One of the biggest names bandied about as Thursday's trade deadline approaches has found a new home.

Mark Teixeira

Teixeira
Casey Kotchman

Kotchman

Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark on Tuesday that Atlanta Braves first baseman Mark Teixeira is headed to the Los Angeles Angels for Casey Kotchman and minor league pitcher Steven Marek.

Kotchman was pulled off the field during pregame warmups at Fenway Park on Tuesday afternoon, further fueling speculation that a deal was in place.

Teixeira was traded to the Braves from the Texas Rangers in a deadline deal last season, but he is in the last year of his contract. With Atlanta falling out of contention, it seemed logical that the team would try to move him.

The switch-hitting Teixeira is batting .283 with 20 home runs and 78 RBIs this season.

Kotchman, who is known as much for his defense at first base as his bat, is batting .287 with 12 homers and 54 RBIs for the first-place Angels.

did you mean Mark TEIXEIRA?
BigSm00th @ 7/29/2008 7:25 PM
angels are the best team in the AL, yanks could be 2nd best though and anything is possible in october.
Bonn1997 @ 7/29/2008 7:35 PM
I really wanted the Yankees to get him. I've wanted them to for a long time now. Hopefully he won't sign an extension with the Angels.

i doubt they woulda traded away Kotch for a 2 month rental player... u can pretty much scratch Tex off our wishlist at this point, unless we make him an offer he simply can't refuse... i don't think they're gonna go that route tho, especially w/Jorge's situation up in the air the way it is & how he may very well have to spend a good amount of time playing 1B at some point or another if his shoulder doesn't heal properly.
Bonn1997 @ 7/29/2008 9:04 PM
I think you're right. I don't know what their long-term plan (if they have one) is for first base.
TMS @ 7/29/2008 9:16 PM
i'm thinking Giambi will be re-signed for another year based on his performance & Sexson maybe retained as a backup if he performs a little down the stretch... Nady can also play some 1B if they plan on keeping him around past this season.
Bonn1997 @ 7/29/2008 9:54 PM
That's an OK short-term plan, but what about the long-term? Are there any FAs they have their eyes on or prospects in the farm system? It doesn't look to me like they have a long-term plan for 1st base but hopefully I'm wrong.
TMS @ 7/29/2008 10:08 PM
none in the farm system other than that Miranda cat & Eric Duncan, who thus far has proven to be a highly overrated bust of a prospect... not sure how Miranda's progressing lately but doesn't sound like he's in our plans for next season.

who knows what will happen a year from that... all kinds of players may become available.
Finestrg @ 7/29/2008 10:40 PM
Kotchman's a good player. How good's the pitching prospect (Marek) they gave up? Anyone know?
TMS @ 7/29/2008 10:44 PM
Kotchman's definitely gritty & a good ballplayer, but Tex is elite at his position... he's gonna add another scary bat to their lineup & a gold glove calibre defender at 1B, switch hitter besides... we better upgrade the pitching staff cuz looks like our rivals are getting on the trade wagon & making some big moves for their own teams right now.

oh God, please let that Greinke trade go down.

VDesai mentioned it might go down in the Yankees thread... i haven't heard anything about it either, but i have long been wanting for Zach to become a Yankee & if it happens i'm gonna be completely stoked... i think he's a future ace in the making.

After tomorrow's game, guess who will we go up against?

Just when the Yanks start playing terrible baseball again we get the Angels...
TMS @ 7/29/2008 11:01 PM
just as quickly as they turned it bad they can turn it back around again, keep the faith man... hopefully Andy can be a stopper & Joba pitches the way he did at Fenway.
Finestrg @ 7/29/2008 11:20 PM
Zack Greinke huh? Wow. Looked around and the only thing I saw about this was a little mention over at pinstripeplus.com where one of the posters said that a KC writer floated a Cano & Melky for Greinke swap. Only 25 yrs. old, 93-96 MPH fastball, great slider and a good change/split. He's a front-end of the rotation pitcher in the making, TMS, you're absolutely right. Think he just fanned 11 Oakland A's for a career high and he was throwing gas.

Possibly for Robby and the Melkman.... Cano's my fav. player - having said that, that's not a bad trade talent for talent. Say if they did this, do you play Betemit at 2B the rest of the way until you come up with something else? Interesting.... Think about if they could even pull this off w/o giving up Robby.... Hughes and Kennedy would definitely come into play then, you would think... Waht do you guys think of this? Rather give up Robby or top-tier prospects along with Melky if it came down to it?
nyk4ever @ 7/29/2008 11:26 PM
Since I'm lazy as hell right now... can someone please let me in on this Zach Greinke rumor?
TMS @ 7/29/2008 11:26 PM
i would much rather give up Hughes or Kennedy than Robbie Cano, it's not even close... if giving up 1 of those kids along w/some other prospects would get it done for Greinke i'd do it in a heartbeat... i might even give up both Hughes & Kennedy if KC were to add another player that could be of use to us, perhaps a catcher to be a stop gap til Jorge gets back?... we won't be looking at signing Greinke to huge bucks for another couple years at least, so it's a great investment to make.

more of an idea than a rumor... i proposed making a play for Greinke a while ago & VDesai mentioned he'd heard we might be going after him today.

Ah I see. I hope it comes to fruition.
