Knicks · Brogdon retiring (page 2)

EwingsGlass @ 10/15/2025 7:31 PM
1) Knicks announce earlier this week that all former players will be granted access for the Knicks training facilities.

2) Brogdon looks a little behind on his conditioning but absolutely still an NBA caliber player at 32 years old.

3) Brogdon retires from the NBA.

What are the betting odds that Brogdon continues to workout at the training facility and sometime around January 15 or so he gets re-signed at a prorated vet minimum?

Noted. TBD later in season

Could be 100% wrong here but this has the feel of Knicks told Malcolm he wasn't making the cut and gave him the option of retiring on his terms rather than a camp cut.

Also means with 100% certainty that Malik Beasley will sign for vet min.

I don’t know, it’s a little concerning that after getting here he just wasn’t really into us. Maybe the lack of structure at this point in his career was a turn off.
Nalod @ 10/15/2025 11:04 PM
I put it out yesterday he might show up injured but threre is not an "Injured Reserve" thing so him returning could be a thing, but if not a very classy move, a respect to the game and the instituation that provided a springboard for him to move on to other things. He owed the knicks nothing and its not just considerate to the team, his agent, and family, but to a player whose career might be changed by this. Who that is remains to be seen and if that opportunity can be executed.
It was pretty telling he did not look like an NBA player anymore this preseason. Few guys know when its time. This dude doing it with dignity.
SkyWalker @ 10/16/2025 1:13 AM
Is Mathews really solid? Why hasn't he been able to stick around yet with any team in the NBA? Is his defense that bad?

Look between Clarkson, Deuce and Kolek don't we have enough?

Otherwise call Delon. Payne already in Indy

I think they were planning on using Deuce as trade bait next February. Obviously now that strategy has to change.

Philc1 @ 10/16/2025 8:56 AM
Kinda screws us since Westbrook was also available and just signed for almost exactly the same money.
SergioNYK @ 10/16/2025 9:21 AM
That's too bad but good luck to him. I haven't watched a minute of the preseason but from what I've read and heard, Brogdon was kind of washed anyway.

Guess it'll be Deuce, Clarkson and Hart sharing the backup PG duties off the bench unless Kolek surprises.

they could have done this without Brogs announcing his retirement. I doubt he'd lower himself to that, taking a prorated min and faking his retirement for what exactly?

The nuance is as a free agent, he would be prohibited from working with the Knicks under union rules and as a retired alumni (and not a free agent) those rules don't apply. Yeah, if you are making it seem dastardly to classify as retired while he determines his future it comes across worse, but players retire/unretire regularly. See Jordan, Michael. I acknowledge this is total conspiracy theory but it kind of connects dots on what seems like an otherwise surprising series of events.

Can we just waive/jettison Matthews to the Gleague if he agrees? If he finds another gig, so be it. If not, we keep him playing until its sorted out.
Lot of other players just got waived and will be tomorrow so perhaps a wait and see.
Brogdon was the primary back up to Jalen. That either falls on Deuce or Kolek? In the era of positionless ball does it really matter? Its about chemistry and matchups. Clarkson is not a PG but a playmaker.
That Kolek had a career game vs. Wiz 2nd unit does not solidify the promotion for me but if coach thinks he earned a shot thats good enough for me.
Garrison Matthews is not the make or break player for a chip. Very nice shooter. Shamet can play some point and if stay healthy shoot 40% from deep perhaps.
A trade for a back up? Could be something cooking. Ben Simmons still lurking? LOL......

Westbrick as primary back up point? A career .305% from the 3.
While the energy with Josh would be fascinating any thoughts to the subject of shooting to even the most casual/lazy fan can see that as a problem.

Just play Brunson 48 minutes a game
JesseDark @ 10/16/2025 2:48 PM
I see Spencer Dinwidie is getting cut, he would be a got backup pt guard.

LOL that's right he was an early innovator to getting paid all in bit coin. I do like his size in the backcourt though.

I'd take him as another option for handling the ball and he's a guy who has on occasion stepped up in some big moments/games.

Seems the kind of guy you hate playing against but might shine in Knick uniform.

Keyword: backup

Clearly the nuggets did ok with him as a backup last season.

nycericanguy @ 10/17/2025 9:17 AM
I'm fine signing Delon Wright to a pro rated min later in the season if anything. He showed he can work on this team as a 3 & D steady ballhandler.
