Knicks · The Curious Case of Kevin McCullar jr (page 1)

I see him sitting on the bench in street clothes every game. The Knicks haven't given any updates on his health but you have to think that he is in our future plans.

Knicks rookie Kevin McCullar Jr. will miss the Summer League in Las Vegas this year.
According to SNY's Ian Begley, the Knicks' No. 56 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft will stay in New York to continue his rehab on an injury he suffered while at Kansas.

McCullar Jr. missed six of the final 12 games of the regular season, including the Big 12 tournament, while managing a bone bruise on his knee. He also missed the Jayhawk's entire NCAA tournament run.
The 23-year-old was initially on the Knicks' 2024 Summer League roster alongside fellow rookies Pacome Dadiet, Tyler Kolek and Ariel Hukporti.

New York will begin Summer League play on Saturday, July 13 against the Charlotte Hornets and wrap up July 19.
McCullar Jr. played in 26 games for the Jayhawks during the 2023-24 season and averaged a career-high in points (18.3) and assists (4.1), while also grabbing 6.0 rebounds per game. He shot 45 percent shooting from the field.

It was a gamble. If he pans out, great. If not, bring in an UDFA or low second round pick next year. I doubt they didn't know the severity of his knee before drafting him.

I think I read he re hurt his knee twice after missing end of his season but don't hold me to it.

Hurt himself at beginning of SL and then before training camp. Maybe setbacks while rehabbing.

He will be a while.

Definitely a gamble. They traded late to get him w/ the 56th pick. They didn't sign him until August.
They had to have known he wasn't going to be ready for a while. He's a stash pick. Could be a rotation player down the road, or nothing. Not a big investment.

It is strange that there literally are no reports on his status.

There haven’t been any surgeries that we know of so the long recovery from a bone bruise and no updates from the team are just odd. That he is on the bench and traveling with the team is also odd to me. There has been no updates on his condition or his timeline. I’m not saying it’s anything but I am curious. We could use another defensive minded guard on the depth chart. Hopefully he is in the gym putting up 1000 3’s a day

Nalod @ 11/17/2024 2:54 PM
Maybe one of our telepathic fans can seep into Thibs head and tell us. I'd imagine he and some others know what's up.
Rookie, your right, the level of transparency on this situation is quite different!

Maybe, but let's be honest. Would you trust any updates given by the team anyway seeing how theyve handled past injuries? Instead of feeding us BS, they've decided to say nothing.

Teams are obligated to tell regular health updates of the athletes when they injured? Was that signed off on by the players union?

This a new one for me?

They do, but the reporting seems kinda nebulous. "Unknown," "day to day," "probable."

https://official.nba.com/nba-injury-repo...

NBA teams must report information concerning player injuries, illnesses and rest for all NBA games. By 5 p.m. local time on the day before a game (other than the second day of a back-to-back), teams must designate a participation status and identify a specific injury, illness or potential instance of a healthy player resting for any player whose participation in the game may be affected by such injury, illness or rest. For the second game of a back-to-back, teams must report the above information by 1 p.m. local time on the day of the game.0the%20game.

This has been extremely strange. I was on the McCullar train for a lot of the year as he seemed to be the perfect Grimes replacement - a wing who does a lot of things well and plays like a Vet. Was thrilled to get him so late, even with the injury issue. We just have no idea what's going on here. I think he absolutely could be a contributor at some point - if healthy he was probably the most NBA ready of our draft group, which is saying a lot. I guess it won't be this year, but who knows?

I think sometimes with injuries even the player and team don't even know?

Knixkik @ 11/18/2024 2:38 PM
I heard the knee wasn’t great but also we never got any word about a surgery or anything. I wonder about it because it definitely is a curious situation. And he was a legit first round prospect and viewed as an NBA ready contributor prior to the injury issues.

This article is misleading. He provides zero clarity. The original author Edwards is just guessing at this point. No one is asking questions to the Knicks about McCullar or offering anything other than vague, wide ranging guess.

What more are you expecting? I’m honesty curious what level of injury reporting folks are expecting?

Like weekly updates on activity level?

Dude is injured 🤷‍♂️

On the bench in street clothes tonight! Progeess!

He’s been on the bench for home games all season, I think. Seen him a bit, but can’t confirm every game.

No I’m speaking more of general knowledge of what the injury actually is and how the rehab is going. The insiders know as much as us. Which is not surprising since the OG, bridges and KAT deals all came out of nowhere. Honestly the Knicks beat never recovered from Marc Berman leaving. He would put out a lot of trade speculation without merit, but he always had some details on stuff like this.

CleaverGreene @ 11/19/2024 5:48 PM
Not even any kind of hint that he's doing anything in practice?

Aren't reporters able to see some parts of a team's practice?

If healthy, he did appear to be NBA ready.

I'll be honest...I haven't thought of him at all since SL, until I saw this thread.

Strange, and a bit annoying, but it is what it is.
