Congress, not the president makes the tax laws.
"Bush" tax laws expire in 2010. They don't "let them lapse", they expire.
It does not matter who is president, taxes will go up. The infrastucture of the county is in need of a revenue boost.
Every voting demographic wants to know whats in it for them. Some "republicans" vote that way for tax purposes. Biden is asking that group to jump on board and get with the program that the country needs money.
Personally I don't mind paying higher taxes so long as its reasonably not wasted. Governments are inherently ineffiecient. Socialism and communisim is even worse, so lets not think they do better in other lands, they don't. Don't think corruption does not exist in other lands, it does. We are a huge government, a huge economy, so our numbers are always big. One has to build in and expect government waste and corruption but keep fighting to make it better. Keep it going.
Our government is keeping the system going right now. This will cost billions. It dilutes the dollar and will be an inflater to our economy longer term.
We were on the edge yesterday and the system is working.

Check the philithrapic giving numbers? Its the rich. Who donates money to those nice schools you reside in? Who pays the highest real estate taxes? AMT? Sales taxes on big ticket items? Builds wings in hospitals, builds childrens hospitals, pays the largest stake of taxes?
Your taking a blanket statement and not thinking. Check out the backers of the democratic party? Who backs a party that will raise taxes if they did not think it was needed.
I find that most tax whiners are the ones who pay the least and protest that the "man" is out to get them.
Sure the rich have the most and they donate the most. That's hardly stunning. They also pay less in taxes and donate less here than in Canada or most European nations. If they don't want to pay high sales taxes or real estate taxes, they have the personal freedom to buy fewer things and live in less expensive homes.

I don't know many who earn a very good living, or invest well complain about taxes. The ones that struggle do.
