Knicks · Who is the better deal at C, Mitch 4 years, $60M or Capella 3 years, $61M (page 1)

Mitch was signed to a 4 year $60M deal, Capella got extended at 3 years for $61M.

I don't watch Capella and would guess that he is more experienced, smarter, and better at his role than Mitch, but Mitch ain't no slouch.

Capella	28yo	$18.7M	$20.6M	$22.3M
Mitch 24yo $17.0M $15.7M $14.3M $13.0M

Thoughts?

If I had to guess, Capella would draw more general interest on the trade market. But Robinson's deal is more moveable. Personally, I'm cool with Mitch's deal.

You should also factor in intangibles, such as Mitch‘s post-game interviews.

Capella is REALLY good and underrated IMO. I think he's got one of the best contracts in the league. Absolute impact player for middle tier money.

He's killed us so many times which is what made last night so great imo. Mitch/Jules totally neutralized him and those two had amazing chemistry on the boards with Randle totally cleaning the defensive glass (much thanks to Mitch keeping a body on Capella) and Mitch totally dominate the offensive glass. It was wild.

This is part of why I can live with Randle but prefer to RJ go for a wing who defends. To me the best forumula (with this roster) is
big: Randle/Mitch/Hart
G/F: Brunson/Grimes/IQ/McBride/(whoever replaces RJ and Cam)

On topic (sorry!) I LOVE Mitch's contract and his upside. There's some offense yet to come out of this guy and this is the first year Ive seen him get the ball in the post and he's looked in limited tries

Mitch kind of manhandled him last night. Made me think what could have been in 2020 if we had Robinson healthy.

I think Capela shows more offensive mobility but otherwise is a lesser C. Those points show in the money stats causing the higher salary.

I think this is a mistake though. A common one. But a mistake. I continue to believe the box out strategy minimizes Robinson’s stats but not his effectiveness. Case in point is last night’s statistical anomaly. Robinson got 9 offensive rebounds but only 1 defensive rebound. Meanwhile JR has 16 defensive rebounds but only 1 offensive rebound. The “money stats” don’t show Robinson’s impact on the game. But owns the boards individually on offense and team on defensive.

Also note Capela is 28 to Robinson’s 24. I would expect Robinson to continue to improve while Capela is arguably at his prime.

I’m taking Robinson at 15 for 4 all day and might even take Robinson over Capela on a 3 for 60. That’s likely his next contract.

And Robinson is a stronger more experienced player this year than 2020.
We kept the lead in part because of Robinsons rebounding.

Capella has had the good benefit of playing with Harden and now Trae too, and he is also just solid too in his own right.

I think we can all see where Mitch has gotten better on the defensive side of things, I do wonder if he has a higher ceiling on the O side than he is showing.

SergioNYK @ 12/9/2022 11:43 AM
Capela is the better player right now but Robinson is 4 years younger and has the cheaper contract and I don't think the gap is too big between them so I'd go with Rob.

Things like box outs don’t really show in the stats. Not sure they are tracked that closely either. But our guys are working the blocks for the team rebound. I think Mitch’s abilities are better than his points/rebounds show.

Last couple games had better passing. I see Capela showing better money stats, but I think Mitch is the better big man.

Really nice find.

I think this is definitely a very purposeful thing that the team is undertaking: bigs find a body so that guards can snake in for rebound and GO in transition.

Mitch, Hart, Jericho all up there, phenomenal

BigDaddyG @ 12/10/2022 10:57 PM
Mitch leads all centers who play 20 or more minutes in contested rebounding percentage with 71%. Anthony Davis comes in at second with a % of 65.5, which is more impressive given the minutes and other responsibilities Davis has. But it doesnt take away from the fact that Davis is a beast in his own right.

My friend and I were laughing at Mitch as he was just going after everything jumping over Hornet players. He did not get many but he did not miss by much. Effort was there! He might want to conserve it a bit.

Kai Jones………Other than the blue hair not much there. Good jumper and had a few nice blocks. No offense and no consideration for it. He could have drafted him, but he is not as versatile as Simms and no polish like iHart. It was a good pass. Can’t vouch for his future, but did not show much.
