Would be nice, but next year might be even better if they hang around this play-in range and it ends up as the 13th pick.
So.
How do these protected draft picks actually work?
Let's start with the Washington pick for an example.
Because this stuff oftentimes, confuses me.
(Thnx to anyone in advance who can explain it to me).

Good resource for team pick details, scroll to the Knicks listing: https://basketball.realgm.com/nba/draft/...
Washington's 1st round pick to New York protected for selections 1-14 in 2023, 1-12 in 2024, 1-10 in 2025 and 1-8 in 2026; if Washington has not conveyed a 1st round pick to New York by 2026, then Washington will instead convey its 2026 2nd round pick and 2027 2nd round pick to New York
WAS 2023 pick is protected 1-14 this year (just like NY’s pick we traded to POR for Hart). If the Wizards end up in the slots 1-14 in draft, they keep pick (and the same thing happens next year but only transfers if it’s in slots >12); if it’s 15-30, Knicks get pick.

Okay thnx so as of right now Washington has the 21st best Record (so if I'm understanding) it's looking like we're going to have their 1st round pick this year.
Would be pretty neat if Washington is able to Hawk down Atlanta for the 15th best Record (currently 2.5 games back of ATL for the 15th best Record).
Looks like we'll be rooting for some Washington wins moving forward.

If Washington makes playoffs (not just play-in), Knicks will get their pick.
Also noticed how our Dallas 1st round pick is only protected 1-10.
As of right now Knicks/Dallas/Suns are tied for the 10th best Record.
How exciting would it be for us if Dallas finishes with (exactly) the 11th best Record?
This season is becoming pretty fun because not only can we root for the Playoffs but also (potentially) look forward to the draft too.
What would be completely wild is if Wizards and Knicks were the last 2 team of the play-in round.
If the Knicks lost that one game, they would keep their 2023 pick while giving up 4 2nd round picks AND get the Wizards 2023 pick to end up with (most likely) 3 first round picks.

If Washington makes playoffs (not just play-in, a legit top 14 team), Knicks will get their pick.
Martin. You just threw a curve ball @ me.
Now I'm confused again.
If Washington's pick is protected 1-14 (not 1-13) but 1-14, how could we keep their pick if they legit finish with the 14th best Record (and not 15th)?
Some type of Playoffs kicker involved or something?

You know what, I misstated the above. It should read: “ If Washington makes playoffs (not just play-in)”.
For some reason, where your pick selection is determined is both about your record and if you make playoffs via the play-in.

This is more simple than you're making it out to be.
If Washington makes a first round, 7-game playoff series, the Knicks get their pick.
So Wiz have to finish as the 6th seed or higher, OR finish as the 7-10 seed and win a postseason spot via the play-in games.
So:
1. make it to the first round: Knicks
2. don't make it, Wizards
IF they make it to the first round and conveys to the Knicks, the pick's value will be based on a combo of regular season winning % and play-off results.
The 8 teams eliminated in the first round will pick 15 to 22, based on their reg season winning %.
Worst of the 8 teams eliminated pick 15, second worst, 16, etc...
Play off teams don't get their own draft lottery picks. Pelicans had a worse record than nyk last season but Knicks were in the lottery. The

right... the play-in is not part of the playoffs. Any team not in the 1-8 bracket when the playoffs start get to participate in the lottery.
I mentioned it earlier and its wildly unlikely but there's some wild scenarios if Wash/NYK are play-in teams.
I'd rather these picks get booted to following year

I get the Wiz picks because the protection lessens, but why the Mavs?

I think you're confused. The top 10 picks go to the 10 worst teams, that is, 21st through 30th.
Therefore, if the Dallas pick is protected 1-10, it is definitely going to convey whether they are tied for 10th best or are the top team all the way down to 20th best team in the league.
So what you really want to be excited about is having them fall about 9 spots so that we can get the 11th pick and not the 20th.
Yeah with Kyrie on board the Mavs pick should most certainly convey which is better than it becoming a #2 (or 2's?) right? They lost last night -- we can root for them to find that sweet spot at 11!
