Knicks · D'Angelo Russell (page 1)

Lakers have about 26 million in non- guaranteed contracts to use as trade bait. It seems like resigning Reeves and Hachimura are the smart plays. D'Lo looks like this year's scapegoat for Pelinka. Will LA use their bird rights to resign DLo to a big deal (say 20 million per)? If LA doesn't, is there another team with cap room who will make him a big offer?

Knicks will probably have the full non tax payer mle to offer of 12 million which might be the best deal DLo can get. Randle and DLo seem to be close and the team seems to lack anyone else who's tight with Randle. Last season DLo shot 40% from 3. DLo was also successful in his previous run in Brooklyn. He would also give the Knicks an option if they were to trade IQ/ Grimes for a superstar.

This is more of a buy low move than anything else, hoping that DLo can be a better playoff performer than IQ. I still think this move would only make sense if the Knicks hoped to make another move to upgrade somewhere else, for example Fournier RJ and IQ for KAT.

Russell on paper is one thing. They guy is not liked on his teams and lacks performance under pressure.
Not sure what his future holds. If Kyrie to Lakers is a think perhaps he ends up in Dallas as part of a sign and trade?
Him and Christian wood together (not sure he still under contract) should get Luka to ask out! LOL……………
franco12 @ 5/30/2023 9:07 AM
I like D'Angelo.

But I think our greatest need is a big (center or PF) that can score when Randle is out or having an off night- and perhaps a really good 3pt shooter with decent defense.

BigDaddyG @ 5/30/2023 9:15 AM
D-Lo is a weird player to evaluate. His skills as a tough shoemaker and playmaker are useful, but his rep as a bad defender at both guard positions makes his fit questionable. I have a hard time picturing Brunson and Russell guarding opposing backcourts. Also, Russell offers no paint pressure. I think the team would be better off finding more wing help.
LivingLegend @ 5/30/2023 9:44 AM
Not the worst idea in the world - was thinking same thing myself in terms of potential buy low.

Less talented option though maybe a better overall fit in terms of Thibs and chemistry could be DiVicenzo.

In the event IQ is packaged for higher level talent — both D-Lo and Donte could be on radar.

Also agree with other posters on needing big/long defender on the roster.

Does the signing need to make sense first?

Brunson, Grimes, IQ, Hart, McBride.

NYKBocker @ 5/30/2023 10:54 AM
Not a fan. I would rather roll the dice with Grimes, IQ, RJ. Plus, Rokas is coming.
Chandler @ 5/30/2023 11:14 AM
never
blkexec @ 5/30/2023 4:33 PM
I rather have Austin Reaves. But you need a Linsanity poison pill to get him. LA is matching all offers.

I mentioned if IQ were moved for better player D-Lo might be an option.

Knicks are over the cap. How is DLo an option to sign?

DLo averaged near 20ppg as a starter for last 5 years while hitting near 40% from 3pt land this past offseason but there is a chance he may be willing to sign for the $12m MLE?

Is that what some think? I don’t like him as a player but that is insane

The teams with projected cap space are:
Houston 65
Orlando 59
San Antonio 43
Utah 40
Detroit 40
OKC 37
LAL 29
Charlotte 28
Indiana 27
Sac 21
Dallas 21
Cleveland 12

I haven't done a deep dive into team needs and cap holds. These numbers are just pulled from Spot race. The most likely outcome is DLo resigning with the Lakers. It makes sense from an asset management perspective even if they hope to move him later. After LA though, I'm not sure which of those teams would want to make DLo a big offer. Maybe Orlando?

Yep - that is debatable whether he would have to settle for the $12M MLE but lots of guys lose value.
My post was if his price does drop that far - he’s talented and he is pretty good player.

Malik Beasley is another guy and we were rumored to have a deal close for him/Vanderbilt at the deadline.

He’s up/down but our Minny front office guy has history with him and if his market falls significantly he could be a buy low chance for us using the lower exception or a trade.

Beasley quick catch/shoot release isn’t something we have on this team — if his price drops to the lower exception level could be a thought.

I think you are being incredibly - and debatably - generous with "debatable"

I don't like the fit much better than Grimes. I wanted DLO together with Randle that offseason. I thought that pairing would work then, but I liked DLO as a PG not a SG. I know he has the wingspan to cover the SG and that our existing guys aren't specifically large at SG, but to pair with Brunson, I like Grimes or a bigger version of Grimes (think Klay but not old). A lock down physical defender that spreads the floor. I don't think DLo does this.
