Knicks · What is Nyet Sqaured? Knicks at Brooklyn - 7PM MSG/Yes (page 10)

Take a look at the last 2 seasons and what Brunson does in Oct/Nov/Dec vs. what he does in January onward. Jalen's game comes from smarts, work, adjustments. He gets stronger as the year goes on. Teams are putting big wings on him and trapping. He is slowly working out of those traps and making more plays. Some shots he normally makes are rimming out. His 3 ball isn't quite there yet. It will come.
VDesai @ 11/18/2024 12:10 PM
You guys also forget that Jalen broke his hand in our final game. He had surgery and a limited offseason (was on the shelf for 8 weeks).

Yeah and he probably got the icky finger from changing diapers too.

Absolutely, it will take some time to adjust to this new scheme. I thought they were able to combat in the last 2 games by having either Hart or KAT flash at the key and spray or drive from there. Bridges had a bunch of open mid range shots due to this. This will actually affect Jalen's numbers negatively because he is not scoring and not getting an assist.

fishmike @ 11/18/2024 2:18 PM
Its really fun watching KAT and learning his game and seeing how good he is.

Brunson just a slow starter

Loving the bump on his assists. I hope he keeps racking up more.

Brunson being subpar at 6-5 is actually a really good thing. Brunson getting back to normal is about as sure a thing as we can bank on as Knicks fans. It’s not like banking on a quantum leap from a young player or needing someone to up their game in areas they never have. We KNOW Brunson will get better and that hopefully gets us back to our 50+ win standards

We all love a good rack! Very good suggestion!

Brunson 2.0 will probably arrive fully patched by next season 🙃

- Kat (so talented & smart) - only things that hold him back are some bad decisions and sometimes a few questionable shot decisions (but SO GOOD)
- Mikal looked better - more comfortable, OG another SO GOOD
- Hart making key plays but both he and Jalen have been sleeping on D
- Pacome playing solid/tough D
- Payne scares me but he’s got nerve/balls to play here NOT AFRAID
- Sims did some good stuff but still a step slow and zero offense —— best asset is perimeter switch ability for a big guy

Didn't watch last night's game and still finishing Friday's, so I'll start there.

Does it look like to everyone that Brunson looking to adjust his play-making side of things to the [small] detriment of his shot making?

I think this is a good thing, he is still missing too much but well within his learning curve of sorts?

Another poster put this out the other day and I forgot who: Someone like Kolek knows how to pass where the shooter is going, Brunson still needs a target most of the time and passes direct to where a player is at so far (it was in reference to a Huk play). I thought that was good way to put it.

For, it looks like a big part of his problem is that he is not in great shape. His strength is a big part of his game. Right now he looks more like Duhon than last years Brunson. He also looks slower and doesn’t have the same quick first step and burst. The good news is all that is fixable and he is slowly playing himself into form. Also I keep wondering if it’s any coincidence Garland is having a breakout year and Brunson is struggling. I don’t know why Jonny Bryant left but he is probably missed. I keep wondering if Rick Brunson just had a bad relationship with Bryant because he left in a lateral move. It had to be something because he was looking like the heir apparent to Thibs

And boom there it is. The league is investigating Rick Brunson’s promotion into Jonny Bryant’s position as lead assistant. So now we know. Bryant was forced out by Rick who got Bryant’s job and a raise.

With assistants, you don't need to force anyone out to give them a raise. You just give them a raise and then no one cares besides Adam Silver who wants to give it to Dolan some for his NBA league revenue complaints.

Bryant was waiting around for Thibs to keel over and Thibs got an extension, so better pastures? Plus, he close with Donovan.

Occam's Razor my dude, don't even need to hunt around for a conspiracy theory that fits.

martin @ 11/19/2024 11:04 AM
Having said that, there is no doubt that Brunson Dad was part of the Brunson son "extension", kudos for leveraging that negotiation.

Brock Aller for the win again.

I don't think you want to argue Bryants resume vs Rick Brunson's. The lifestyle in Cleveland vs NYC. Im not searching for anything, it's right there in the NY Post. Is it also not a coincidence Brunson was named Captain?

Rick gets lead assistant and a raise despite never being a lead assistant before
Jalen gets named captain and signs for less than max
Bryant gets rewarded for his loyalty with a plane ticket
Was Bryant close with Rick or did Rick see his as an obstacle because Bryant is the better coach just ask Divo

Ask yourself this. Does Rick Brunson get named lead assistant on any other of the 29 NBA teams?

This is true for all first time lead assistants. So, every one of them. And every one of us when we get a new job.

NY Post is looking for clicks. They won.

I don't know, do you think Brunson is not worthy of being the Captain for this team?

martin @ 11/19/2024 12:31 PM
Rookie, Brunson had a lot of leverage during his extension negotiations. This is how he used it. Does it border on some sort of reverse nepotism? It sure does.

After that? This is how the real world works.

The Knicks didn't even need to do any of it without Bryant going. He could have stayed and all of these thing still would or could have happened.

I think this is nothing burger. If you look at Rick's past relationship with Thibs and his past as a player/coach, I don't think it's out of the question that Rick gets elevated to lead assistant. I'll post the Wikipedia entries for both. As we saw with Randle/Donte trades, Leon isn't here to make friends. As for the reason Bryant left? Who knows?

From January to April 2007, Brunson worked as an assistant coach with the Denver Nuggets, focusing on player development. From 2007 to 2009, he was with the University of Virginia as the Cavaliers' director of basketball operations. In May 2009, Brunson was hired as assistant coach for the Hartford Hawks men's basketball team.[5] On September 8, 2010, Brunson was hired as an assistant coach for the Chicago Bulls.[6]

During the 2012–13 season, Brunson served as an assistant coach to Mike Dunlap on the Charlotte Bobcats' staff.[7]

On September 25, 2016, Brunson was hired by the Minnesota Timberwolves as an assistant coach. In May 2018, Brunson resigned amidst allegations made against him regarding misconduct toward two women, while strongly denying the accusations.[9]

Brunson coached at Camden High School in Camden, New Jersey.[10] He was Dajuan Wagner Jr.'s head coach. Brunson resigned prior to the 2020–21 season while Camden High was ranked the #7 team in the country,[11] but changed his mind a couple days later and remained the coach until 2022.[12]

On June 2, 2022, Brunson was hired by the New York Knicks as an assistant coach.[13

Bryant started coaching at the Bryant Sports Academy, a skill development program through which he worked with athletes of all ages, including former Utah Jazz forward Paul Millsap and Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard.[4]
