Solid player, but I think I am letting him test the market as an RFA before I spend more. That RFA tag is important. Notably, I had Brunson at 4 years 80mm and understated our salary for him by 5-6mm per year. That said, he wasn't an RFA. I have a hard time seeing him over 18mm on the open market. Even if he gets to 25mm, you can just match it. Make the process work to determine the value.

He was the worst player in our rotation in the playoffs.

Shot 37% from 3 last season. Good not great. Was 34% from 3 the year before. He’s a good overall scorer but like you said stunk it up in the playoffs. It’s one thing to put up stats against the pistons reserve guys in January he was bad facing top competition playing full speed for two entire series. We can probably get multiple first round picks for him now.

Two series?

HofstraBBall @ 5/27/2023 12:00 PM
Sign them both!!

People worried bout couple of million?
We just paid EF and Rose $18 and $15 to sit.
Get them off the books and Hart and IQ are deals.
Hart made $13 and was our quintessential glue guy. Plus $5M seems fair to lock up a culture guy who makes everyone around him better. Guys commenting on shooting numbers were not watching second half of season and playoffs.
IQ has basically over achieved two out three years.
Top 5 rookie. 6th man. Looking at Maxey who is rumored to be in the market for max at $200M, IQ is a deal. Especially when I feel he is as good or better if he had Maxey's minute opportunity.
Knicks have a $25M All Star.
A $26m All Star to be in JB.
If RJ outplays his $24M, our core payroll is pretty darn good.
We just need some more pieces. Bench and shooting.
If a true number one comes along, try to keep most of our core. IQ and JHart included.

Him being putrid in the playoffs may have saved us some money.

Name me the playoff games IQ has played in which he was effective

x2! Just by releasing Rose we can sign Hart to up to 18.5 million without entering the luxury tax. If we release Roby and Jeffries for minimum salary rookies we can open a little more. The cap is set to increase by about 10 million the year afterwards making an IQ extension also workable. Knicks can start Hart big and go small and start IQ small and go big to open up a little more room for Hartenstein. If Knicks play well next season, dipping into the luxury tax to keep Hartenstein and Obi is also a possibility. Top teams usually pay the tax.

What I am getting out of these tweets is that Fred will only be polling 14 FO types next time around cause that last one is an embarrassment.

Leon is the one guy who believes it should be $12.5M. Negotiations have started.

jskinny35 @ 6/15/2023 7:16 PM
I'd be good with Hart at 16-18m as long as he fixes that ugly looking jumper
gradyandrew @ 6/15/2023 8:15 PM
It's tough because you really need a team to figure out how many teams will have cap space, which players are likely available, team needs, and even comparative taxes. You'd think all things being equal Josh would want to stay in New York but with his age this will likely be his best chance to earn legacy money for his family. I agree with Hofstra's take that Knicks spent a lot on?guys who didn't contribute last season so a slight overpay isn't bad.

What happened to all the beautiful cap flexibility you said we were going to have?

gradyandrew @ 6/15/2023 10:46 PM
I said not resigning them doesn't significantly increase our cap flexibility. I spent about an hour crunching the numbers for you but you chose to ghost that thread and our now making things up. I'm starting to get Nalod's treatment of your posts.
gradyandrew @ 6/16/2023 2:36 AM
Phil, is your argument that letting Hart walk this season, then letting Fournier's contract expire and clearing Hartenstein IQ Obi and McBride puts the Knicks in a better position? Knicks would have 6 guys rostered and about 30 million in space, depending on cap holds for incoming rookies. Do you think the likes of Siakim or Jaylen Brown are going to be available for 30 million when they can get 40 million per via a sign and trade? I just don't see it.

PhilC is Drunk Uncle. Fuzzy synapse with little impulse control. Wastes our time.
Can’t ignore because its not about agreement, its common courtesy. I don’t agree with a lot of posts but they are thought out and often have effort. It elevates the conversation.
Inaccurate posts are often digested as legit because most of us do make an effort to state facts or color them as opinion.
Thats my gripe. Its just respect to make an effort to others that do.

newyorknewyork @ 6/16/2023 4:26 PM
Odds are high both get resigned/extended as they should be. The main issue I see is the mins distribution for among 4 guys. Grimes and Hart can slide to SF sure. But that caps the teams ability to reach the next level.

Will probably take another playoff loss for the org to come to this conclusion though.

Actually I agree with Phil on some stuff. I don't want to overpay Hart and IQ but trust the front office in this regard. We both agree Bob Meyers gets overblown in the media. Just the inability to admit mistakes "worse contract in the league" "salary cap hell" shit pisses me off.

Nobody wants to over pay ever for anything. Not a bold statement.
Old saying:
"Price is only an issue in the absence of quality". How do you know? Hindsight.
Some thought it was nuts to pay Brunson over 100mil. Year later it was a bargain.
All teams make mistakes. Its the fatal ones that get you. Beal with that money and NTC got Tommy Shepard fired.
Not that his boss is without blame. he signed off on it.
