aaron gave a message on the scoreboard.

LBeast @ 8/8/2007 1:34 AM
Classy move by Hank Aaron. You know he's not happy.
LBeast @ 8/8/2007 3:53 AM

Here's to ya Barry! Shake them haters off. I dont care that you used steroids. Those old muthafuckas cheated too. Its not your fault science is better now.

If that assclown Selig wants to put an asterisk next to your record, might I suggest one be placed next to all of Babe Ruth's numbers:

* - played against whites only
Travla @ 8/8/2007 4:09 AM
Congrats Barry.....I ain't mad at ya!!
Marv @ 8/8/2007 8:40 AM
baseball decided to become professional wrestling. mark mcgwire and sammy sosa were classic supersized heros, playing to the crowd and soaking it in. barry bonds was a classic villain, sneering and dissing.

it sold.

What's over?

showing giants games on tv. that team is terrible.

The babe was a fat bastard. He drank and smoked.

When he died he looked like a old woman. He was still fairly young. His body shut down on him.

Tell me this guy wasn't on steroids! He had all the symptoms. Back in his time they had the crazy unstable steroids. That stuff was killing people. Today the effects aren't as drastic.

And yeah, the Negro league pitchers would have dominated him, lol.
Nalod @ 8/8/2007 9:59 AM

Babe was a lovable character and he ran funny!

The he set was so far beyond it lasted for decades!

Babe's legend of partying and bad eating habits were his undoing, but knocking on Babe is way off.

Babe was a great pitcher as well, so his legacy is really quite amazing.

His home run record is tarnished as it was during the segregated days so perhaps he might not have hit as much. And its possible Negro league players would have eclipsed him.

I think Hank and Willie really are considered the best players of all time and nothing Barry does really tarnishes Babes, Hanks, or Willies accomplishments. Maybe younger fans don't really appreciate them and want Barry to be the man as its in their generation.

The record is just a number. Barry's legacy will be forever tarnished but he is still perhaps the greatest ever.

THe Babe dominated the game drinking, smoking and eating too many hot dogs! That ain't easy.
Marv @ 8/8/2007 10:01 AM
babe "big game" ruth
fishmike @ 8/8/2007 10:31 AM
check your history and you will see the Babe dominated negro league pitchers as well.

Big Mac was the ultimate scumbag as far as I am concerned. Hugging the Maris family at night and juicing during the day. Playing the crowds and all that crap. What a douchebag

Bond is a jerk and deserves what he gets

Hammerin Hank was not only one of the best ball players to walk on a field, but also one of the best men.

Sorry Hank... but everyone knows who the man STILL is
misterearl @ 8/8/2007 10:53 AM
babe was Black. Born in the ghetto of Baltimore and shunned by his parents who dissed him into an orphans home. Look at that huge African nose. Babe's affection for the less fortunate kids was only an attempt to make up for the love he never received.

The drinking and the women. C'mon, Babe was the original mack Daddy big baller.

you could look it up
misterearl @ 8/8/2007 10:54 AM
just wait until the Babe's DNA test results are released

all hell will break loose
tomverve @ 8/8/2007 11:20 AM
Didn't they use a different ball in Babe's day? It wasn't as tight and didn't have as much pop off the bat. If he played with today's ball he would have hit even more. Then again, maybe pitching and scouting back then aren't what they are today. Maybe if Babe played today that would work against his HR record.

Bottom line is that you can't really compare across eras, especially when the basic parameters of the game (kind of ball, dimensions of ballparks) differ. Steroid use muddies the comparison across eras, but it's just one more factor on the pile. You couldn't compare these records on even ground in the first place, steroids or not. That doesn't justify the steroid use but it does make talk of "asterisks" silly in my mind. Every number has an asterisk next to it, it's the years over which the records were set and all that changed between those years and previous and subsequent years.
misterearl @ 8/8/2007 11:25 AM
tomverve - babe with an aluminum bat would have certainly been interesting. Just make certain the pitchers mound had a Kevlar protective wall. Then again, Josh Gibson with a bat, period, would have been fun for a lot of folks. We will never know.

I just wanna know how many of the pitchers in the 80's and 90's were on the juice

the world is a ghetto - War

In a quick look into BASEBALL: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY (Ward/Burns) p 150:

"...He seemed destined to become a shirtmaker like the other boys, who ridiculed his broad features and called him "Niggerlips".

This quote doesn't do anything to prove the claim, but there is a lot that he was alienated from his parents (an undesirable background), incorrigible and angry, brought up mostly in a reform school. So, there is a lot of evident of rejection and alienation.

The Red Sox had a history of avoiding black players, up to just a few years ago. These rumors abounded, from Ruth's reform school days. The Red Sox fans still haven't forgiven the Red Sox for trading Ruth. Is part of the reason a suspicion that he might have had a drop of black blood?

Why is everyone bringing up Babe Ruth?

The record was Aarons. A black man who didn't take steroids. Instead of bashing Babe who had no choice against playing blacks, we should bash the men who chose to cheat the game and the men who allowed it to happen.

Congrats to Barry Bonds for 756 but Wilson Chandler is still the better athlete.
