THE Crocodile Man, Steve Irwin, is dead.

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said.

It appeared that he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest, Queensland Police Inspector Russell Rhodes said.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that's when it occurred.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

Mr Irwin was killed just after 11am, Eastern Australian time.

It is understood he was killed instantly.

A source said Mr Irwin was already dead when his body was brought onto the Isle.

A source said Mr Irwin's body was being airlifted to Cairns Hospital in North Queensland for formal identification.

An Emergency Services Response Management spokeswoman said they received a call about the tragedy at 11.11 am, Australian Eastern Standard Time.

The response unit left in a helicopter for the Batt Reef at 11.18am and arrived shortly after.

Mr Irwin was pronounced dead at the scene immediately, the spokeswoman said.

R.I.P.
No crikey jokes in order.

Steve Irwin R.I.P.

Sad but not surprising that he met his end from an animal. I wonder if he was attempting to touch or handle it, you know how he did with the crocodiles...

That is crazy. Dude risked his life all the time. Then dies in a freak accident. God rest his soul.
Allanfan20 @ 9/4/2006 4:41 AM
You gotto be a little crazy to get into the things he did, and really, there are people who have to do it. It's a darn shame but as nuts as I thought he was, I had so much respect for him and this is sad for me.

R.I.P. Mr. Irwin.

I had a lot of respect for him as a conservationist

man that guy was a real cult hero in my house. we always repeated our favorite line of his whenever we prepared to torture one another - "watch, they really hate it when you do this!"
BRIGGS @ 9/4/2006 10:02 AM
terrible. didn't some other guy just get mauled by a bear not to long ago-who kind of did the same thing? this guy was a real unique character, but i'd bet if he had to go that early in life, he went out the way he may have wanted to.

Tim Treadwell...there is a movie about him - Grizzly Man which is a documentary and is made from his own tapes. I think that was a little different though - Steve did't live with the animals but both guys were conservationists who had a love for different species. It's sad to see him go.

The report I just watched said he swam right on top of a Sting Ray. The sting ray jabs it stinger directly upward when it is frightened and the stinger is about 10 inches long. That means he had to be right on top of it and less than ten inches away, so he was basically hugging it.

I thought he was an exhibitionist and while I like him, I thought he pushed things a bit far.

Its sad, but worse because he asked for it and was stupid.

in my house we used to also go off on him. Like: "Look at that croc, she a beaut! Im gonna try to mate with her!" Or: lets french kiss that great white!"

The dude was over the top. Freaky way to go, but he pushed the odds all the time.

Ive been to Cairns and did some diving in the great barrier a few years back. Great place by the way!

Was at my beach place this weekend and was wearing my Port Douglas hat!

I used to watch his show all the time. I thought he was crazy, but I enjoyed the show. It is sad, but with the things this guy was doing, it had to happen eventually. At least he lived a full life and died doing what he enjoyed. Not many people can say that.

I don't think that's right. The stinger is at the end of a long tail. The ray can whip that up. I think it means he was within 2-3 feet of the stingray. The water was reportedly only about 5-6 feet deep. Rays usually travel near the bottom. It was also tiger shark season, when the rays on edge from predators. Irwin probably looked alot like a tiger shark moving in for a kill.

You mess with nature and animals will defend themselves.
Don't know if Irwin was qualified or knew what he was doing in the sea. But the guy was a risk-taker. Sure it's unlucky he was killed, but from what I've read, you don't really want a stingray stabbing you with poison anywhere, as it hurts like hell.

It's very sad. I will definitely miss the guy. His ESPN commercial with the Florida gator was hilarious. It's sad to say but somehting like this was almost bound to happen sooner or later.
