Knicks · Too many rotation players, who do very little scoring (page 1)
And we arent getting enough scoring from Grimes and Obi. Hit and miss.
If something isnt done by the trade deadline, then I would hope its because the FO has big plans for the offseason. Either way something has to change.
And Obi Toppin is a pretty dang good scorer (when getting playing time).
Now.
If both Grimes and especially Deuce can improve their scoring abilities (just a little) we could easily become a top 5 scoring offense.
Scoring wasn't the problem. It was a strength tonight @ BK.
Stopping the 22 3s allowed was our weakness and game killer tonight.
Nets showed to ight they have several.
Have said all year that we need an elite SG. Was hoping Grimes was that now but he needs more time. Probably best suited for the second unit.
Have said all year that we have too many ONE dimensional players.
Hoping we can upgrade by trading those for ones that are.
Our second unit consists of several players that can be upgraded.
Hoping we can do that by the trade deadline.
However, Ok if don't as long as we get rid of dead weight. (EF, Rose, Cam)
Then hopefully add better complimentary pieces and an elite SG in the draft and off season.

Think time will come where the Knicks will need to run Grimes through picks to get him looks
Kind of the way Houston had those for him.
Right now I see a team of guys that need to continue to develop before we are elite.
From 1-12.
Okay with waiting to see if they do and make small adjustments.
If we are expected to go deep in playoffs, we need a top 10 talent. And much better shooters.
The bench still can improve and develope but it's clear we have regressed there.

Thats the first thing teams will do in the playoffs. We arent built to go deep. We got outscored without Durant and Simmons. That doesnt qualify as plenty of scoring. As I said Obi and Grimes are hit and miss. Just mind boggling to me to create this thread immediately after a loss despite the Offense scoring 115 points and lost by singles digits despite allowing 22 3's allow while acting if "scoring points" is/was the problem.
The Offensive scoring wasn't an issue, the problem was 22 3's allowed on Defense.

Mind boggling that you would be satisfied with our offense after posting this in another thread.

I get what you're saying but the Nets are only 11-25 throughout the previous 2 years without Kevin Durant and 11-25 @ .305% = the opposite of a dangerous team (without KD).They literally have a lottery team/roster without Kevin Durant (just goes to show how great he is when on the court).
So you are happy that we got outscored by what you call a "lottery team"? You make it sound like it has to be one or the other, instead of both. We need more scoring and better defense.
Its been an issue on this board all season. Getting more help, not just defense. Otherwise you are making a case for the status quo.
You can’t have Hart, Obi and Deuce on the court at the same time.
Grimes is running around on defense and the ball isn’t moving. I would like to see more Obi, Grimes, IQ, Randle together. Get the ball moving, speed up the pace and have some back screens, get some switches with grimes and let him put the ball on the floor
Brunson isn’t a point guard. He’s been awesome but he’s looking to score and isolate, RJ the same thing, Randle etc. it’s the same predictable offense every night.
The nets spread us out and had us on skates all night. Last time I check Curry, Irving, Harris aren’t defenders.
Knixkik wrote:Caruso doesn’t score but he will hit open 3s and keep the ball moving. Would be an ideal glue guy for the second unit.
Who goes and who stays for that to be a thing. Your not wrong, but how does that happen?

The Knicks Offense don't have any problem scoring having 4 ISO players in the rotation, the Knicks offensive problems are creating-screens, creating ball-movement, and collecting turnovers from teammates not expecting the pass. And our problem winning games are the defense giving opponents 120 points night after night.
Oh yeah, the other Knicks big problem has become the consistent DNP of a healthy experience PG D.Rose and 6.8 Cam Reddish in the previous 30 Knicks games .....
Coach Thibs play Randle and Barrett the entire 12 minutes of the first quarter ..
At the start of the 2nd quarter a tired RJ Barrett calls all the shots on offensive-end when all four bench players are in the lineup.
When Quickley's talents as a combo-guard would be much-much better.
Or letting the tandem of Quickley & D.Rose call all the shots on offense/defense for 8 to 9 minutes in the 2nd quarter having Cam Reddish, Obi Toppin, and Sims in the lineup.
Please No! I do not want another dribble-dribble shoot-first ISO guard (Ingram) in a Knicks uniform.
The Knicks are great at the Guard & Center spot .. the Knicks forwards spot need help-defense !!!

Agree with so much of what you say here Kemet. Knicks 4 stars won the game in Boston.
Brooklyn is a better team without Simmons but his contract is too big to sit. Maybe with KD it's okay because KD is such an excellent shooter. There's a reason Nets lit it up from 3 without Simmons in the lineup.
Biggest mistake I saw was not fouling Claxton as soon as he caught the ball.
I'm not sure what the story with Rose is. Maybe he is being saved for the post All Star stretch.

Rose and a first round pick (the lesser of the Knicks/ Dallas picks this summer) for Caruso and either Drummond or Jones Jr. Caruso replaces Deuce in the rotation. Bulls are asking for 2 first round picks. A good first round pick (both Knicks picks likely land in the 15-20 range) plus a rose reunion is a good compromise. If it doesn’t happen at the deadline, I can still see it happening during the draft. Bulls don’t have a first round pick this year so I assume they would welcome getting pick in the middle of the first round. If the Knicks came out of the draft with a Caruso trade plus drafted a big wing like Max Lewis, Kris Murray or Jalen Wilson with the other pick, that’s a really good draft.

Caruso is a nice player and fits Knicks style of play but realistically what *added* benefit are you getting for a player who is 6'4" and averages like 50 games a year who has 2 additional years on his contract?
Does his benefit - at a position where you have RJ, Grimes, IQ all locked and loaded (and with IQ, Grimes going to demand more minutes next year) - outweigh the flexibility of having a rookie contract (and recall the last 2 players the Knicks drafted in this range are exactly IQ and Grimes) and perhaps salary cap flexibility in summer 2024?
Caruso may be an upgrade from McBride this year but would be useless in the next 2 years of his contract IMHO
Knicks need more wing players IMO, like 6'7" and bigger who can shoot.

I consider him a player who can guard bigger players (he’s guarded Giannis and done a decent job) plus he can shoot, facilitate and his final contract year has only a small guarantee. So there are options with him. But I’m not trading a lot for him. I just see him as a big upgrade to the bench.

Caruso is my ultimate glue guy.
Wanted him in FA.
But what several fans forget to factor in when wanting a certain player is the FIT and the COST to add them. They focus on the couple of strengths, ignoring the Knicks needs and that players weaknesses.
It's easy to say Caruso is a hard nose glue guy. However, is that what we really need right now?
Especially if it means giving up assets and committing to contract.
As you mentioned, we need two way players that can shoot the three.
Cam, Rose, Deuce can also be called glue guys, but as we have seen, the fit and level of shooting does not fit well with our other main pieces.
Now if it means take Cam and EF, sure.
