Source: Girardi expected to accept Yankees' offer

The Yankees officially offered their managerial job to Joe Girardi on Monday morning and he is expected to accept it, a source has told 1050 ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told Don Mattingly and Tony Pena that they will not be getting the job.
Girardi was in Denver for the World Series. A source said he is expected to fly to New York for the announcement, which is likely to come Tuesday. Girardi's contract is expected to be in the three-year, $6 million range.
Mattingly will not accept a position on the Yankees coaching staff, Marchand and ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney are reporting.
Girardi, a former Yankees player and coach, was voted NL Manager of the Year in 2006 after keeping Florida in contention until late in the season.
Girardi, working as a broadcaster Sunday night for Fox Sports from the World Series in Denver, said he had nothing to announce regarding his status as a manager.
"Still former," Girardi said. "Nothing extra tonight."
Girardi was the first to interview Monday, followed by Mattingly on Tuesday and Pena on Wednesday. Pena won AL Manager of the Year in 2003 after the Kansas City Royals (83-79) posted their first winning season since 1994 -- Hank Steinbrenner told The Times that Pena was "definitely under consideration."
Mattingly has no managerial experience. He spent three seasons as New York's hitting coach before he became Joe Torre's bench coach last year. A six-time All-Star, Mattingly is among the most beloved players in Yankees history.
Torre declined a one-year offer to return at a reduced salary after leading the team to four World Series championships and 12 playoff appearances in as many seasons
Nice!!! I think this is a great move for the Yankees. Sentimentally, I'm sorry to see Joe Torre go, but overall, I think Joe Girardi is a great fit in NY and someone who will really get the team motivated to achieve their maximum potential.
It's a great move. Girardi is one of the brightest managing prospects out there. 78 wins with a 15 mil payroll and what people called one of the worst opening day rosters of all time. The only reason he lost that job is b/c he spoke up when the owner was sitting in the first row heckling umpires.
This is a good situation for him. He was always great with pitchers and there's a lot of young pitching here. He also relates well to the other guys in the clubhouse. I think he'll do a great job for a long time.
i would let posada walk now. bring in a catcher that will help our young pitchers develop - and posada is not the right guy for it. even last season, our young guys looked better with molina behind the plate.
Yyyyyyeessssssss. Great signing. I'll still miss Torre like hell, but at least we got someone for not expensive and he knows the game as much as everyone and he's not a starphuck.
I think it's a good move. I think Girardi is a good baseball mind and will be a good fit with the veterans that he played with and the kids. I see Girardi as being a Mike Scioscia type. A former catcher who played in the NL and likes to be aggressive instead of waiting back for the 3 run HR the way some old school managers like Torre were. Torre's championship teams were always at their best when they took the game to their opponents. Somewhere they lost that. I hope Girardi can get that back.
I think the fact that there are veterans here will be good for Girardi and will help him become a better manager in the long run. All those problems he supposedly had in Florida were because he had such a young club with little veteran leadership. Girardi had to fill that void. Here he won't have to.
I love Donnie but I don't think he was ready for this. It's going to be sad to see him leave, if that's what he decides.

girardi overused his young staff's arms his one year in florida, which led to them having infalted ERA's the following season and in some cases, injuries. we need to keep an eye on that as the season goes along.
i'll say it again...DO NOT re-sign posada. it will not work out.

That's a tough decision. Posada is still a top 5 offensive catcher but he had problems with the young pitchers last year. Especially Hughes. But I think Joba can pitch to anyone, Kennedy can too for the most part. Hughes needs someone like Molina to help him through the games until he starts to figure it out better and stops overthinking. I'd love it if they re-signed Molina. Making Dave Eiland the pitching coach would help greatly with the young guys as well.
i think it's similar to the stanley/girardi switch in 96. we need to do the same thing here.

It'll be hard sell b/c if you lose ARod and Posada, you're losing the 2 most productive players from the offense. And no one out there that you can put at catcher (barring some sort of trade) will replicate 25% of Jorge's
average production. Actually Jorge is the perfect bridge, b/c the young, high ceiling catchers in our system are about 3 years away and that'll probably be the length of time Jorge is behind the plate.
I think by hiring a pitching coach like Dave Eiland (who is responsible for a lot of the young players development in the first place) and having a guy like Girardi there you already have a solid enough support system for Hughes, Joba, Kennedy etc.

I think that was unfair saying he overused those pitchers, which led to injuries. Josh Johnson and Anibel Sanchez, the pitchers who missed the most time this season with arm injuries, didn't pitch that many innings. Dontrelle Willis pitched more innings the year before Girardi and had always been a workhorse for them.
But regardless, if that was a problem with Girardi, then at least now both he and the Yankees are aware of it and will make sure it doesn't happen with the Yankees. At least he didn't fuck up our pitchers. The fact that there are all these rules in place for the kids, leads me to believe they are very aware of how they need to be used in order to maximize their potential.

It could also be the Girardi/Posada tandem that they used from 98-00.
I hate losing mattingly, I really loved that guy, one of my favorite players of all time. But joe giradi is a winner and was the catcher during the start of the yankee dynasty in 96, he is a gritty guy, tough, I like the move..
i like the choice too, but does anyone think the Yankees did Donnie wrong by not giving him the job? afterall, they told him when he took the job that he was being groomed to be Torre's successor, & now he won't be back in any capacity for the Yankees because he's obviously hurt by being snubbed for the position.
in the past few years, we've had some big Yankee icons leave the organization, whether through their own volition or not:
Bernie, Torre, Donnie, likely Gator now too w/Girardi coming in to manage & select his staff... if Jorge, Mariano & Andy leave, that will officially mark the end of a fantastic era.

Its not just unfair its also wrong- he didn't throw any of those guys over 180 innings except Dontrelle (who already established himself at that mark).
Giraradi would be a good fit for the knicks!
Donnie is a great guy but just unknown quantity as a Manager.
We might see Torre, Donnie Baseball and others in Dodger Blue this year.

seeing Donnie wearing any other uniform but yankee pinstripes will be like watching an episode of the Twilight Zone.
I lived in South Florida and followed the Marlins saga. Girardi had problems with Larry Beinfest, the GM. Early on in the season, Beinfest wanted Joe to pitch the young guys, but Joe wanted a more veteran rotation and more veterans in the lineup. Beinfest stood firm on the youngsters until Joe realized he wasn't going too get any veteran help. Once Joe showed faith in the younger players, (almost halfwat through that season) is when the team took off and started to win. If Joe had his way in the beginning of the season, that team never would have won as many games as they did. The fight with the owner was the final straw. And it was the owner who hired him. Not Beinfest.
