Knicks · Shamet versus Grimes (page 1)

I recall how excited I was about Quentin Grimes. Man felt he was Allen Houston with Latrell Sprewells defense all rolled into one. The shine of his halo sort of vanished very quickly and now he seems to have become a regular journeyman. For the purposes of our team do you think Landry Shamet offers the same production that Grimes would have given the team if he was still here ? I don't recall Shamet playing against us, is he any good ?

The three points percentage would be about the same, but Shamet shoots them with more frequency.I don't think Shamet will ever defend like Grimes. Doubt he'll even be able to defend like Donte.

He’s a shooter. He will make open shots and be more consistent than Grimes was. The defense isn’t there though. He’s definitely an okay rotation player though. Won’t hurt us. Grimes was always a guy who needed to put it all together consistently. And injuries are impacting him now. He wasn’t healthy in Detroit and was surprisingly a throw-in to the Dallas trade. He’s in a good spot there to make his money because in Detroit he was headed towards afterthought.

Grimes had skills. Problem was he was one dimensional on offense. And soft.
Shamet is more like Donte. IMO.
Much more active without the ball.
Unlike Grimes uses the pump fake from three to get to other levels.
He has a quick release and decent mechanics with his jump shot.
Pretty good variety of finishes at the basket.
Think fans will like his high energy.
With that all said, he has been in the league for a minute and still just a journeyman trying to make a roster.

We didn't include Grimes in a deal for Donovan Mitchell. Wonder how the team would be now if we had made that deal. Wonder if the team would deal for Grimes in the future as a free agent or in a trade.

I was hyped about Grimes and heard how great his defense was... but after watching I would say his defense was solid/decent but nothing exceptional IMO. I recall many times his limited size hurt him when guarding longer/taller players. I don't really recall him shutting anyone down or doing anything more than playing solid defense. I think Shamet will fill a similar role here and wouldn't be surprised is he offered similar stats and inconsistency.

Didn’t really follow DDV for the early part of his career but it look him 4 years before he found some consistency with health and shot in GS and then another half year with Knicks to really shine.

Sometimes opportunities just gotta be right.

Based on Thibs latest comments sounds like Shamet will play the 3 off the bench with Payne/Deuce at the PG/SG and Precious/Sims up front.

Shamet came out of college as a PG (in my view) so I've never seen him as a 3 but sounds like that is the plan short-term at least.

I don't mind Payne/Duece/Shamet/Precious combo but would be nice to squeeze maybe an OG/Mikal/Hart in there instead of Sims.

Thibs said a few days ago that the bench would be playing with one of the starters.

I undersand Grimes is gone but lets not change history. He was an amazing defender for us. He took the hardest match and was often left by himself because Randle, Brunson and RJ are not good defenders. Grimes issue was consistancy and actually earning the 3 part of being a 3 and D player. Once teams learned he would over look for the pass on his drives he became even less effective.

Wow that Shamet debut. Preseason game, sure but he played super duper well. He seems to be capable of giving us productive 12-15 minutes. As well as Grimes could have. I'm not down on Grimes, but if Shamet can provide that level of production our bench will be a positive. Deuce, Shamet, Precious are solid with Sims and Cam in the chamber.
Clean @ 10/8/2024 5:39 AM
Grimes still missing the 3 in 3 and D.

Nalod @ 10/8/2024 8:32 AM
Shamet came to camp ready to earn his place!! He found a good role/team to get minutes if he can keep that level of play up.

Mav's have to keep up a knick quota?
Not sleeping on Detroit this year. They are marked for an improvement.

its wild the progression of this roster. We had some hopes of Grimes being a SG of the future. He doesnt make this rotation

Disagree with you on that one. This team could use a player like Grimes off the bench. I'd say it's more of a weakness than center at this point.

SupremeCommander @ 10/9/2024 4:46 PM
I love the Shamet signing. I feel he’s going to own that 2013 Baron Davis role
VDesai @ 10/9/2024 5:25 PM
Yeah I would take Grimes all day long in this rotation over Shamet. Grimes can body up wings and Shamet cant and its not clear me that Shamet is much better on offense. That said I'm happy having a guy like Shamet available who we got for a minimum deal. He has scored 8-11 ppg consistently as a rotation player and often on good teams. He is a real NBA player and shooter. His lack of size probably the biggest issue.
CleaverGreene @ 10/9/2024 5:51 PM
Thought(wanted)we might take McBride in the slot we took Grimes, and at some point believed Grimes was the right choice. Now I'm back to thinking Deuce is simply the better of the two.

I always talk about confidence & consistency, and Grimes never developed it on the Knicks. Deuce took a large step last year, and hopefully, he takes another one this year.

Shamet may have the confidence Grimes lacks. It doesn't matter if Grimes, at his best, is better than Shamet at his best...If Shamet can play hard with consistency, he is probably a better fit on the team we know have.

This doesn't mean that at some point, Grimes might not be a better version of Danny Green on a playoff quality team, but he clearly hasn't taken that next step in his development.

VDesai @ 10/10/2024 9:30 AM
Real question to me is Shamet vs. Warren. Both are on these camp deals and one gets a contract. I think everyone is penciling Shamet but Warren is a real wing with size. If you want to play Kolek AND Payne (and I think there's a case for both) - then I think having Warren instead of Shamet makes sense. I know Warren's health is an issue, but at 6'8 220 with scoring chops, there's actually a bigger role to play for him a 3/4 off the bench where we are thin
