Knicks · The NBA vs Knicks (page 1)

KEEPCAMBYNY @ 11/19/2024 7:03 PM
So far this season most of us have been disappointed in the lack of calls that we have seen in the games this year. It seems like Brunson is getting less whistles than last year. Well that is not just in our heads:

At first glance it seems interesting that teams with attacking guards like Lamelo, Brunson, and SGA are not getting the benefit of the whistle, but is there more to it than that? Well check this out:

There was some speculation that some around league were upset that Brunson took the paycut instead of taking the max in the summer. Not only that, but Dolan and the league have been beefing since this summer as well:

Let’s also not forget MSG going into default and Dolan blaming the league for it:

And let’s not forget the Toronto lawsuit:

Not only that, but I’m hearing that the league hasn’t been too happy with the way Leon Rose and Brock Aller have been utilizing loopholes to circumvent certain aspects of the CBA either this summer (i.e. the Towns deal). Not that the league has ever helped us outside of 1985, but don’t expect them to give us any favor at all this year. What do you guys think about all of this?

BigDaddyG @ 11/19/2024 7:08 PM
Honestly. I think that Dolan really needs to nail down a good PR team. Even when he makes good points, they become weighed down by his pettiness and vitriol.

This is what I think as well. It does feel like the Knicks are getting punished a bit. But with OKC right next to us, might just be small sample sets.

Knixkik @ 11/19/2024 7:43 PM
Knicks are finally running competently at the front office and coaching level, and those guys don’t deserve issues from the nba that should be geared specifically towards Dolan. If they have issue with Dolan, they should use all avenues to strong arm him to sell. But the team itself is functioning successfully and that is a good thing for the nba itself. Knicks getting good exposure means more viewers.
Nalod @ 11/20/2024 9:30 AM
Lets not get to carried away by connecting the dots or the red string. the Twitter responded by fans can work one into a lather of conspiracy.

Then you got the op "Not only that, but I’m hearing that the league hasn’t been too happy with the way Leon Rose and Brock Aller have been utilizing loopholes to circumvent certain aspects of the CBA either this summer (i.e. the Towns deal). KeepCamby, what are you hearing that your not getting from the internet? That statement implies your an insider? You got contacts? Interviews? Know people?

The league is investigating that Rick Brunson is among the highest paid assistants in the league and perhaps that in favor for Jalen taking a favorable deal. Im going to assume its not that Silver hates the knicks, but the other owners see this as an unfair advantage? So before I go on and think the league has it in for the knicks, I might ask "What don't I know"? Reason is the league benefits from Knicks doing well. We fill up arenas and do well on National TV when relevant. So why would the league penalize the team?
As for Dolan, he was a very powerful owner and sat on very important committees but has not been getting his way as the CBA creates parity and thus not being in the biggest market does not offer him the advantages it used to. By not agreeing, and its his right he does not sit on the committees as he used. Petulant dude not getting his way so he leaves? Maybe?

I have not read that the league is unhappy with knicks but it stands on logic other teams might see what knicks are doing as not adhering to the spirit of the agreement. To that I say "Fuck em! and if need be close the loopholes or use them if they are legal".

The Toronto thing? I understand Toronto ownership is tight with Silver but did Dolan step over the line by taking it to court? Was this Dolan being petty or a legit beef? How bad were we damaged? All we know is Knicks went nuts by what happened and assume guilt as they are team. Again, was this Dolan being a dick? Im asking questions to things I have not read outcomes or details other than the accusations filed by knicks that was public. It was damning for sure. But it was one party and we never got Toronto's detailed defense on how they responded in court. Did we go after Toronto or the assistant coach himself? If the coach, thats one thing. If its an organizational effort and they conspired thats another.

Sure I want the knicks to have all benefits of playing in a big market an making money but is Dolan a constant pest to Silver and in turn causing silver to react to the hyper annoying Dolan?

Reading the Twitter responses one sees all kinds of fanboy responses in favor of knicks and conspiracy. Does this bleed over too on court calls by refs in retribution? I know we cannot fathom how we used to get more calls and now we don't but how can this be? Playing style changed? Personal changed? The Rules have changed? Does Rick Brunson salary really get the League to call games different?
so basically we have the late David stern and now Adam Silver, dudes that grew up in NY and state life long fans but "hate the knicks" as per fans? Yet we see thru the years Dolan's behavior and perhaps we give him the benefit of doubt because we are fans of knocks?

Maybe im naive?

Philc1 @ 11/20/2024 2:10 PM
This goes back decades. David Stern disliked the Dolans. Silver is just an extension of Stern.
Nalod @ 11/21/2024 9:43 AM
One has to admit, we hired Rick as Jalen became a free agent. He been here just two seasons. He was coaching high school. Two years later he is associate head coach.
Who on knicks might have been next in line? Erman? Greer? Daisuke Yoshimoto? On paper perhaps, but they don't have a star guard son!

Lets not forget Silver works for the owners. Knicks got dinged when we signed Brunson. If owners put up a stink, Stern/Silver does.

To be fair, Jalen can make up a good chunk of the "100mm" later. What if he got injured this year?

my guess is other owners in the league are crying that Knicks are not playing fair. They might have a point. Perhaps with more sons of players coming up this could happen more frequently?

The parity system worked! The CBA got Jalen paid and created a new star to market. It also helped OKC get iHart a very nice deal and OKC played by the rules.
Its a tough business.

Is Dolan being penalized for being in the biggest market? I do agree with the petulant little shit that he gets to make all that money but can't waste it like he used to.
Fact is TV revenue has changed with the move from cable to some extent. Knicks are worth a ton of money and would be top dog if they owned the land under MSG.

Knicks Cheating? Maybe a bit.
The NBA has a history of weird shit. Stern Veto's the CP3 Deal to Lakers. Remember league owned the Hornets and was getting it ready to be sold. The Michael Jordan "retirement" was weird. Better than calling it a "Suspension".
If we don't understand something then its must be a "conspiracy".
If League hates knicks why? Seems silly to just state it without cause. Its good business for the league to knicks succeed.
They fill up arenas all over. Even last night you can hear the crowd early when Brunson was lighting it up. Should we consider league is letting us off easy at times?

Are knicks better with Rick Brunson as assistant then his son comes to play here? Of course.

Rick Brunson in two years goes from coaching HS to associate Head coach. Tippy top Assistants like Kevin Young of Suns last year made 2mil11 Scott Brooks, a lot of NBA head experience makes 1.5mil per. What is Rick Brunson making? Is it me or don't most associate head coaching sit next to the head coach? (damn, Fizzdale looks old btw!)
Seems Greer sits with Thibs? Erman? Rick seems off left? Visual clue? LOL.

Could be retribution? Knicks made the Toronto thing very public. That was last year. That he called out very publicly revenue distribution and left a committee? So perhaps an investigation like they doing now is not out of line and perhaps league does all kinds of investigations every year about players, owners, and coaches. But they keep it quiet?
Maybe League is trying to make Dolan understand keeping it in house is good for all?

Not saying he is not qualified to be an assistant. Have to admit the timing on things is suspicious or coincidental. Conspiracy?
Not really because we know why. Makes knicks better.
Is it fair? Bit different than bringing on Royal Ivy (Durant) , Johnny Bryant (Donovan Mitchel) and Thanasis.

After Minny, Rick did not come with Thibs right away did he? No, he did a month before Jalen was to be a free agent.
Thibs was Hired the summer of 2020. So for two years rather than join the knicks, he was coaching high school.
We got dinged for tampering. Water under the bridge.
Two years later Brunson signs a very very team friendly deal. One that Nalod thinks is logical for many reasons.
But perhaps tell me all the details surrounding Bryant's move to Clev other than being with his buddy Donovan. Did his contract run out? We not resign him?
WE let him out of his deal early? its unusual for coaches to move laterally especially at associate head coach job. Its unusual for teams to let them walk. If promoted, they are allowed to. ITs how we got Johnny in the first place.

Does the league do such investigations all the time but keep it in house? Why do it now? they had months to do it?

League might not like Dolan but he has not done anything egregious to force a sale. He is far from Donald Sterling territory. Dolan might be preparing to sell knicks? you know, do the petulant child thing like act up making it easier emotionally to leave? Children do this shit.

It's suspicious that when an assistant leaves, you promote a different one into that spot?

Was it suspicious when Joe Mazzulla got promoted into the head coaching position after there was a vacancy?

It's suspicious if Rick Brunson is being paid more than what an associate assistant is given and that's the one thing no one has yet to bring up.

No one has said that Rick Brunson is being wildly overpaid as an outlet and alternative to giving Jalen money, they are just saying he is Jalen's dad and he got promoted so far?

martin @ 11/21/2024 11:35 AM
Is it suspicious that Bronny James got a fully guaranteed contract? Yep.

Did they get fined or whatnot? Nope. What gives?

This is just par for the course in the real world. It's called having connections and using them.

Like, being an alum at a college and suddenly yo kid gets in with not very good grades.

Is it suspicious that athletes get into a college without the requisite grades and whatnot? Sure, but we are used to that.

Your asking questions which is good.
Im not debating you. Im asking questions before coming to a conclusions.
What was the deal with Bryant Leaving? lets assume its all perfectly innocent and he had career aspirations and needed that Pop-Kerr-Atkinson tree for experience.
And lets say its coincidental that Jalen qualifies for an extension.
Based on who is on that bench, and I don't have the answer might have been more qualified-received great reviews- to take his place if not Rick? Did Rick get paid based on merit or some comparisoin to others with that salary? He paid like scotty Brooks at 1.5mil? Or Kevin Young at 2mil? If he was over paid, was the others given raises based on merit or perhaps to keep peace in the organization?

Why am I asking? Cuz league is investigating the Knicks!!!! Not Nalod.
What is Rick being paid? Is it consistent and can it be defended?

We know Bronny got what he got. No secret. His contract counts toward some aggregate. He was the 55th pick. Silly perhaps, but it sells tickets and they are making Lebron happy. Is the league investigating the contract? Why did you bring it up then? Apples and oranges.
Alonzo trier was undrafted. Knicks paid him close to 7million over two years. Bronny got 8 over 4. 2mil a year. They want to try to develop him.
Lakers sell tickets and sponserships and try to win. Not like Bronny is inhibiting this.
If they paid him Trier money would it raise questions? No, its defendable If they paid him 10mil a year, and Lebron took a discount perhaps your in the right ball park that they are circumventing the salary cap rules.

Lets get back to the point.
Knicks got dinged for tampering with Brunson. Fact. I described he was out of the NBA, gets bought in from High School after 4 years out of the NBA ONE MONTH BEFORE HE SIGNED WITH KNICKS. Is it a big deal, not in my book. Obviously Mavs thought it sucked and league agreed. They did investigate and found something. Maybe proof?

Im sorry, did anyone profit from Mazzulla getting hired? If so, did the league investigate them?

Is Rick doing the duties of the associate head coach? Is there some accountability to it that is not being done?
He hanging at the end of bench coaching as he always does but Greer or Erman are doing the normal job of associate head coach?
So what is it that the league might be looking into all this time after the extension that got them in a tiz? Some deviation of a protocol perhaps?
Adam Silver don't like one of the franchises that pays him really well? Because he is mean person? No, there was precedence of tampering already.
Someone ratted them out. (I guess the room looks at Erman? LOL!)

In my book Im thrilled the Brunsons are here regardless of the circumstances. But the league rarely investigates things without cause. They might not find anything substantial to act on, but it was made public. Why?

Division I college athletes academic criteria for admission is put in a different category than for other applicants. Hence, an applicant normally needs a 1400+ SAT score and a 4.0 gpa to get in Columbia but the star catcher on my high school baseball team who barely could break a 1000 on SATs also got into Columbia.

No doubt nba teams pay players under the table to circumvent the salary cap and the commissioner looks the other way if it’s with a team that is considered a league tv ratings draw. There’s no way the bulls weren’t paying Jordan under the table probably funneling money into an offshore account probably in the Caymans to a ghost LLC and that was probably part of the conflict Jordan had with Krause. The krafts did this with Tom Brady for 20 years

Ofcourse when Dolan tried to do something similar to this with lebron in 2010 by offering him part ownership interest in MSG suddenly Stern stepped in and it became a problem

Has that been established or you get that from a deleted reddit post about lebron? BTW, no player could ever receive any ownership stake while an active player. Its an NBA rule. It is written. As for MSG, they refused Riley's request given the nature of it being a publicly traded stock. He could have bought shares but there might be some insider rules to its ownership and restrictions had he done so.
While payment under the table is a logical work around, nobody has ever been accused of it in the NBA, MLB , or NFL. I think WNBA Aces have been investigated.
As for off shore accounts, you don't read about it anymore because international banking rules bought transparency to accounts. The advantages of hiding money pretty much ended in 2008.
