Knicks · Give Cam Obi's rotation spot. (page 2)

blkexec @ 12/8/2022 6:38 PM
Hofstra. One main thing we disagree on is giving Obi this much attention. You turned a side comment into a full blown discussion.

Obi is not grimes
Obi is not IQ
Obi is not Frank

Let’s simply let these players tell you who they are with their actions. Last season as a starter, his stats speak for itself.

Everybody said he can’t shoot and he was the leading 3pt shooter on the team.

All I’m saying is slow down on the expectations just because he was picked 8th. Maybe grimes and IQ are better who knows. I’m just giving Obi more credit than you guys. There’s no point in trying to convince otherwise. It’s my opinion of Obi based on what I’ve seen the end of last year and beginning of this year.

With IQ who was blocking him?
With Grimes, same question.

Where they blocked by a franchise player who won most improved or whatever award he won. Where they blocked by the best player on the team? Obi plays 1 position. Randle plays 1 position.

IQ plays 2 positions
Grimes plays 2 positions

Obi is blocked. We should’ve drafted him if Randle was the long term plan.

We should’ve traded him after giving randle that contract.

You talk about Obi like he’s the worse player in the league.

blkexec @ 12/8/2022 6:53 PM
To Hofstra and others who are bashing Obi.

Listen close.

Obi is older than most in his draft class
Obi was drafted as a rim running, high flying dunker. Someone who gets easy transition buckets. Again he’s old so you go into this draft thinking worse case you get what you see. Fast forward he’s still rim running dunker. But now he’s a reliable 3 pt shooters. Some players can’t shoot until they are later on their career or never. So I give him credit for that.

Again Obi is exactly what you see. Don’t like him don’t draft him. But this is his game. So who you mad at? Can’t be Obi. As a 1 dimensional player who only plays 1 position which is PF there’s only so much he can do behind Randle who leads the team in mins. U want him to cook dinner for you? He’s not a rebounder because he leeks out for easy buckets. Defense is just as weak as most forwards in this league including Randle. He is what he is. And at his age you better off finding a spot for him or trade him or convince him and the fan base that we selected a #8 pick to play 15 mins behind Randle. Let’s see how that fly’s during a Dolan type meeting. The finger will not be pointed at Obi but at the FO who know who Obi was when he was drafted. Especially as an older player.

franco12 @ 12/8/2022 6:54 PM
I like Obi. He may not have the skills to go out there and 'be like Randle'.

I think we saw last year that with motion, he could perform.

I don't know if they tell him - Hey, just stand there, stay out of the way- we're going to try and do x with ball movement on the opposite side. Look to make one or two moves off it.

When he has played well, he didn't get time. then there was one game, he got time and wasn't shooting well. He definitely played well.

If you tell me this is our rotation, I'm ok because he has found a way to get through and get guys to try. McBride is energy. When he is in, good things happen.

I would like to see Obi play perhaps instead of Hart and go small with Randle at the 5.

I'd also like to try him at the 3, but with McBride- I don't see how that works out- minute wise.

For anyone asking for Thibs firing, the last two games are proof- because we knew there was better play being held back that needed to be unlocked- we were growing concerned that Thibs couldn't get through.

Imo, we are better off giving that rotation spot to Cam. Who at least brings more defensive energy. Which seems a constant cry from all the "Play the yoots' crowd. Cam is also a possible future piece that we need to take a good look at. Especially as it has been rumored that he may be gone soon. Not saying we should give up on Obi or trade him just that, right now, he is not doing enough to stay in the rotation besides the fact he was a high draft pick (so was Cam) and that we have no one else to back up Randle. With Obi possibly missing some games with sore knee, it might be something to try. In terms of development, Obi needs to work on being more versatile. Playing someone in the rotation may give him that message.

So I'm not saying he doesn't need to improve or show more. But I also think he's in a no win situation. For example, Obi comes into the league and all he hears is he needs to learn how to shoot 3s. Playing Obi and Mitch together will be easy to guard if both operate in the paint. So Obi said ok, I'm more than a quick fastbreak scorer and dunker, I'm a shooter as well. He spends the off season working on the 3s, now hes not only jumping out of the gym, won the slam dunk contest, he's also our best 3pt shooter in year 2.

I believe the kid has shown a lot more, so I disagree with that statement. Obi's problem is fit with this team, sitting behind Randle. There's nothing else he can show, that he hasn't already shown. All he's going to do is improve on everything, which takes time. The issue is not Obi (in my opinion). Just have to decide. Are we resigning Obi to a roll players contract (ignoring he was picked #8). I'm fine with that. Forcing Obi to meet the expectations of a #8 pick? Not going to happen as long as Randle is on the team. But I'm fine with Obi coming in and launching 3, as long as they are going in.

I've said this once before to another poster and I don't mean this as a dig on you directly.

But your statement, to me, is exactly the wrong attitude. The NBA is a dog eat dog world. Nothing is given to you and as a player if you come in thinking that you need to be given the right situation to succeed, you are already behind the 8-ball. You will fail unless something fluke-y happens.

It's the same at any high level, cut throat environment. You want to succeed as a small business owner, you don't cry that you don't know the right people, you show up at their door an introduce yourself and figure out how to push your agenda. If you want to make it in finance in NYC, you best be ready to swim with the sharks and get prepared for your cube mate to stab you in the back for that one slice of opportunity that pops its head out.

Fuck no-win situations. If you want to fuck the prom queen, you best come with you best moves and make sure they hit the mark otherwise you gonna have to wait til 2am when all the leftovers are drunk at the bar and I hope you like sloppy seconds.

Right now Obi is swimming in Randle sloppy second land, to complete the metaphore

If Cavs starter Jarrett Allen wasn't DNP vs the Knicks, and the Hawks starter Collins weren't DNP for the Knicks game the Knicks record would be 10-15 today (Look at Randle stats vs Collins since the playoff).
And if Barrett didn't deliberately injured Murray who scored 36 pts, 9 ast, 5 steals in our last meeting the Hawks would've blew out the Knicks in MSG .. And we be asking ourselves why did Knicks give RJ Barrett an extension, and we need to trade Randle.

Coach Tom Thibs offense does not fit well with half of the players in the 9 man rotation (there's no chemistry). Individual offense and individual defense = Knicks !!!

Rookie @ 12/8/2022 7:03 PM
I believe Cam when he says that he isn't looking for a trade and hasn't asked for one. That doesn't necessarily mean that the Knicks aren't trying to trade him.

Obi being out for 4-6 weeks could change things. I get going with Barrett but playing 8 for 4-6 weeks is not realistic even for Thibs.

GustavBahler @ 12/9/2022 7:53 AM
Cam might be more skilled than Obi, but he doesnt have his motor. You never know which Cam is going to show up. The player or the spectator?

Obi's hurt right now, but going forward, I have more faith in him figuring things out, than Cam. Cam's motor is still a big question mark IMO.

Nalod @ 12/9/2022 7:59 AM
Curious Thibs trying RJ at back up 4.
He is playing like one lumbering big dude these days.

We doing “Obi last year when started” for 10 games, and give hiim that, but RJ’s 28pt run last 6 weeks of season not?
I think Obi role changed a bit this year.

Thibs is holding Randle accountable. That is as an allstar forward! He looks more like “we here” Randle.
We saw video of him doing that in lane fade layup thing and laughed. he has implemented it and its effective.
Also he looks quicker and stronger. Like it or not, he is the best we have right now.

RJ going to the rim and staring to see more power moves were his strength is coming thru. Not “Amare” kind of fast twitcch but he gets blocked and is finishing strong which either gets the bucket or gets to the line. His Shooting % is improving.

That playoff series was very traumatic for you?
RJ did step under him but your implying “intent”.
ATL missing two starters did matter. We won the home game quite handily as we should.
Missing Hunter, Collins and Murray mattered. Nobody is jumping up and down..
Randle has been playing great. Must really bother you?

Obi knee. Was it an event or perhaps its been a “thing”? If so might make sense to why he has been struggling a bit of late. Evaluated for 2-3 weeks? He could be out longer.

I know this has said already but I believe it should be repeated. Give Cam RJs mins.

I can name a lot more players on the current roster who I rather see play over RJ.

With Randle, there’s only one player and that has nothing to do with Randles play. RJ on the other hand. I’ve stuck with him since college. I told my friends at work he might be the better player coming out of duke. Well 4 yrs and an extension later and RJ has regressed. Why?

I’m wondering if the trade rumors for d.Mitchell is messing with his head. Seems like his game been trending down ever since. Regardless of why, Cam is a proven 2 way player who will be cheaper than RJ. If I was the GM I would tell Cam to be patient while I make some room for you. And shop RJ. Removing RJ solves a few issues I have with this team.

Our top minutes players have to be more efficient and consistent. RJ is not.
I think the experiment of building around RJ and Randles are over thanks to JB.
Cam has proven to be our best wing defender at the 2-3 position. Grimes is 1-2 position and deuce is a PG lockdown defender at the 1. RJs defense is not on their level.

Seems like a no brainer to me UNLESS. Cams camp is too impatient and don’t trust thibs or the FO. If cam believes RJ is the future then Cam will always be a backup which I’m sure he rather start or have a path to start. Remove RJ and he will.

Just my morning thoughts on this team and a quick fix approach without selling the farm and starting over. Remove RJ and it’s now JB and Randles team that we build around. Add in Grimes to be the new big 3.

blkexec @ 12/9/2022 8:27 AM
JB / Deuce
Grimes / IQ
Cam / New Guy
Randle / Obi
Mitch / Hart or Sims

Who thinks Obi is soft?

He needs more work using his dribble to break down the D. Thats why Id like to see some PnR's run for him, while he's working on that part of his game.

I see Obi's handle, the ability to change gears, as the only obstacle to him taking his game to the next level.

agree. Would like to see him try to dunk on someone not a guard. Attack the basket. Crash that offensive glass. Let other players know he's on the court when he smashes into them.

Sorry "soft" is the wrong word. That's mean. Finesse. Obi is a finesse player. How's that?

He is not Amare.
Im rooting for hm to heal and contribute.
Anyone see the play he got hurt? Was there contact?
We don't have a back up 4.
Splitting hairs but Cam can sub in for RJ, then RJ can for Julius.
Or trade his ass.
SergioNYK @ 12/9/2022 11:45 AM
I doubt Thibs will go with Sims at the 4 and Hartenstein at 5 so I expect Reddish to get some minutes in Obi's absense. Or he could go super small with RJ at the 4 and Fournier at the 3?

Of the 3 centers, hart has the 3 in his game. That’s why I think hart can play PF on offense by spreading the floor. Even if he’s not a good shooter he’s not afraid to shoot. And teams have to guard him. Sims and Mitch are centers offensively. Sims can guard PFs and centers. Guess I disagreed then talked myself into agreeing.

Hart or Sims can play PF in spurts.

So could Cam or RJ depending on matchups. And Thibs seems to look at matchups and flexible in his rotations. I have faith in thibs that he will make the right move. Todays PF is yesterday’s SF. So we have options. This not the 80s version of PFs. They all retired so we good.
