bernie not getting to balls as he got older was a bigger problem then his throwing which was never any good but we still won. johnny tracks down balls

When have the Yankees won when Bernie was "old"? The last time the Yankees won the World Series was 5 years ago when Bernie was 32 years old and had argubaly his best season in his career both hitting and fielding, he didnt make one error all year long. In the years the Yankees won Bernie always had good range and tracked down a ton of balls and his arm was decent, better than Damons, for that matter.

thats what im saying they won whe bernie was able to get to every ball.

this move sucks. Damon might be the worst CF in baseball and YS has a HUGE center field. My 5 year old daughter can throw a baseball further than he can. If you thought Bernie had a bad arm than you will really love Damon. Great... we have a 32 year old leadoff hitter and a collosal liability in CF.

That fact that he's a dirty redsux just makes it ever more super.
For 5 years the Yanks have been ousted in the playoffs by teams with superior pitching and defense... the same thing they WON their titles with. So its good to see that have learned and went out and got themselves a better... hitter. jerks

Im afraid Roger goes back to boston. That will seal his going to the hall as a red sox. We could use him here!

And how does this relate to Damon when he's a below average CFer who has a weaker arm and less range the Bernie ever did?

Come on! He isn't as bad as you describe it. Right now the arm issue is a wash because both didn't have a strong arm but, hey, they still had one to throw the ball! Now, Damon is faster than Bernie and can cover more ground than him, therefore shallow flyballs wont become bloop singles, singles won't become doubles, etc. They di with last season't version of Bernie. So we have indeed upgraded the defense of CF compared to last year, and at the same time we finally have a leadoff guy!

Can't wait to see this team play!

Don't worry about the Red Sox thing...don't forget we bagged Wade Boggs and Roger Clemens, who were the ULTIMATE Red Sox, prior to the championship Sox.

A needed pickup I think, that will solidify the defense and the top of the order (not that it was exactly weak).

Disagree about the defense, his arm is extremely weak. I still think they should have used Crosby in CF until May to see who became available via trade. Crosby was good defensively and although his bat is weak, the Yankees could have definately lived with Crosby batting 8th or 9th for awhile, they certainly don't need more offense.

Damon has a terrible arm - but he can go get it. He's a much stronger center fielder then Crosby or the recent past Bernie. I was so-so on signing him because I'm worried about how he'll hold up - but if we get the Damon of the last few years he's a big upgrade defensively (and obviously offensively) The Yankees haven't had a center fielder with an arm in years anyway.

You guys are bumming on his arm? Geez man NY fans are something else, lol.

I'll agree his arm is weak but that never seemed to matter in the wars he had against the Yanks while he was in Boston. He's not old yet and he is young enough and healthy enough to hold it down till it's time to replace him.

Damn man just enjoy it. Bubba Crosby is still around and Bernie was offered arbitration.

Tis good to be a Yankee fan.

Going back on his word???

This is what Johnny Damon said on MLB.com on 5/01/05

"I want to stay here, but I may walk and go home. I might shut it down in a couple of years.
"There's no way I can go play for the Yankees, but I know they are going to come after me hard. It's definitely not the most important thing to go out there for the top dollar, which the Yankees are going to offer me. It's not what I need.

"I'd like to finish my career here [Boston]. I'm not sure they'll let me do it, if they offer me [only] two or three years [on a contract]. I want at least four or five.

Damon is a real good player but I see no reason to get excited about this. To me, I am very nervous about our pitching. Small and Chacun were real good, but are they just 1 season wonders? Is Wang going to be a good Yankee?

Jeter is a year older, as is A Rod and it's exactly how I said things were a few years ago. We needed to completely rebuild this pitching staff and make it younger and more talented. Now, it's built around 2 pitchers who are 40 (Well, Moose is close to it!) and you don't know about anyone else. Now it seems like this whole team needs to be rebuilt.
