I hear this all the time, and you know what happens. Obi regains his value and thats why everybody is like, ok lets keep him. This version of Obi is a keeper. lol

It sounds good, but at least in knick land, I've rarely seen us increase someones value then trade em. We continue to trade players when their value has dropped. And keep players when your value increases. Not saying your right or wrong. Logically it makes since, when you talking about the stock market. Buy low and sell high. But with knick players, it never seems to work out like that.

I'm an Obi fan, but the Knicks kind of painted themselves in a corner when they drafted him in the first place. The way the Knicks are using him... I'd say it just would make sense to trade him for a rotation forward who can play defense and hit an occasional three.

Jae Crowder, John Collins?

Nalod @ 12/15/2022 2:16 PM
This fracture, was it creeping up on him and its why his play declined before the injury?
When he returns, how long until he gets back up to speed?
Lets see how the team is doing then. Injuries come and go. Maybe Randle gets one?

No to John Collins. He's just Obi evolved to level 2. I'd say yes to Jae Crowder, but I still remember that punk move he pulled that made Elfrid check him. Probably Elfrid's finest moment as a Knick.

I like Obi a lot as well. Impossible not to root for him. I would think the Lakers would be really be pining for some of our guys sitting. Fournier/Rose/Cam and Obi could really help them

How about some kind of deal centering around Robert Covington and a protected first for Obi and Rose or Cam? I don't know how washed Covington is now, but I'd bet he'd still be valuable as a reserve.

I’d rather use Obi for a real impact player, like as part of a Kuzma level trade to net an elite 6th man.

While Toppins out .. I would like to see MitchRob & Hart, and Sims & Hart in the Knicks frontcourt rotation lineup vs the Knicks next six opponents.
Randle is not a CLOSER when half the teams in the league can shut him down in the fourth quarter.
Randle minutes should be reduced to 28 minutes or less this season.

As for Toppin return, as long as McBride, Brunson, Quickley, Grimes are in the rotation they will find ways for Toppin to score quick points.

TLover @ 12/15/2022 8:59 PM
Would like see more of Obi & Sims playing together on that 2nd unit.

Deuce
Quick
RJ or Grimes
Obi
Sims

gradyandrew @ 12/15/2022 9:57 PM
I don't think the chemistry Obi has with IQ or the contract control the Knicks have over him are two things to be traded lightly. Unless there's a clear upgrade available, he fits the bill.

Obi has shown in limited situations the ability to step into a much higher usage role. So far he also seems content with a smaller role.

I think the second unit, especially Deuce Hart Sims lineups, struggle with scoring. Obi should get his spot behind Randle back as soon as he is ready.

GustavBahler @ 12/15/2022 9:58 PM
Obi has shown what he can do when the offense is run with him in mind. Look at how he closed out last season. Now he's mostly used as a spot up shooter. Big surprise, his numbers have taken a hit.

Yes, Obi should be back in the rotation. But with more of a part in the game plan.

LivingLegend @ 12/15/2022 10:43 PM
Knixkik wrote:He should come back to his normal role. 14 mpg behind Randle and a couple of quick rotations alongside him since Hartenstein hasn’t done much this year.

Unless Randle reverts again Obi may have missed his opportunity to really leverage some minutes - even prior to his injury.

Too many games in past 1+ month where he’s kind of invisible and soft.

Thibs going to be riding Julius 46 mins a night - 😏

Chandler @ 12/15/2022 10:53 PM
right now Obi is a backup on any decent team. there are parts of his game which have improved -- shooting, and parts which have regressed -- playing soft, not attacking

our best plan is to feature him more in offense of second unit. he can't just be a leakout and back cut guy.

and i wouldn't rule out situations with him and Randle together. Depends on what the other team is doing. Randle and Obi together have a better chance of spacing the floor than either of them paired with any of our 5s. this should help RJ, Brunson and of course Julius too. SO if the other team is playing a small rotation we migth consider this

This is just something that got a laugh out of me. Maybe others will find it funny like I did.

So the best shooter on team for most of the season does not bring that much to the table? To this team that was near the bottom of the league in shooting 3's. People are quick to forget. I wonder how many more wins we would have had when Obi was shooting well if we made the switch to the young guards earlier. Instead of the traffic cones of Evan and Rose. Obi can never win. He tries to play to his strength he gets criticized for not being able to shoot. He learned how to shoot and play a role completely opposite to his strengths and people still criticize him. Let him go to a team with good ball movement and watch how many people be surprised and how well he does.

Watching the games I'm not seeing the impact of not having the "best shooter on the team" on the floor. If that's due to Randle's imrpoved play or not can be debated but Obi just seems like eating pretzels at the bar, empty calories. If any our youth has to go I'd prefer Obi before Quickley or any of the others

There we both agree. Obi will never be anything special here because he will never get the chance. So let him grow and flap his wings somewhere else that fits him. We will get mesmerized by Randle's numbers in the regular season and watch him flameout in the post season again if we can even get there. Randle is efficient as the roll man to JB but he continues to do what he is least efficient at doing(One of the worst in the NBA in Points per Post). Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

To be fair, Obi is only the best 3pt shooter on the team, not best shooter. He is shooting 35% from distance and that's NBA average. So best shooter is not really a call out.

Obi has to put it together. Grimes also has a floor spreading role, but he continues to find ways to impact the game and bring his best. Obi has to do the same.

Somehow McBride can barely shoot but he impacts the game.

Obi's role is to impact the game, not whatever else you may be thinking about. His role is not just to stand there and pretend he is Steve Novack without movement.

Obi needs to go back into rotation. We need shooting at PF. Sims is really a defensive C and Hart hasn’t shown any shooting ability here so far. We got away with this last few games because it’s a softer part of the schedule

After Drummond had to sit with his 3Rd foul, I thought that Sims-Hart lineup was really interesting. They controlled the paint on defense forcing Chicago to take perimeter shots and were able to grab a ton of offensive boards. That group kind of lacks offense but RJ was able to provide just enough of a boost for it to work. Not sure if Obi could do that in RJs minutes.

Alpha1971 @ 12/17/2022 11:18 AM
I think Obi signs an extension at a good price so does IQ. Both are inconsistent and not getting overpays elsewhere. If we keep him he will contribute uniquely to winning in 12-18 mins a night

The lack of shooting at the 4 will eventually catch up once we face good teams.

Every time I watch Sims around the rim, I'm amazed how he's on a pogo stick. And he also has soft hands. I don't know why I keep getting surprised by him. Kid's a keeper, and if he can develop more facets of his game is going to be pretty dangerous.
