Knicks · Just bring back Achiuwa (7/30 update: he is back) (page 7)

franco12 @ 7/30/2024 8:04 PM
Love bringing him back - do not want to trade him. He just needs to work on his 3pt shot - which is there. He shot well his 2nd season from there.

With the number of switches - having Prescious as our center is fine. In fact, I might start him over Mitch to just give Mitch a different load to try and get him to last a full year.

I think Precious at the 5 holds up better with Randle at the 4. Precious struggled the most at the 5 with Hart at the 4 and the size limitations and spacing were too hard to overcome. He can play some traditional backup 4. Hope he is working on his corner 3.

I love Precious but only curious because I thought the intent was to sign him for the difference between what we have left under 2nd apron and the TPMLE (~$5M).

I think we had $13.5M available and MLE would be ~$5.0M so expected Precious to get $8.3M and that higher amount we could trade in season but we only gave him $6M.

Can we still use the MLE and the extra ~$2M?

We for sure can use the 5mm taxpayer MLE. I dont know this for sure, but it appears we have an extra 2 to 2.5mm below the 2nd apron which would give us wiggle room to sign a buyout player for a pro rate veteran minimum at the deadline - if it made sense for us.

LivingLegend @ 7/30/2024 8:32 PM
Ok great - thanks.

Will Sims conversion from 2-way deal (Per Marks eat into that extra $2-2.5M?

Couldn’t a 3rd team be added to make up any salary shortfall we lose with Precious sign.tade no longer available?

For ex. if we need another $8.5M for a deal to work - couldn’t we send draft compensation to 3rd team who provides a player to make #s fit? Or is this no longer doable in new CBA terms

Think he is a far more versatile and impactful defender vs Mitch.

Mitch changes shot - there is no arguing that but Precious is all over and defends at the 3 and the rim - can switch almost 1-5.

Keep working on the J Precious and on finishing stronger.

Yeah, there are like 3-4 centers that are too big for Precious but Huk got that

I think Precious/Randle up front is interesting and something we probably did not see much of during the regular season. Precious can take the tougher cover even if it's a face up 4 and let Randle either guard the stretch 5 or a non scoring 5. For example against Indy you place Precious on Siakam and let Randle hang around Turner. He's a nice defensive fit with Randle.

I was worried we were going to lose Precious but so glad to have him back! He was very Taj Gibson-like for us.

And at $6M he becomes a good trade asset too.

Wish we signed multi year deal.

Signing Precious is absolutely huge. Robinson has averaged 1300 minutes per season for his career, maxing at 1700. Even when healthy he only plays more than 30 minutes a quarter of the time. Math tells us there are 3900 minutes at center over the regular season. If Robinson plays 1300, there are 2600 Thibs has to figure out.

I don't think Precious gets all of those but choosing between Precious, Sims, and Huktopori I'd wager Precious gets the majority of those. For comparison, last season Precious played 1600, iHart 1900, and Josh and Brunson 2600.

Potentially Precious could play a lot more. Thibs has had a little of chances to play Randle at the 5 but has almost always opted to play Randle with a big. I'm not sure if Thibs would go with OG or Hart as the nominal center in small lineups.

And it's possible Mitchell plays less than 1300.In two seasons he only appeared in 31 and less than 900 minutes. Knicks centers have generally out perfomed their contracts since Thibs took over (Noel, Taj 1.0, IHart, Achiuwa, and Robinson (when healthy)) .So Precious has the opportunity to earn a big payday next summer if he build on last season.

Before this signing there was a possibility of a Mitchell Robinson training camp injury pushing Sims into the spotlight and derailing the season.

GustavBahler @ 7/31/2024 1:02 PM
Great news. Glad to hear that Thibs has a backup for Randle that he trusts.
Nalod @ 7/31/2024 1:20 PM
Precious got a really nice payday from us.
Nobody was going that high to give him a muliti year.
He had an nice run for us defensively stepping up as a back up but he has been limited and we took care of him.
Im not as enthusiastic as some of the faithful here. Nothing bad with him signing and perhaps he is trade fodder.
All good. He get that offensive game ramped up a bit he'll get paid next year.

I think to even put Precious in the same sentence as Rodman either inflates Prec or really not appreciating all that is Rodman.
Rodman had an incredible motor, seemingly endless ability to sustain physical high output. Precious? at times he looked out of shape.
Im not talking physique, im talking about getting gassed and then committing dumb fouls, turnovers, or can't hit a shot. Compared to Josh hart, he looked out of shape.
Rodman was incredible, HOF, and dominate stretches of game with defense and/or getting out on break!

Dude was jacked. He got muscles that ain’t even in the anatomy books.

What sort of fool would even try to take away his rebound? Not me.

VDesai @ 7/31/2024 5:20 PM
Naz Reid should be the model for Precious. If he can be a threat from the corner he would be very valuable as a versatile bench 4/5

I’d never thought of it but I actually like the “poor man’s” Rodman comparison BUT maybe more so to The younger Rodman.

Rodman was 26 as a rookie and he didn’t avg. 10 boards until his 5th year in the league at the ripe old age of he was 31 in 1991.

I think the play style is somewhat comparable and Precious has a knack for rebounding and quick put backs ala Rodman.

Sure after 1991 - from age 30-40 Rodman was an absolute animal and HOF player.

Will Precious ever approach HOF Rodman almost certainly no but the size, length, movement, defense are in the ball park similar and again the compare was a poor man’s Rodman.
