooter. Dude was having a rough night but nearly got a double-double. He is avg 7 assists thru 5 games. Iso Randle only took two shots in the last 3 min. He was passing out. He saw the doubles. Ball has good length and tied him up well.
One can focus on the lead lost, or focus on the lead made. I was enough to win. Boo Hoo that it was uncomfortable way to end a game.
Advice: Stop watching knick games just to see them win. The assumption that its our games to lose can only be disappointing. You miss the opponent game if you see any loss or lead loss as a deficiency. Some nights the best of teams don’t have it. Don’t mean coach should make changes or “bring in Grimes”. LIke Grimes won’t have bad games? He has not proven himself to have good games yet.
We have this romantic notion that Drose can finish all games great. Thats not true. We saw Fournier last night not finish tight. This is more his norm.

Of course Randle will have off games but all I’m saying is he has room still to improve by tightening up his game and better shot selection is one of them. Let’s use Dirk and Krystaps as an example, Dirk rarely took bad shots and Kristaps has the better athletic talent then Dirk but who would you rather have? Kristaps dribbled too much and didn’t have to do all this excess moving, all he needed to do was learn the step back and master it. I think Randle has put out excellent shooting percentages even though he has taken a lot of wild shots and I get it because he was the main source of offense in this team last year but this year with all our options he can still improve on his shot selection. I can easily see him raise his PER numbers even more. Randle does not have the consistency of a superstar during crunch time and that’s okay. So we have enough options this year to wean ourselves off our dependency on Randle… last stretch by committee? If we had a KD yeah we give him the ball in crunch but Randle is not that guy, and once again that’s okay I’m not taking anything away from him. Those wild shots you take during the regular season will not have the same effects during playoffs and we have seen that time and time again. I think that’s his last level up for Randle, shot selection. Then oh boy watch out! It’s also contagious. Championship teams have great shot selection and ball movement and defense. WE CAN BE THAT TEAM.
