Like above, Toppin doesn't have a negative rating with anyone on the team and Quickley is pretty close (he has negative ratings with Noel and Reddish)

https://www.nba.com/stats/lineups/advanc...

My point is that we tell ourselves that certain players are really good, but are they?

I think all of them are realitivelt good but they might not be in the right position to excel.

I legit think RJ on the bench with IQ, Reddish, Obi and IHart would be a monster lineup.

IQ
RJ
Reddish
Obi
IHart

Would excel playing a quicker 5 man out game. The only reason he is a starter is he is the best SF on the current team, not because he is a good fit next to Randle, Fournier, Brunson or Mitch.

I keep saying the Knicks would be smart to see if they can grab another starting SF on a fixed deal. They just need a guy who can be a third scorer next to Brunson or Randle but who isn’t Ball dominant.

Sixth man RJ with the offense going through him more when he does play could be scary. He’s a Iggy/Derozan hybrid player. Not a lot of teams would want to have to deal with after dealing with the starters.

They would have to move both for significant cap space. For all intents and purposes the Knicks are going to be over the cap for the foreseeable future. If anything they need to figure out their abundance of draft picks if Fournier and Rose are worth keeping for another contract.

I don't think the franchise has been this well positioned ever, certainly not in the modern cap era. Maybe you could say with Ewing, Oak and those players- but they never had this kind of asset base, ever!

I like when we review the teams age because it puts into perspective the fact the FO has time to build around The kids and get a star that fits.

But if the NBA can triple that income with the next broadcast deal in 2024 — as it thinks is possible — the salary cap could jump to $175 million in just a few years.

The league is looking for a broadcast rights package worth more than $70 billion over nine years, and maybe as high as $75 billion.

I'm guessing that after watching Mozgov and Biyombo get the bag while Isaiah Thomas got left out the player's union will be more receptive to some sort of cap smoothing proposal going forward. As is, if the Knicks don't pick up Derrick Rose's team option or offer Cam a qualifying offer they will be right at the tax line. The Knicks have been big players in free agency the last 4 seasons. That looks unlikely to continue.

Regardless, from both a roster and future draft picks stand point, the Knicks look great.

I think getting a sense on whether JHart resigns is pretty key. Would love to have him in the mix coterminous with Brunson.

At 19 with the Mavs pick, I like Rayan Rupert and his 7’3 wingspan on a 6’6 body. Another big swing at a prototypical 3&D with PG chops but a wing frame.

If the Dallas 23 doesn't convey, we have 6 potential 2024 picks, ignoring the 7th top 55 protected 2nd rounder.

If the cap increases significantly with the added BRI from the new CBA, the Knicks long term contracts go from good to amazing, particularly where they are decreasing in salary.

I don't recall seeing a healthier Knicks balance sheet in my lifetime.

Only thing that can make it better in the short term is to have the Dallas pick convey this year.

I guess I am re-signing Rose as a player coach. Trying to move Fournier/Toppin for a rotation tweener forward. Then run it back.

gradyandrew @ 4/3/2023 9:28 AM
Nice job digging this one up and good work on the contract outlook.

I agree that resigning Josh Hart will be the litmus test for our offseason. It would be nice to lock up IQ (and maybe Obi) long term. The new CBA will allow the Knicks to offer each of them a fifth contract year. There's also a new apron that greatly restricts teams that go way over the luxury tax line.

My back of the envelope calculations have the Knicks at 134 in space if they don't pick up Rose's option, Josh Hart doesn't pick up his, and Knicks pick up McBride.

Spotrac has the estimated luxury tax threshold for next season at 166. I'm not sure where they get it but I think they are pretty reliable. For 24,25 it's 171, less reliable but still a good ball park figure. The upshot being that Randle Brunson Mitchell's deals are good value while RJ's is right on the line. It's only 23 for next season which isn't as bad as I thought.

If Knicks release Rose, hang onto Fournier they can offer J Hart a 4 year 80 million deal, IQ a 5 year 150 million and Obi a 5 year 60 million and not have to worry too much about the luxury tax. I Hart and Q Grimes will be questions for next year.

Will be interesting to see where these numbers come in after the new calculation of BRI and the smoothing provisions of the CBA. Still think we are in a strong position vis a vis the salary cap and asset management.

My wife left me a few months ago and I'm actually happy because it's freed up a lot of time for me to spend on more meaningful pursuits like projecting the Knicks salary cap 3 years in the future. LOL

20m a year for Josh Hart is too much we cant do that. 4 years 100-110m for IQ sounds very resonable though
