So is it immediately retired or will players be allowed to wear #6 going forward and no one will be assigned #6?
i hope the league had let him him know they planned on doing this. it would be nice to think he knew.

Im thinking the best of Bill Russell did not want this. Bill Russell incredible champion. Olympian gold medalist, 2 time NCAA champion, and 11 of 13 rings. He was a track star also. In the face of adulation he reminded us it was a team game than take the individual honors. He did much of this in the era of institutional and cultural racism. The Celtic organization/Auerbach was very supportive. Bill Russell was a champion and undertood his place as role model but also his limitations and stayed true to himself, not use the labels as leverage. His greatness gave him opportunities to coach and he did ok, but not great 4 years in seattle then SAC for a year. He was also did NBA broadcasts and personally I never thought much of him in that role. Stay with me. They wanted him to be “the Great BIll Russell!”, that not what he was about. Thus his insights were good, but in that era perhaps he was not able to craft a persona outside of “The great Bill Russell”.
I greatly have come to admire him for not using his celebrity as an athlete beyond what it was. He championed racism because he lived it as a role model. He sat with great men in the moment as he had a responsibility to it. There was an honesty about him.
He did not celebrate himself.

Yup. I read somewhere that no more new #6 will be allowed. So Douchezingis is safe.
