Knicks · What to do with Mitch? (page 1)

martin @ 12/30/2024 6:23 PM
For me, there won’t be too much of a market for Mitch over the next 6 weeks til Feb trade deadline. He hasn’t started full contact and it’ll be months after that before he is even up to speed. Giant risk for any team wanting a big defensive center coming off of his injuries.

If he can prove himself after coming back and through playoffs, it’s be a different trade market during summer.

I got it in my head that if if if Mitch can stay healthy through summer and prove he is kinda sorta back or better, he and Deuce will be bundled for a targeted player in the way IQ and RJ were. Just my thought.

fishmike @ 12/30/2024 6:30 PM
for its simple math.. this is not a make or break year and he's not toxic. His best value is get to him healthy enough to play and just move on when he expires.

WE have had Mitch 6 years. Last year and 20-21 were rough. 30ish games is really bad. But the other 4 years were 60 games and if we could get anything close to that there isnt much out there close in terms of impact.

To me its even more about developing his replacement

Nalod @ 12/30/2024 7:00 PM
His play will dictate his value.
At least we can have him for two playoff runs. This year and next. IF he proves durable and effective he earns a payday perhaps out of our range.
But.....he gave us great value and earned it. Fans will cry, but perhaps his going away party is in the canyons of heroes!
My gut says next year is our best window. My gut is growing.

Your gut is growing ? I exercise every Knicks game. Tonight at half time I will begin 3 sets of deadlifts, sumo squats, standard squats, and glute bridges. Then do some dead bugs for my core. every Knicks game take 30-45 minutes to join the Knicks in motion

They need depth now, not consolidation. They have maybe the best top 5

The risk is if Mitch gets hurt again….it would not matter if he was playing at a Bill Russell level you are not moving that contract unless with a sweetener or a longer term contract with a player 40% of a healthy Mitch

Kind of wish I knew the Apron rules a bit better. For example, aggregating again next year forces us to play with that wonky 2nd hard apron where I am hopeful to fill in the bench in the next free agency cycle. For example, if we don’t aggregate, can we sign as many vet mins as we want? Does the lil tax payer MLE cap us? Some of this speaks to making whatever move this season.

There aren’t a lot of guys out there that make me want to
Package Mitch and Deuce. In a Herb Jones deal, I am all ears. I know you love Deni… not opposed but also don’t really see it yet.

Mitch has Cleveland’s number, at least for the last two post seasons. Barring a clear upgrade, I’d love to let MitchBeast rip boards off these guys and bestmode into living in their heads rent free.

Keep him

We need Mitch’s defense and rim protection in the playoffs. We can get by with KAT at C and decent bench players like Achiuwa and Sims but in the playoffs we need Coke Classic.

ToddTT @ 12/30/2024 8:44 PM
Mitch is made out of styrofoam.
ToddTT @ 12/30/2024 9:04 PM
Precious just hit a three. Trade Mitch.

Knicks depth is marinating in the GLeague and such. I’d guess that Huk will be good enough along with a vet min contract big. Kolek may be ready by next year as well. I’d guess Dadiet won’t be ready next year but who knows.

I’m also trying to consider both the Vegas draft and the second apron limitations if you need to resign and extend Bridges, Deuce, Mitch in 2-3 years.

This summer Knicks will have more options to load up after extending their best top 7 (with 1 consolation) with small contract guys.

HofstraBBall @ 12/31/2024 8:00 AM
Mitch adds a tool to Thibs utility knife.
Which we need now that our bench typically gets outplayed.
However, Mitch”s health concern is valid. Especially for the rest of this year.
We need a scoring backup 4 imo.
Backup 5 seems okay with Precious doing a nice job.
There is rumor of Mitch practicing his three though.

Wait, is this another one of Martin”s secret trade for Randle thread?

franco12 @ 12/31/2024 8:03 AM
I keep McBride and Robinson - i don't think you can get their production/impact at their salaries.
Rookie @ 12/31/2024 8:15 AM
Rehab him. Play him. Deal with balancing the roster in the offseason
DLeethal @ 12/31/2024 9:05 AM
I personally don't think they have any intention of keeping Mitch. I think they extended his rehab to not risk injury so they can trade him at full health near the deadline. He and Precious can't play together, he and Towns shouldn't play together, and Precious is simply a better fit because he can play backup C and also play some PF next to KAT. Mitch is our only contract left to trade, and they will use it to bolster the bench and balance it out OR upgrade it.

If Precious and/or Sims get traded, then I think we would work Mitch back into the lineup. Until then, I don't think they have any plans to reincorporate Mitch.

VDesai @ 12/31/2024 12:45 PM
ON a declining contract, its hard to get better value than what he might be able to provide us- but right now Precious is getting only about 20 mins a game backing up the 5 and playing next to KAT on occasion.

To me the biggest need on the team is a depth wing with fair enough size so we can get OG/Hart/Mikal minutes on the right side of 36.

Yea, and Jericho and Hukporti are both serviceable as injury filler 3rd/4th guys. Precious is too good to not be an everynight player. It makes way too much sense to trade for a guy who can play 3/4 wing then it does to try and incorporate both Precious and Mitch.

Hart/Mikal can play 40 minutes a night. OG and KAT can play 40 in a night, but those guys really need more rest. They strike me as much better if they are under 3xxx. To me best scenario is about 15 minutes of Precious/Towns and 15 minutes of OG/Mitch and you open close with the starters.

I was in the trade Mitch camp. But I wouldn’t mind seeing how Mitch does, holds up, off the bench for a couple of seasons. The FO has tried to move him for a while now. Mitch broke a Wilt Chamberlain record. But his lack of availability has tanked his value.

I hope the FO gives Mitch an extended look at Center off the bench. Maybe he stays healthy. Healthy for a deep playoff run could alter the course of a series. All those 2nd chance scoring opportunities. Maybe the minutes won’t be so top heavy, if more bench players are chipping in. Mitch can deliver the scoring opportunities.
