Knicks · Solid Offseason, what’s next? (page 2)

TheGame @ 7/2/2022 2:10 PM
I don’t think this team is that far off. I honestly believe that if Rose does not get hurt, this team would have EASILY made the playoffs. The Knicks were 14-17 when Rose got hurt but this team improved as the season went on. If Rose had played 65 games, we make the playoffs. Now you add Brunson and couple that with the continued improvement of RJ, Quickley, Toppin, and Grimes and I think this team is a lock for 5th to 7th seed. Thus, while we probably could use another defensive minded wing, I don’t think we need to make any major moves. Play the season out, get a real assessment of how Brunson works with the team, and then do a major trade at the deadline or next summer. I see no need to chase Mitchell and until we get Randle’s value back up, I don’t see any realistic major trade that is possible without costing us all our draft capital.

A Bridges or Anounouby type SF is exactly what we need, but there's no way for us to land either of them. That's why I'd keep and prey Cam can grow into that sort of role/player as I don't see how else we can add one this season.

I don't think we want anything to do with Bridges after his latest legal issues

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I wondered why everyone kept calling for Bridges and the other Bridges is in deep shit...LOL

I’m glad people see the Mikal Bridges/OG fit but yeah you got to stay in the cut and see if they become available or if another player develops into that type of SF and becomes available.

Yeah we passed on Mikal Bridges for Knox. I was very disappointed that day. I think next move is to raise Randles value so we can trade him because you can’t win a championship with a bone head like him on your team, too much of a liability.

Number one priority right now would be a SF and eventually Randles replacement and a new coach. Thibs is too set in his ways and too old school and doesn’t make the necessary adjustments. He would be out coached in the playoffs by any other good coach.

Chandler @ 7/2/2022 4:36 PM
Ainge isn’t done. I would keep an eye on D Mitchell

There is no way he stays in Utah. Maybe for this season or until trade deadline.

That may very well be a part of the goal as for what's next. Major player development is in order. Everyone's value on the team should improve as a result together with the number of wins.

I like a lot of the takes here, some I disagree with. We basically traded out Burks and Noel for Brunson and Hartenstein, two guys above our timeline for two guys right smack in the middle. Hopefully with limited roster turnover, the Knicks defense can be solid from day one.

Fournier really turned it around as the season continued. I really question the wisdom of trading one of the top 5 3 point shooters in the league. Hopefully, having a high usage PG will open up the floor for a lot of our guys. Running pick and rolls with Robinson and Brunson to start our offensive sets should create better shot opportunities for RJ and Randle. There's a big difference between initiating the offense and running the second or third actions after defenses have been forced to rotate. All 4 of the projected starters have been willing passers during their career, I think that unselfishness will be the key to a strong season.

Between RJ Randle and Brunson I don't really see the need to go all in on a star. These guys are all hitting their prime so it's likely they still have room for improvement.

I don't think Obi and Grimes should get more playing time over Randle and Fournier. What the Knicks need is stability and veterans are better at getting it done every night. We still have two seasons of IQ and Obi on rookie contracts, as long as they continue to get court time I don't see the rush to give guys more minutes than they can handle.

The strength of this team is it's depth. I think depth was the biggest issue in the playoffs and the problem with super teams. Pretty sure Milwaukee wins again if Middleton doesn't go down.

That being said, injuries should be viewed as part of the game rather than fluke occurrences. You can go down the line of playoff teams that were hurt by their lack of depth. Boston with and without Robert Williams was two totally different teams. Boston improved their depth by adding injury prone Gallinari and Brogdon. Great players but it will be a big question of where they will be at next Spring.

Thibs has consistently preached the same basic philosophy since day one. The front office has provided a 15 player roster that can get it done. The team didn't give up at any point last season which says a lot about where Thibs has them mentally. Those pessimistic going forward really need to consider that even with Burks playing out of position, the Knicks were still a .500 team. We would have made the playoffs without Rose getting injured and if Kemba was given a shorter leash. The future is brighter for the Knicks than any time since Ewing's draft.

This is a great take.

Just want to mention that the addition of Brunson is not only add a “PG” but a true leader and well respected player to the team. I say that to emphasize that some players bring more than their stats to a team and I believe he will be one of those players for us. An underrated addition in my opinion.

Lastly we should all be praying that Cam is on his grind right now and comes into the season ready to have a huge contract year for us. Having Cam playing anywhere close to his potential will surely make us a a team to be feared! Go Knicks!

SergioNYK @ 7/3/2022 9:36 AM
I know it won't happen but I'd be content with trading Randle and Fournier for expiring contracts and letting Obi and Grimes start and have bigger roles.

Fournier is not even top 25 in the league of those players that attempt more than 5 threes a game.

Where did you get top 5?

Jimbo5 @ 7/3/2022 2:15 PM
I know he is injury prone and hasnt played much the past 3 years but can the knicks trade Fournier for TJ warren? If he is still out both Grimes as the starting SG and Cam as the back up SF is there to hold the fort. Give Fournier and one 1st round pick with the most protection. After that move the knicks can focus on increasing Randle's value and hopefully develop team chemistry.

3-Pt Field Goals
1. Stephen Curry • GSW 285
2. Buddy Hield • TOT 262
3. Fred VanVleet • TOR 242
4. Evan Fournier • NYK 241
5. Malik Beasley • MIN 240

Not shooters, makers?

If we were interested in Mitchell, we shouldn't have signed Brunson. They both need to play next to a bigger guard.

This 100%! You can't pay over 100mill to 2 smallish guards that both can't start at the same time.

D.Mitchell is no question better then RJ - but you would need some size next to either one of them or it really doesn't matter who's better.

Only way we go for D. Mitchell now is if Brunson is part of the package going to Utah.

Wouldn't sleep on RJ taking his game to the next level. The young man is driven.

Rumor is they want a package including RJ

I’d do RJ straight up for Mitchell. But the Jazz are also going to want Obi, IQ and a bunch of draft picks. Too much. Nah
