Yeah the Knicks just had Brock Aller finish his pre 2024 trade season, new CBA guidelines homework and thus fortified their trade assets packaging. Nice.

This still adds up to no cap room. Just sayin'. We are going to have to be careful to stay under the luxury tax.

I get that this was a scrub game but that is a really nice all-around skill set Roby showed there.
Could see him more closely representing a backup PF thubs would prefer vs. Obi
Legit size and NBA power forward and clips showed nice handles, solid looking 3 point stroke and also some rim protection plus a few nice dunks (athleticism).

Could be he is our back up PF next season too. I agree, it offers a lot of flex if Obi is sent.
This.

This is from NBAdraft.net —
NBA Comparison: Josh Huestis/Andre Roberson
Strengths: For the last three seasons at Nebraska, Isaiah Roby has established himself as a high level defender capable of guarding 1-5 at the collegiate level … Standing 6’8” tall and possessing a lean, athletic, 230 pound frame, Roby also sports a 7’3” wingspan that allows him to play much larger than his listed 6’8” height … Isaiah has also displayed great lateral quickness, and great defensive instincts … As a junior, he blocked 1.9 shots per game and also tallied 1.3 steals per contest … That kind of defensive production also doesn’t showcase his ability to hedge off pick and rolls, and switch defenders at a level that projects him to be a multi-position NBA defender … Roby is also a high level athlete, who gets off the ground quickly and paired with his lateral quickness, also has very good end to end speed … As a versatile NBA defender, he brings a lot to the table … Roby also hauls in 6.9 rebounds per contest which is a pretty solid number due to the fact he’s not always down low in the paint when shooting … From an offensive standpoint, Roby is not a go to offensive option, but he has a solid feel for the game, and is an effective passer … His 1.9 assists per game is a pretty good mark for a defensive minded forward, plus he has an above average handle for a forward, and is effective in transition due to the pairing of these two skills … He also is an improving spot up shooter who possesses good mechanics, and is at least respectable out to the college three point line … During his junior season, he knocked down 28 threes, which is almost one per contest … Isaiah Roby’s versatility as an offensive player gives him the ability to become a "glue" guy on offense, passing the ball, setting screens, pushing in transition, and knocking down open shots at the next level.
He sounds like just what we need. A long defender who can match up with long SFs like Jason Tatum or Kawhi Leonard.

Exactly what we need. More glue guys with length, athleticism and shooting abilities for cheap!

Sounds and-looks like Jared Jefferies-the upgrade.
Although I will say this...the high praise and supposed skill set DO NOT line up with a comparison of Andre Roberson.

We can over- or understate this - what I like is the FO is accumulating talent and assets instead of throwing them away.

True. Knicks probably would have been looking for a Roby type in the draft. Dallas did their shameful tank, so the Knicks pivoted and signed him for next season. It was a really smart move if this guy was the best young and unsigned defensive SF on the market.

But I think its more like stashing a late 2nd rounder than anything. Roby has flashed some, but has been cut multiple times by bad teams. Its a smart use of resources at this point in the year - we will need depth at PF. This way we are locked into getting a look at him for the summer league, preseason etc., and we have an NBA seasoned depth piece on the ready.

I agree with this. The guy gives an option to trade Obi and not have to worry about filling the backup PF spot or being used in a trade for the image of cap filler. It affords flexibility.

I’ll even suggest a trade is already slotted and perhaps another team with no path to get Roby now gets him down the road. Not saying he is a big trade chip, but could be we are doing another team a favor? Could be we trade him for a 2nd round pick? Or part of a bigger trade? We all about being clever in our predications?

Couldn't it just be a good depth signing on an athletic young player?

For sure……………. I did say already he could be our back up if Obi is traded…………

Yeah, we have to many expensive toys. We are going to need to get some cap friendly players.
