Grimes

Deuce

For "what they become" I probably flip Obi and Grimes. Whether or not Obi's on the Knicks when that happens still TBD.

This is the way. Erm, the order.

Kemet @ 12/8/2022 7:47 PM
Four players Knicks fans could give Leon Rose credit for (other than hiring two head coaches Mike Woodson & sorry Tom Thibs).
1. Quickley Combo-guard keeper
2. Obi Forward keeper
3. Grimes 2-Way SG keeper
4. Deuce (Charlie Ward) keeper

The big question for the Knicks 2022-23 regular season rotation who's a better fit at SF?
Cam Reddish hustle performance?
Or RJ Barrett 3rd pick performance?

franco12 @ 12/8/2022 8:05 PM
I thought we were going to have to rank RJ!

1. IQ- if he get's he shooting open, watch up
2. Grimes - slowly he is showing the potential- has to continue and not always be hurt
3. McBride! His impact on energy is undeniable the last 2 games- I think he is a player that impacts the game without needing to score.
4. Obi - love him but he is the odd man out with the roster and probably the player it makes the most sense to try to trade.

BigDaddyG @ 12/8/2022 8:54 PM
1)Grimes
2)IQ
3)Obi
4)McBride
And the dark horse...
5)Our upcoming lottery pick.
I like McBride, but I have him lower because this roster is already flush with undersized guards.
EwingsGlass @ 12/8/2022 9:36 PM
Great question and tough to answer. I think “opportunity” will play into this a tremendous amount.

1) McBride - I think this guy walks away with the most hardware in his career. I’m seeing a 6MOY next year and an All Defensive team ticket. The fundamental defense, his length (not height), hand size, foot speed and most of all GRIT make him a jackpot win. I think Brunson is probably the greatest reason McBride will be the best in this group. If he can learn to defend Brunson and learn a 10th of Brunson’s offense, this guy becomes a Marcus Smart type player with other upside. Doubt many here will agree with me, but I actually think he has the best opportunity.

2) Grimes - I think he is the most ready today and hence has the opportunity. I love the extra gear he shows. I see him as a mainstay on an NBA roster. He fits in any system under any roster. I think he is a little undersized at SG to be “elite” and doesn’t make up for it with wingspan. But he will have a long career as a 3&D. Delighted to have him here.

3) IQ has good length and effort. Plays solid D. I just think his shot is fundamentally flawed and he is a bit to much of a gunslinger with the ball in his hands. That said, with the right opportunity he could have been (be?) in the same trajectory as Anfernee Simons or a Jordan Poole. And if the offense was crafter around his strengths, it would skyrocket him up the rankings. Thing is, I kind of want to see him as the secondary ball handler and with more movement off the ball. Think Reggie Miller trying to get open for a 3. A motion offense instead of an ISO offense would truly play to his strengths.

4) Toppin - Hoenstly, putting him last isn’t intended as any disrespect. It’s more that it’s still too soon to tell with him. I think he needs a pass first PG to get him running and he doesn’t seem to be getting that here. A trade to Charlotte with a healthy LaMelo might earn him a max contract. A backup position to Randle lets him scrape at the MLE. He also needs a motion offense, in my opinion. So, without that opportunity I think his upside is capped.

I don't know how Grimes is not #1 on all lists, that boggles my mind

They are and will become.

I think IQ because he has the ball in his hands more, has more potential to impact the game.
But this is a tough list. The only thing that would have made it harder was if we had to include RJ.

Nalod @ 12/9/2022 8:13 AM
Grimes has been a revelation of late. Very complete package and his rise will make this FO look good.
This is what happens when you have multiple picks. Maybe one day soon other teams “Ultimate” chatter sites will be envious of our late draft pick as we have been for years!
Have to admit our coaching staff has developed this kid nicely.

RJ has to hit his shot. If so defense will respect it and he becomes more effective. Simple really.

HofstraBBall @ 12/9/2022 8:52 AM
1. Grimes. Has the complete game for today's NBA. Think he will really start to ball out now that he is getting back into consistent play after injury. The kid can shoot, drive, has the defense and good court vision off the drive. He is going to be special.
1A. IQ. Kid has already shown to be special. Has all the tools. Will continue to build basketball IQ through the years. Kid is shifty as hell. Has the dog mentality and a lot of self confidence. Kid would be putting up huge numbers with one of those rebuilding teams that would give him 30 plus minutes. Said on another thread that he is just as good as Maxey.
3. Obi. Can't deny his athletic ability. Think he just needs to make the effort to work on his handle and moves to the basket. He also needs to commit to hitting the glass. He is athletic enough to do both. Question, for me, is can he get stronger and tougher. Needs to be more physical as a PF.
4. Deuce. The Knicks fan hopeful flavor of the month. Love his effort but at the end of the day, he remains low on expectations until he can prove that he can hit shots. No doubt he will always be a role player for defensive purposes but doubt he gets solid minutes on a playoff rotation if he can't hit a three. May be trying to figure out his role but if he spends too much time doing that, he may lose his opportunity. Guys like Grimes and IQ did not have to figure out they needed to attack and shoot when given their shot.
GustavBahler @ 12/9/2022 9:15 AM
IQ- Wouldnt have ranked him first last season. But his ability now to get to the rim, that great stutter step of his. The improved D, makes Quickley as close to a complete player as we have, but needs to be more consistent. Not the best at anything. Just very good across the board.

Grimes- Would make a great backup PG! (Sorry Martin) On offense, the thing he does best is set up his teamates, great passing.

As Ive been saying for a while now, Grimes might be the fastest player on the team, he has incredible burst. His superior on the ball D, combined with his speed, and ability to find teammates, makes him a natural fit as backup PG. Leaving Quick to be instant offense. Surprised Im in the minority on this one.

Obi-As Ive mentioned in another thread, Obi needs a better handle to get to the next level. If he does, look out. You also cant teach big. And big, and fast becomes more important with with every passing season.

McBride- Im still on the fence about McBride. Mostly about his playmaking. The D is great, the motor. Just want to see more on offense. I understand the minutes havent been there for him because of the glut in the backcourt

Just like Grimes but the opposite, he should be automatic last place

Here are 2 more young players showing their defensive chops

Hart will never show you with athleticism (and obviously he is playing hurt for what that's worth) but he is a smart defender

martin @ 12/9/2022 11:10 AM
I do feel like Grimes and McBride have a chance to make this type of impact too.

1. Obi - His athleticism makes him super unique and his jumper has improved a lot. I think he has some untapped potential as a scorer but he'll never reach that here with Randle on the team. I think he's going to be one of the key guys going out in a trade for a star. Sucks cause he's such a likeable and exciting player!
2. Grimes - Very good, smart and tough defensively as we've seen him make it difficult for some of the stars in the league and we've also seen him have the ability to shoot the three. I wouldn't label him untouchable but he's one of the guys I really want to keep!
3. IQ - Super inconsistent but when his shot is falling he is a good weapon off the bench. His playmaking is underrated too and he's a good defender. Still not sure I want to keep him. Depends on what he will seek! I don't like spending funds on a bench player. We could probably find his replacement in the draft with one of our first round picks.
4. Deuce - Good defender but hasn't shown he can do much else.
Nalod @ 12/9/2022 12:42 PM
Grimes is solid and is looking very in prime Klay Thompson like. Not saying he gets there but he could be that guy other teams wish they drafted!
IQ and Obi are trade fodder. Im not seeing they are starters and lock them up to long term deals after this season. They are NBA players. OBI if he was 2 years younger I could get behind but he is fast approaching his windoow.
IQ extended his career with his defensive chops.
Deuce? Not sure really. Im not seeing he can create his shot let alone hit it open. Im not running him off and he gets another year.

I am near certain they will once they arrive at the minimum FGs defended this season.
