Off Topic · OT: My Madden '09 review for PS3 (page 1)

TMS @ 9/11/2008 9:25 PM

OK, I've had this game for exactly a week now & I'm already sick of it. This is by far 1 of the worst Madden NFL games I have ever bought. If you don't have it already, don't bother investing the $60 bucks to get this crappy version. I had Madden '07 on regular XBox & that game was 100 times better than this one for the PS3, it's not even close.

Main complaints:

- The gameplay is very sloshy & not nearly as responsive as the '07 XBox version was.

- If you like to play in Franchise mode like I do, this version will severely disappoint. The scouting of prospects, the newspaper stories after every game, the GM's e-mail box with updates on player status, the steady improvement of your players during the season if they perform well during games, the importance of maintaining good morale on your roster & with the fans by upgrading the stadium, improving concessions, giving out signing bonuses, etc. has all been taken out from this version.

- In order to use Brett Favre on the Jets in this game, you have to release him from the NFL Greats roster, & then he becomes a 25 year old rookie again with no recorded stats. The only other option is to manually create a 38 year old Brett Favre but even still you won't be able to see his career stats on his player profile. & How can you have an NFL Greats roster that doesn't have LT on it?!

- No custom plays or playbooks in Franchise mode. RIDICULOUS!!!

- Completely useless features like Rewind & the Virtual Trainer. Why EA focused on putting things like this into this game & forgot about including the ones they missed is beyond me. If you have to rewind every play that goes wrong to re-do them, what's the point in playing? & The older versions already had a Virtual Trainer feature... it's called "Practice Mode"... idiots.

Overall the graphics are good but still not what I expected to get out of this newer version on a next gen system. If they were gonna take out so many of the good features of the older version the least they coulda done was make the gameplay so unbelievable that fans of the game could be blown away by the visual elements. This one doesn't do it for me. Looks like I'm gonna be trading this one in. Too bad EA has exclusive rights for NFL games or else I'd get the 2K version if they made it.

I'm just glad they didn't use this cover for this version cuz this game doesn't live up to the hype at all.

i dunno, maybe u'll like it... for me i want my sports games to be a lot more than just arcade football action... i want a true simulation in franchise mode & u don't get that at all in this version... i'm gonna have my bro ship me my XBox so i can play my saved '07 franchise again.

on another note, can't wait for this to come out:

I'm the same way. I enjoy the moves on the franchise side more than I enjoy the actual games. Oh well, can't change history, hopefully I will like it.

I played a quick game last night by the way. Is it me, or is it difficult to run in that game
TMS @ 9/12/2008 1:53 PM
yeah i think it's definitely geared at a higher difficulty level, i guess to give u more of a sim experience... if u lower the running game difficulty u can break off some long runs like u used to do tho... but i don't like the sloshy feel of the controls, it feels like my guys are running around on slippery grass or something even when it's not raining... & the way the guys look upclose when u run ur replays, their movements look so artificial & unnatural, no? that annoys me too about this game... seems to me they rushed this product out to meet the proposed deadlines instead of making it what it coulda & shoulda been... for a 20th anniversary edition this one really doesn't cut it.

yeah, i've played madden for years but i had to custom set the difficulty, making me look like a beginner. this game made me feel idiotic. however, after i set it, i did like it. your right about the franchise mode, though. however, to be honest with you, this is just a fix to get me by until nba live/ nba 2k9 comes out, whichever one is better ( probably 2k9).
TMS @ 9/12/2008 7:09 PM
games i must get:

Star Wars Force Unleashed
NBA 2K9
Streetfighter 4
Streetfighter 2 Turbo HD (download off PSN)
Call of Duty 4
MLB: The Show '09 (when it comes out next year w/the new NY Stadiums)

just borrowed this one from my buddy & just wanted to note a few things:

- as this is only the prologue version & not yet a full production release, there are some essential missing elements that most racer game fans want... namely the ability to customize your ride with purchased mods, bodykits & custom graphics, all things that are offered in Forza Motorsport 2 for the XBox 360, which is way better for game play & overall fun factor right now... also, there's a very limited choice of production cars in this game that u can choose from... way more selection & hidden rides to unveil in the Forza title.

- driving dynamics also are not nearly as realistic as they are in Forza 2 for the 360... & the cars don't even show any damage to them when u crash into guard rails or ram someone from behind like they do in Forza.

- i will say tho, the graphics are UNFREAKINBELIEVABLE! it makes Forza look like an earlier gen system game, that's how detailed the background elements are in this game... if the full production version incorporates all the missing elements that Forza offers & yet still maintains this high level of graphics quality, this will be hands down the best driving game ever made.

* for now tho, if u want a good racer game, stick w/Forza Motorsport 2 for the XBox 360.

jazz74 @ 9/13/2008 8:36 PM
man, that street fighter trailer sure brought back memories of my college dorm days and constant tournaments. when the arcades were the place to go. anyway, the games i can't wait for are these:

nba live 09/ nba 2k9 ( which ever one is better)
ghostbuster videogame
bioshock 2
marvel ultimate alliance 2
and the most anticipated of all: resident evil 4!

lol... classic memories for sure... the arcade at the rec center was the very first stop to make after every class & i could be sure to see a buncha friendly faces whenever i went there... yo, i got my quarters up, i got next!!!

btw, i was the master of the ultimate cheese moves in Streetfighter 2 championship edition... my Jump in with kick, crouching jab, throw or blade kick combo w/Guile was vicious... mix that in w/an occasional fake out low kick instead of the throw when the other player tries to counter ur cheese move & ain't no beating me in that game.

LOL! yeah, i remember the cheap moves in street fighter. my friend used to keep me in the corner with ryu using the fireball and the uppercut. LOL! memories. oh, marvel ultimate alliance 2 comes out early next year and they said that it will focus a little on online play. so if we can get an ultimateknicks team going, i am for it. just as long as i have luke cage.

no, i wish they did since i am a gambit fan too. however, if you are a marvel comic fan, there are about 20 characters to choose from so it won't disappoint. believe me i got the game when i first got my 360 in december 2006 and i played well into the summer.

TMS @ 9/14/2008 4:25 PM
ah, ur on the 360... that's too bad, we won't be able to play on the same network.
