I was thinking earlier today that a package of Julius Randle, Alec Burks, that Mavs 2023 first round pick and cash could've gotten us Haliburton, Buddy Hield and Marvin Bagley III. The deal would've saved the Kings $8 million, allowed them to dump two malcontents and given them the caliber of "star" (i.e. Randle) needed to make a push for the play-in tournament they seem so desperate to make. Is this fundamentally worse than what they got back in Sabonis? Are the Knicks/Thibs not fans of Haliburton— a guy who is a CAA talent they obviously have intel on? What am I missing here?

What you are missing is that Sabonis probably has a much higher trade value than Randle. Some of it has to do with his down-trending year, but I imagine that the high level attention he is getting from the media for being a malcontent is also playing in. When you are on the NY stage, you get a much higher degree of positive and negative press. Just a guess, but the Kings probably asked for RJ.

Randle was All-NBA just last season, in the toughest market in the league. That peak has eclipsed anything Sabonis has done in his career. Sure, market value isn't static BUT considering the recency of that performance, I'd have to think the Kings would have had interest if we made an effort especially if draft capital came into play.

My bet is still on the Knicks (though this front office has been the best we've had in 20 years). Remember, we have NYC and STILL can't attract star players here. And despite an abundance of resources, we've been the losingest franchise in the league under Dolan; the Kings at least had those Webber/Adelman teams.

I don't necessarily think that's the case but still find myself wondering what the rationale was in taking Obi ahead of Haliburton. Obi's been a pleasant surprise but I did not see the pathway to scale his game in the league and was skeptical of his fit with RJ. I definitely would've taken Haliburton FWIW because of how flexible his game can be next to ball dominant swingmen.
Randle was all nba last season and won an award but, this year he regressed, is disinterested, nearly physically confronts assistants over whether Microsoft or apple is better. gives his own fans a thumbs down and a fuck off. and sabonis? no all nba no award but also no drama and kinda similar numbers, now if u a gm off a struggling franchise who would u honestly get?

Honestly? Randle. Performing at the level Randle did in NYC last season should not be understated. This place is a meat-grinder, which makes me feel he is the more capable of the two (between he and Sabonis). A change of scenery to NBA backwater-country could do wonders for Randle's psyche and game.

Sabonis and Randle are not the same player, and if you cant see why the Kings would prefer Sabonis you are just not being honest.
Your biggest prop seems to be for what Randle did in a contract year which he has followed with poor play AND poor effort (at times). Sabonis has much friendlier contract and taking back Buddy sucks for us.

Obi is a CAA client. Add in the fact that at the time Randle was considered a lame duck here and the FO and fanbase wanted another PF
Obi’s shooting has fallen off a cliff since the Knicks drafted him. Not only is it perimeter shooting but he can’t finish around the basket unless it’s a dunk. I’m really disappointed by the guy and yes I’ll own it I liked the pick at the time
