Picked up ESPN's NBA 2k5 yesterday, and started the Association with the Knicks. Made 3 trades in the 1st "week" - brought in Spree, Camby, and Brand.....and I'm still 0-3. I think the problem is the gameplay. It's hard to get used to certain things, especially on offense. Just too many things to remember - how to execute an alley-oop, how to follow the playbook, how to set picks without using the playbook, and the whole Iso-motion thing.
Any suggestions or whatever would be good. And if you have the game and started an Association, what team did you choose (I'm guessin the Knicks), and what kinda deals, etc. did you make?
Btw, here's a breakdown of the players I traded and brought in (can't remember each seperate deal per say):
Outgoing:
Marbury, Vin Baker, Crawford, Nazr, Sweetney, Kurt Thomas, 1st & 2nd Rounders
Incoming:
Brand, Spree, Hudson, Camby, F. Elson, M. Moore, 1st & 2nd Rounders

Try out the franchise simulating mode and see if it still sucks or did they actually make it better.
How are the rooks rated btw? And in general are player ratings fare or does it need tinkering around, same for game sliders?
They need tinkering around just a bit IMO. But I haven't even gotten into the game all that much yet. Haven't tried the online gameplay. Did some pratice games in Rucker park, and found it was insanely difficult at first.
What's weird is that certain players that have no business putting up numbers do. KVH is like the league leaders in points through 3 games. What's up with that? And even though my roster is pretty much stacked, it's still hard to close out games. Running set plays is really hard.
Sweets is rated 72. Good rebounder in the game (before I traded his fat ass). Believe it or not, I don't think Ariza's in the game. Kinda surprising. I guess they finished making the game before last year's draft.
i have it...im playing as the knicks on simulation and superstar im currently 4-1lol

well...i made some trades i got Q and traded houston to toronto for jalen rose and alvin williams..my line up in da game is
PG-Marbury
SG-Crawford
SF-Richardson
PF-Sweetney
C-James
its relatively easy..its a simulation game so defense wins games...on defense highlight the guy thats defending the ball handler or whoever has da ball on the other team..basically man to man coverage..
on offense theres alot u can do..if u have the PS2 version press square and x together to make a pass to the cutting player..this usually results in a layup for u..when u shoot the ball from the outside...pumpfake once, as soon as u get the defender in the air..shoot.
also dont take too many 3's...its hard to consecutively hit alot of 3's unless ur open..its hard than as well
I haven't played for awhile. I used to do the Knicks a lot in Association and I would rebuild with them or as I did one time, I just traded for Garnett and teamed him up with Marbury again. The last time I did Association, my team was the Bulls and the starting lineup was PG- Ben Gordon, SG- Vince Carter- SF- AK-47 PF- Okafor C- Curry
I stopped playing though because it got too easy even under the hardest mode. What I used to do was just take over teams, make trades, and just simulate a number of seasons to see how many championships I could win in around 6 or 7 seasons. That was probably more fun even though trading isn't realistic.
BTW, shotblockers are very good to have when you are playing in the game itself.

Ya I noticed Houston doesn't really hit that many 3's. He hits them, but not as much as I'd like.
Not to be a punk, but that lineup sucks dude. I got the 2000 Knicks with a twist going down for me:
Hudson
Houston
Spree
Brand
Camby
Brand is nasty in the game, but Camby......wow. He's a beast. Gets like 4 consecutive off. boards or runs towards the basket and puts it DOWN after a missed shot.
problem for me is remembering all the combinations like alley-oop, lead pass (like you were saying), and others. first day playing it so hopefully i'll get used to it but we'll see. one thing i hate is that you can't manually box out, computer does it automatically. That's one glaring thing that's missing in the game IMO.
Also, with the way I set the Association, I'm not sure really how to go about drafting (or if there even is a draft), how to hold practices whenever I want, and why I'm practically the only team that's making trades.

LOL Yeah, I have more fun being the GM on those games than anything else...rebuilding teams is an addictive habit!
I was dissapointed in the GM features of 2K5 as opposed to 2K3. (never owned 2K4) The interface isn't as clear, in 2k3 you could cleary see the length of contract you were trading/recieving, on 2K5 that info's on a different screen. You can't use the MLE as you could in 2K3, and there are several other annoying features i.e you can't hire coaches or even scout draft picks if your team is over the cap. This should be fixed in new version. Still, even with the flaws it's far better than NBA Live's GM features.

Yeah I remember the interface wasn't very efficient or user friendly--the team chemistry crap needs to go to, that was just obnoxious.
Ya, it's stupid as hell that you can't see the length or $$ of a player's contract when you're making a trade. Luckily I know most players' contracts pretty well, but still...its just plain stupid.
the whole training thing is retarded. and then there's something about respectability right? that sounds dumb as hell.
There are def. some things they can work on but for 20 bucks its worth it...
Oh my bad I thoght you got the new 2k game I should have realized it could not have come out yet.
Yeah I played a lot of the current game no Xbox, and the gameplay is a lot nicer then Live.
Def leadpass all the time, you'll get turnovers, but lead passes are the only ones that go where you want them. Push the ball, and so a lot of crosover with Marbury and Craw. Just cross and hop step and you will get free for layups.
I was extremely disapointed in the Association mode. The whole team chemsitry thing has to be the dumbest thing ever. Its the same set of questions every time for the 3 personalites, and it has nothing to do with baketball.
Practices don't really make any sene either. How are players gettin hurt doing free throw shooting? There are way too many injuries in general.
Its also not realstic at all in how the results of games are simulated. You can have a stacked team and it will still loose if you are on a high difficluty level in the GM mode.
Trades are odd too. They do trades that don't make any sense, and refuse ones that should go though. Draft is an incredible crapshoot, maybe I just did nto do enogh scouting.
The cap system is a joke, what does caohing and everythign else has to do with it. It never even tells you clearly what money you have for what.
The MLE and the LLE is a mystery. Somteism you get, sometimes you don't.
All in all I really hope they redo the Associatoin mode completley or I'm going to have to just go back to Live Franchise.
2K6 is coming out in early October of this year.
Looks good so far. Go to google and type it in, should find some preview vids. Hopefully they improve the association.
When I play, my lineup is:
Marbury
Tim Thomas
Jamal Crawford
Amare Stoudemire
JYD

Haven't played with Pheonix yet. Is Amare nasty in the game? And what'd you have to give up to get him?
Btw, Nash is so underrated in that game.
I do the trade and trade them to NY. Yes, Amare is pretty sick. And Tim Thomas is very ahtletic in the game.

Now in English please...
Ha, sorry I was watching TV and typing at the same time. I traded the players to NY...those who weren't on the team. On the bench is Vince Carter, Patrick Ewing, Camby, and a few others.

Use Stephon Marbury. Learn the spin move and the jump stop/hop step. He's hard to stop on the drive. Learn to lead pass...thats the key to getting easy baskets. Only take jumpers when ridiculously wide open, and maybe play the 24/7 mode to work on your mechanic.
On D I like to double the ballhandler and use either a 2-3 zone or a halfcourt trap. Craw is excellent at the backup PG, so feel free to be agressive with Marbury.
^ lol. Sorry man, but I traded Marbury and Vin Baker for Troy Hudson, Spree, and a Fut. 1st...

I keep hearing about the lead pass though. I'll def. try it. It's X and Square at the same time right?
LongIsland -- How the hell do you have Ewing on your team. And I'm still confused - are you the Knicks or Suns? and exactly who was involved in the trade for Amare???
