Cookdcokehop @ 7/21/2008 2:46 PM
Now Dustin Keller is the top tight end in NY!

Good riddance... my only regret is the Giants didn't pull the trigger on this deal before the draft. Instead, the team will have to improve from his departure next season.

I'm excited for the Kevin Boss era. That guy has some talent and is more fluid in his route running. That 45 yard completion in the Super Bowl really highlights his mastery of the subtle techniques that yield large gains. Shockey is a better overall offensive player though... but I'm not a big fan of the prima donnas. Addition via subtraction

According to Fox news they tried to make a 3 team trade.

Taylor to the Giants
2nd & 5th to the Dolphins
Shockey to the Saints

I don't know why but it fell through so Taylor goes to the Skins, Shockey goes to the Saints.

WOW.
VDesai @ 7/21/2008 3:12 PM
Probably time to move on as Shockey created a bigger rift than was warranted through his comments to the press. His injuries over the last few years could mean he may never be the great playmaker he was early on as a Giant. I do think he'll have a bit of a boost with Payton and Brees on his side, but we'll see how long his career will be.

Thing that people will 2nd guess is that they could've gotten a 2nd and 5th from the Saints before this years draft when the Saints were picking earlier than they likely will be picking next year. Too early to tell that though. And the situation probably got worse after the draft.

what about giants season tix? what will be their renewal rate this season?
NYKBocker @ 7/21/2008 3:15 PM
WOW is right. I can't believe how much of a selfish player Shockey truly is.

They are already 100% renewed.

Sweet. I'm loving the Giants GM. Just putting on a clinic.
franco12 @ 7/21/2008 3:20 PM
seemed like shockey had one great season - his first - and coasted off that.

To be fair he played through some serious injuries every year he's been in the league. I think they've started to add up.

Giants GM is great. He did learn from another good GM, Ernie Accorsi. Accorsi set the foundation and Reese put them over the top and just keeps proving his greatness.

I won't get into the reasons why Accorsi wasn't a great GM, but I will say if Accorsi was still here Shockey would probably still be a Giant, for better or worse. Accorsi was like a father figure for Shock (who didn't grow up with a father and has always been a bit of an overgrown kid), and Shock has never really gotten along with Coughlin. EA leaving last year, along with Wellington Mara passing a couple years ago probably had a big effect on him. And he doesn't seem to get along with Reese either, as they got into a shouting match a few weeks ago.

His ticket was punched when he was shown sulking in the luxury box during the Superbowl.

Definitely been the beneficiary of hype over the years.

Great trade by the Giants as they get value for Shockey despite the fact that his best days are clearly behind him. The picks are definitely better than getting Taylor at this point.
Vmart @ 7/21/2008 6:49 PM
I'm very happy with the departure of Shockey. I never learned to like him. The perception I got from him was he was bigger than the team and that bothered me a lot and his idiotic penalties. I glad he is finally gone.

Knicks need to learn a less from this move. Why is Marbury even still a Knick? There is no way Marbury should be back. I alwas felt Shockey and Marbury had similar attitudes.

Sounds like Shockey really gave em no choice- from Mike Garafalo:

MG:

"We were kind of hoping he would get over it and change his mind because we weren't really looking to trade him," said a high-ranking team official, who asked to remain nameless because the Giants haven't publicly discussed their thought process or how the trade came about. "The Saints held firm (to their offer of second- and fifth-round picks) and with camp set to begin we felt it was best to trade him."

The chances of Shockey showing up to camp weren't very good in many folks' opinion. And the same people believed if he eventually showed up, he would have been a distraction the team didn't need.

"He was practically begging to be traded," the team official said. "He just didn't want to be here anymore. We just felt if he came into camp with that attitude he would be disruptive and it would be a problem."

Yeah, but he hasnt gotten 1/100th of Marbury's bad press. But I guess winning is the all-purpose deodorant. At least I hope.
