It was hot out this afternoon so my girlfriend and I went on a spur of the moment trip to the movies. I watched a lot of Star Trek when I was a kid, the TV show, all the movies, andeven the next generation and it's films. To me this could have been a colossal disaster, but it was actually amazing. There was enough in it for people who don't watch Trek to enjoy it and ton of inside jokes and moments for die hards. I left really impressed. The special effects were awesome, the story line was excellent, great acting (although it is a little weird to see new people playing characters we are so familiar with). The new Spock was really impressive. To me this movie took some of the best elements of Trek and Star war and produced a fantastic sci-fi masterpiece that will surely relaunch the franchise similar to what Batman Begins did for Batman. It is what the prequals to Star Wars should have been like. If you have any interest in it I highly recommend it - JJ Abrams did take a lot of liberties with Trek but I thought it was refreshing and stayed close enough to be authentic.

i fell asleep watching it, but i think it's because i was tired not because the movie was boring. i see at the top of the page there is an ad for star trek - imax. i betcha it would be a blast in an imax theater.

I might be one of the few out there who's always preferred Star Trek over Star Wars. Really enjoyed the old series and I like movies II-IV. Even have a soft spot for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I've been cracking up - Wrath of Kahn has been on cable almost every day recently... I can't wait to see this new movie. Next weekend hopefully..

I thought Cloverfield was awesome. Heard rumors about a possible sequel. Anyone hear anything?

my review- first and foremost, i haven't been a star trek fan since i was a kid and watching the old shows and filmation cartoon. the movies i would watch occasionally liking wrath of khan and voyage home the best but the rest was sort of subpar ( first contact was decent too). i always thought that star wars trumped it, however, this came out and i was impressed. it definately took me back to when i was a kid. very good story and acting . suspenseful and the sfx were top notch. this movie was amazing and it was smart to use the alternative reality root with the time travel so the past shows won't act as canon and they can take liberties in future movies ( like killing off one of the main characters with no reprecussions). however, i can tell that some trekkies would get angry at that. the amazing thing is how they focused on every character from the original star trek series and let them shine in their own right and they were good. urban as mccoy was excellent and i had to look twice to make sure it wasnt the same actor and pegg as scotty was a blast though his time was limited. then at the end, see them altogether forming like voltron ( figure of speak though) was great. this movie singlehandedly got me back to this genre and franchise and i can't wait for more.
