Knicks · Do we really want to see Towns moved to PF? (page 2)

Towns and our wing stop forwards, even JB, Deuce and Hart (for example). These guys are positionless players. And that’s the future of basketball. Some may argue it’s now the current structure of today’s basketball game. Yesterday PGs are today’s SGs (for example). iHart or Towns were centers yesterday, today they are point forwards or point centers making back door passes. Town really does everything.
So Towns was brought in to cause mis-matches and to add flexibility to an already flexible roster where we now have ALL 5 positions, especially on the starting lineup, can play multiple positions. Randle and Mitch for example play 1 position. Them two together reduced our flexibility. Towns and others on the roster can play 2-4 positions.
Perfect roster build to match up with any NBA team. Against the cavs, Mitch and Towns might be a better strategy against them. Other teams like Boston, we need towns at the 5 for example. So Thibs has a lot of flexibility on hand. Will be interesting to see how he utilizes this flexibility.
yeah... its bigger wing and smaller wing. The league has like 3 positions. PG, C and wing. You are one of those 3. You can play 2 PGs. You can play 2 Cs. But that's really it.
KAT is not a wing. Every time he's gotta guard one anywhere but the paint we are losing that matchup. Dude should NOT be burning calories out there. Look at him vs. Bam. You really need more evidence?

Randle and KAT have very different games. Can you elaborate how it would work?

I am not a fan of Towns as a 4. If you watch how deep he is in drop at center. You would have 2 bigs falling into deep drop and giving up open shots everywhere.

Looking at the Poll I don't even think OG is playing PF. He guards the bigger player because he is stronger but he is playing the SF role. Hart is playing the PF role.

I think the term PG and Center is old. It’s just guards and forwards. Wings is the new term for forwards. Power Forwards are now TEs in football.
Kat is a big with multiple skills playing multiple positions. Kat at the 4 will be needed at some point. But not as a starting unit. I think this 5 is permanent. But during the game, Thibs will experiment with Mitch and Towns together.

There may be situations where he plays the 4 next to Mitch IF we keep Mitch. However its more likely you see Precious out there playing quasi 4-5 next to Towns and you wouldn't notice the size gap we currently have. I think Precious is a 18-20mpg player on this team.
+1

For those don't understand why you want KAT at the 5, watch this video and understand how the pick and pop potential completely neutralized BAM's drop coverage

We need a backup PF/C that can rebound, we need a PF in a SG/SF's body that can rebound to come off the bench, Josh Harts role has to basically become Dennis Rodman's
I think we need to add some gritty sand paper to the tool box, not necessarily get new tools

I think when the roster is healthy we have that. Brunson/Bridges/Hart/OG/KAT and McBride/Precious/Mitch feels like the 8 man playoff rotation Thibs will want to run. Only missing piece is a real backup PG but I am not sure Kolek is ready and I hate Payne

Counterpoint: Towns is just bad matchup for Bam. Towns at the 4 still creates mismatches if Mitch is in the game. Who's going guard him? Jaime or Jovic? Probably Bam. Plus you have Mitch to harass Bam on the other end. Of course, the real answer is that it depends on the matchup

Towns at the 4 on D is a mismatch for a lot of teams. We don't have the defensive player of the year to cover for him guarding faster players.

Mitch is still very good and did it for RJ and Randle for a good number years. Again, it depends on the matchup. Karl is averaging half a block a game to date. I've heard all sorts of excuses for why his blocks are trending down, but it doesn't matter at this point. It's become a thing.

Don’t really agree with the logic on swapping Robinson in at Center. It’s a different look, for sure, but you already have an advantage against about 94% of the league with KAT at the 5. Why give that up?
I’m a huge Mitch fan and can see them sharing the floor to create mismatches, but I don’t think that’s in your starting lineup where you are trying to get floor spacing for Brunson.

I mean, the advantage doesn't real change much at the 4 tho? KAT is a walking mismatch. What the would do is bring in a lineup with the four best players in it, shore up the defensive interior and send Josh back to the bench, which to be honest, needs him. Now should they start off with a Mitch/KAT frontcourt? How long should they go with? Those are questions I don't have the answer to and we'll never know until Mitch comes back.
Nalod@ 11/1/2024 7:42 PM
You play with what you got. If Mitch is still here, you try things vs. some teams. if we go against Cleveland in playoffs you might counter with a bigger line up. KAT is best big shooting the 3. they have to deal with that.
martin@ 11/1/2024 7:44 PM
Lebron is going to be 40 in a few weeks and will make $50+m next year and he should still opt out and play for Knicks 😅😉
He’d be so perfect in the starting lineup
Philc1@ 11/1/2024 8:58 PM
He can play both positions and both work. That’s why trading for him was an absolute no-brainer

Maybe Deuce can mentor Bronny the way he has iHuk.
DLeethal@ 11/2/2024 7:44 AM
Absolutely not and I highly doubt the coach or FO wants to either.
He might play next to Precious some and that’s about it.
