LMAO. Mike Francessa was beeotching all day yesterday how the Yanks need to stay away from CC b/c of how he clearly has no interest in playing in NY. I guess Mike just got PWNED!
Regardless, I'm sure not in love with CC, but I sure hope like hell it works.

I would like Burnett, don't want any part of Sheets
why? At least Sheets was once a healthy starter. AJ has never been. Either would be Wright/Pavano part II, but I would rather take Sheets at a discount then overpay for AJ who will bust. Sheets has great stuff
I agree fishy.

i'm guessing johan is perfectly paid for his services, right?
on a side note, the problem with the mets wasn't wagner, it was the 6-8 innings. so the mets swapped wagner with k-rod. lateral move at best. still haven't addressed 6-8 innings. stupid mets.
yeah, thats funny DJ....

Nice job Cash. Looks like he had to go as high as $160 over 7, but still, good job. I think CC came to realize there just wasn't the type of interest out there from other teams for that type of money that he expected. I wonder why Cash had to go to the 7th year - was it the Giants' alleged late involvement here or maybe the Yanks believed the Dodgers were preparing an offer?? Regardless, Cashman reeled in the big fish and worked very hard to get it done. Nice job!!!
I know this might sound nuts, but I think Mark Texieria might be the guy out there that makes the most sense for us right now. We now have CC, Wang, Joba as an awesome top 3 - which to me probably means no losing streaks beyond 2 games throughout the season provided we further bolster this lineup. We could probably get Pettitte back for a 1-year deal for $12-14 million to be the #4 and I'd have no problem with giving Hughes another shot to make the club as our #5, with Ian Kennedy/Al Aceves ready to go if there's an injury AND ALSO a slew of high-end minor league arms that might not be that far away from contributing (Brackman, Betances, Sanchez, Garcia, etc) .. That's not bad. Think about it, with our top 3 do we really need AJ Burnett now at $75 for 5 yrs. to be a #4? If anything, take a shot on Ben Sheets for only 2 yrs. Sheets worries me too - velocity looked way down last season. I still think losing Abreu and Giambi stings a lot. How do you replace that? Not with Nick Swisher alone that's for sure.
How I'd proceed -
(1) Make a strong offer for Mark Tex. If anything, it'll help jack the price up for either the Angels or even Boston who's said to be interested yet haven't even made an offer yet so who knows. IMO, he's the guy to protect A-Rod that this lineup's been missing. Or he could hit 3rd and help lengthen the lineup that way. (2) Go get Juan Cruz for added bullpen depth for a reasonable deal - he'd make a great fit as a replacement power arm for Joba who's now in the rotation - something like 3 yrs., $18 mil. is worth it for a guy with this type of ability IMO - I can't believe he's not drawing more interest. I think he's one of the better FA bullpen arms out there right now. Here's a guy that's good enough to close games IMHO. (3) If it's only 2 yrs., think about adding Ben Sheets as that extra FA starter. Velocity was down last season and he's so damn injury prone but for only 2 yrs. for a guy with his track record and ability (if he's right he's 92-95 with a hammer curveball) for a win now team. Only 30 years old too. Might be able to give us more or less what Burnett would but w/o the 5 yr. committment. He makes a lot of sense for us the more I think about it. (4) Keep exploring options with the Dodgers. I'm a big Cano guy but if I could get Matt Kemp and some more pitching help (maybe not Billingsley, but maybe a Clay Kershaw who's an ultra-young lefty starter that throws 95/96 with a good-looking curveball) for a Cano package, I'm interested. If anything happened, they could then move quickly on Orlando Hudson to take over 2B who's a solid vet and could do the job.

I'm down to take a chance on Sheets. 2 years is about right. I really wanna trade Cano...he is due to breakout but Ilm not willing to wait and find out. He's been a bust so far. He plays like he's 35 and looking like his career is winding down.
Abreu was not a good player. I have a feeling Manny is gonna be playing in right field or the yanks next year. Swisher can easily fill Giambi's role.
Pharzeone@ 12/10/2008 12:55 PM
Too much for a hefty pitcher but coming off his last two seasons, you have to make this deal. Lowe is a must also. Avoid Burnett at all cost. That guy only stays healthy during contract years. Texieria is now probably not a real option now I guess?

I like when the Mets fan talk all this crap and there team haven't amount to anything since 2000. Does all the Mets fan have forgotten about that big choke they did when the rookie St. Louis pitcher struck out carlos betran on high cheese and how they colapse with a 7 game lead leading to the playoffs some time back. How about when Timo Perez trotted thinking he got a homerun in the world series in 2000 and was gunned out. I can see Jose Reyes doing the same thing at some point.
BigRedDog@ 12/10/2008 4:48 PM
Lowe is 36 yrs old. You give him a 4 yr deal? Risky. Burnett and Sheets are both injury risks. Sheets has a torn muscle in his elbow. its all a crapshoot.

Overpaid like a mother...typical Yankees.
certainly the Mets wouldn't know anything about overpaying FA's.

ROFLMAO! dude, u have no idea what ur talking about... we had rotation issues all last year... Wang got injured, Andy P was inconsistent, both Hughes & Kennedy bombed out bigtime... the only constant was Mussina... we needed CC more than any other player & we got him... stop being a hater, be happy w/ur K-Rod signing & go proclaiming urselves the default WS champions before the season begins just like u guys love to do every year... then wait til ur joke of a team chokes down the stretch like they do every year.

even at his age he's a more reliable option than AJB... the guy is 1 of the most durable arms on the market & he's a proven postseason performer... given a choice between him & AJB i take Lowe every time, even tho i do love AJB's raw stuff.

Dude your offense sucks. Your best player hit .302. You lost a lot of games last year bc you could not drive in any runs. As for the Mets, we did choke back to back years, but it will only make us stronger. With prospects like Daniel Murphy and Francisco Martinez, the future is definately bright.

TMS@ 12/10/2008 6:51 PM
the Yankees' offense was 7th in the AL, not great but not crappy... every 1 of their offensive statlines across the board was above the AL league average last year... we had 1 reliable starter last year... our biggest need was for an ace calibre arm & we got one... i fail to see the issues u seem to have w/this signing... the Muts had a need for a closer & they went out & got one... hurray for you... stop hatin' & stop worrying about what the Yankees do... we'll be just fine.

yes, i dunno how we'll be able to contend w/o ace calibre arms like Jonathan Niese & Brandon Knight! LMAO! dude other than Johan there isn't 1 guy in your rotation i would even wanna consider even if he were coming at a huge discount... Pelfrey & Maine are average arms at best, put them in the AL & they're just your run of the mill starters... stop deluding urself.

If it wasnt for our bullpen Johan would have won the Cy Young and Pelfrey, Oliver and Maine would have had ATLEAST 16 wins.

“The Mets are looking at Pirates RHP Matt Capps and a few others, in addition to Rockies RHP Huston Street, as they begin to focus on a set-up man,” reports Jon Heyman on his live blog for SI.com.
Heyman also believes the Mets have talked to the Cubs and Mariners about ‘relief help.’
In 214 appearances in his four-year career, Capps, 25, is 15–11 with a 3.06 ERA through 217 innings, during which opponents are hitting .243 against while striking out 162 times.
Capps is eligible for arbitration in 2010 and 2011, after which he is eligible to be a free agent.

OOH! 16 wins! wow, that's impressive... come on dude, wake up... those guys would get creamed pitching in the AL East... Pelfrey's got a lifetime BAA in the .280's & an ERA in the low 4's & that's pitching against lineups w/o the DH... put him in the AL & he's nothing but your run of the mill average starting pitcher, believe that... John Maine was garbage in BAL his first 2 seasons.
& last time i checked Oliver Perez is a FA...
the ONLY pitcher on your roster the Yanks would even be remotely interested in is Johan.
