Knicks · Thibbs Needs to Take A Stronger Stance With Randle (page 1)

Tommy Beer wrote a great article on what we have all been seeing. Bottomline is Randle has been totally out of focus for most of this season and especially the last 13 games. He is just going through the motions and not bringing that level of determination and effort needed to win an NBA game. Until he gets his head right, Thibbs needs to cut back his minutes and give those minutes to Toppin. I know a lot of it is we are missing Rose. Rose was clearly the on court leader of this team, and he took the pressure off of Randle that Randle now seems unable to handle. Randle may need to try meditation or something but he needs to figure out how to get that fire back in his belly and start giving the 110% effort he was giving last year.

Tommy Beer worded his Randle salary notation incorrectly. The full value of Randle's contract is $117M over 5 years. The extension was for 4 years while opting into the last year of the previous contract at around $20M.

Not for nothing, but if you feel like you are hard core Knicks fans and thought that Randle was making $30M per, you should be ashamed of yourselves. It didn't smell right and it wasn't.

You do understand that $20M is nowhere near $30M? You are off by around 50%

For reference, Julius Randle is making Tim Hardaway Jr money this year.

Randle is having a bad shooting year and it has completely crippled his offense. He knows it, his teammates know it, the coaching staff knows it and the fans know it. But instead of adjusting and attacking the rim with ferocity, getting to the line, focusing on being a great distributor, improving his defense, making sure he is hustling on every play, being a leader, etc. until his shot comes back...he is internalizing his frustration and its only making things worse.

Its like when some players use adversity to drive them, he is letting it beat him. At times you can see this in his lack of effort, his body language, foolish turnovers and shot selection, etc. Some of this is also on the coaching staff. This is something they should be able to help him with- instead of hoping things will just turn around eventually.

At any rate, this has nothing to do with his contract or how much money he makes. Whether some journalist got the exact number right or wrong or if he is overpaid or underpaid for the caliber of player he is. Lest I remind everyone that he agreed to sign the extension.

Thibs' idea of igniting the fire in the belly is to give Randall tummy rubs after losing games.

I think a lot of people are completely missing the point of Briggss’ post. Randle signed a very significant extension. His attitude, effort, quality of play and leadership have all fallen south.

We all know this already though…. Or at least those of us using our brains.

I kinda want to agree here with this salient point. Randle is not performing to anyone’s expectations, his, I am sure, nor ours. The effort is lagging as well, and it is probably a feedback from his shooting struggles. He might not even be conscious of his struggles in this area. But surely Thibs is watching film, and seeing this stuff pointed out.

Is this how Randle is practicing? Thibs is probably right to a point to back him.

But I think most would agree, we’re past that point.

Is there a step short of benching him or putting him into the second unit?

I’d argue Thibs should put some of our energy guys into the starting line up- that might rub off on him in a positive way.

Start IQ and maybe Obi with Randle at the five. Something to try to wake him and out of this funk. He doesn’t need to play to last year’s level for us to win and be effective.

The question I have to ask is why?

Why is Randle playing like this, is it something he's dealing with off the court, is it the right mix on the court?

It’s a very movable contract, as long as he stays healthy.
