The NBA recently announced the addition of a new performance award for the 2022-23 season: the Jerry West Trophy, to recognize the NBA Clutch Player of the Year. The NBA has yet to release many details about the award.

This site built a tracker for the award. And explains how to use it.

The NBA announced on Tuesday that it would be naming some of the league's most iconic trophies after all-time greats.

The Most Valuable Player will win the Michael Jordan Trophy. The Defensive Player of the Year will win the Hakeem Olajuwon Trophy. And there will be the introduction of a new award: the Jerry West Trophy for the Clutch Player of the Year.

West was nicknamed "Mr. Clutch" for his history of making big plays, including a 60-foot buzzer-beater to tie Game 3 of the 1970 NBA Finals. There are plenty of players this season deserving of that honor. But how should we choose?

Using a model to choose the Clutch Player of the Year

Mike Beuoy has already created a clutch metric over at his site, Inpredictable. His Clutch Win Probability Added (clWPA) metric measures how many more wins a player has added to his team because of his play in clutch situations.

By this metric, DeMar DeRozan lapped the field last year. That passes the sniff test, as DeRozan hit multiple insane buzzer-beaters and earned the nickname "King of the Fourth" for leading the league in points scored in the final frame.

Here are the leaders in Beuoy's clWPA so far this season:

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (2.09) Jerami Grant (1.63) Anfernee Simons (1.44) DeMar DeRozan (1.44) Kevin Durant (1.42) Zion Williamson (1.38) Stephen Curry (1.36) Giannis Antetokounmpo (1.19) Bam Adebayo (1.18) Kelly Olynyk (1.16)

Gilgeous-Alexander has a healthy lead, and that makes sense. He's hit some huge shots this season, including a clutch 3-pointer to beat the Wizards.

This really ticks me off.

A.) The MVP should be named after Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, not "Michael Jordan"; because Kareem has the most MVP's All-Time (6).

And...

B.) The Defensive Player of the Year should be named after one of either Dikembe Mutombo or Ben Wallace, not "Hakeem Olajuwon"; because both of Mutombo/Wallace have the most DPOY's All-Time (4).

But nonetheless, imo, it's stupid to name these historical awards after these guys.

The Kareem Abdul Jabbar social justice award might mean more to Kareem than the MVP. Perhaps Kareem was given input. This was also an award that has existed for a while while this new branding thing would have meant moving and changing the name. Lets Give the league benefit of the doubt as well as Kareem?

I agree the NBA is taking it a bit too far with these labels. Jerry West is the logo. Maybe the logo is being changed? More modern version of a not so looking white guy? Maybe generic male version that does not speak to one race? WE all know its jerry. Mr Clutch also lost 7 finals series mostly to the Celtics.

If Jerry is mr clutch? Do we give the dubious award of “mr choke”? Named after Latrell Spreewell?
Rasheed Wallace technical foul award?
Metta World Peace mental health awareness award?
Clyde Frazier fashion award?
Did they name Coach of the year award after PHil or Red Auerbach?
While we on the subject of labels, does it bother anyone that the Jordan Jumpman is on the Knicks jersey? I know its a league wide thing but the man exacted pain upon us.

Lowkey... Fox is having a killer season. Crazy that no matter how clutch Derozan is in the regular season, it will always be overshadowed by his playoff performances.

Thank you "Shecky" Nalod

It would be kind of funny if they poured over the advanced stats and found that West was way down on the list of all time great clutch players.

You're a funny dude Nalod and in all seriousness I'd like to see two more things.

1.) An international NBA Player of the Year award (which goes out to the best overseas player here in USA). We can call it the Dirk Kukoc award 🤣

2.) An NBA All-Star game of USA born players vs. International born players. I think it'll add a lot of fun to our NBA All-Star game + lots of intensity (dud to PRIDE being on the line).

I like number 2. Making the Nordic and east European racists players play WITH the african players and having them miked up with translation could be fun!
Maybe in allstar weekend we can have the Black vs. White players and bring back that “Make NBA GREAT AGAIN” with Tucker Carlson do the commentary with Charles Barkley. My hope is Sir Charles kicks his ass on live TV when “tuck” steps out of line.
