Off Topic · E-Bay bidding service? (page 1)

Do you use one? I've never used E-Bay before but it seems awesome. There's an exercise item I really want to get that is being auctioned. My dad recommended using bidnapper. What service if any do you use? Thanks!

I would rather use Craigslist but I have used Ebay both as a buyer and seller before. If you are looking for used exercise equipment--remember if its not local it could be quite expensive to ship.
Sometimes people contact you or vice versa and there is a way to circumvent the eBay fees but then you might get ripped off and that's that. I would think that if you used a local Craigslist ad--it might be easier if you can find the equipment you want. Even local classified newspapers--shopping close to home is preferable if you can do it because of logistics of actually getting the piece to your home or possibly trying it before you buy it.

Thanks. I'll see if I can find something similar on Craigs list.

What piece of equipment?
Bonn1997 @ 7/5/2009 1:17 PM
Concept II rower. I like rowing machines because they give a full body workout and are appropriate for HIIT (high intensity interval training), which is just a fancy way of saying that I can go at close to 100% effort for about 20 seconds followed by lower-intensity rest. That doesn't work on most aerobic machines. On a treadmill, for example, I can't really run at close to 100% effort without going at a speed that feels unsafe or a ridiculous incline.

You're not just asking so that you can outbid me, are you? That would be cruel!
VDesai @ 7/5/2009 3:25 PM
I would try on your own a couple times (provided you have the time to monitor the bidding in the last few minutes). Its not that hard to win- though losing a few times will get you a little frustrated
Bonn1997 @ 7/5/2009 3:30 PM
Well bidnapper is free for the 1st 15 days

I got one. About 4 years old. Got it new. I built a gym in my old house with a home theatre in it. It was great. I moved last year and I can walk to a place that has full indoor tennis and state of the art gym. I gave away my spin bike, still have my weights but use the eliptical and my rower in the basement. Have yet to put the Rower back together. Its a great rower!! Kicks my ass.

I looked for a used one and was always amazed how much they went for and how much people spend on the used. I paid about 900 for mine with some extras on it. Heart monitor works great.

Problem on the Concept is getting someone to ship it.

Good luck. Don't over pay. Be patient.

Bonn1997 @ 7/6/2009 12:22 AM
Sounds like you have an awesome gym. I entered my max bid on bidnapper. It's significantly lower than the price of new ones. I hear ya on not paying too much. I entered a high value earlier but then thought it over and revised the value. Yeah shipping could get complicated. The guy estimated it would be around $80 to ship to me. He has a long history and 100% positive rating. So hopefully he's not going to try to screw me with the shipping.

Does this bidding history look suspicious?

http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?V...

My dad told me that sometimes people will have their friends bid (with no intention of following through on the deal) just to drive the price up. In this case, there are two bidders (who have each bid twice). A few things caught my attention, though.
-The two bidders have no prior bidding history on E-bay.
-On two occasions, the same bidder has bid against himself! (kind of like us with Allan Houston!) First, bidder A bid $350; then 18 seconds later he bid $375. Then bidder B entered two separate bids of $380.
-They keep driving up the price well before the end time of the auction (over a day left).

YOur reading it wrong. I can't retype the instructions and how it works here but that is not what is happening.

I have bought many things on e-bay over the years so I will give you my rules:

1. don't pay more than 66% of retail price on somthing new.

2. If its too good to be true, it is.

3. Don't buy things straight from china sellers.

4. DON'T WORRY ABOUT SNIPER BIDDERS WHO WILL GET YOU IN THE END. IT HAPPENS. SET YOUR PRICE AND LET OTHERS CHASE YOU. IF THEY EXCEED THEY OVERPAY. KNOW YOUR MARKET. WATCH OTHER ROWERS AND WHAT THE PRICES ARE. THIS MAY TAKE A FEW DAYS OR WEEKS DEPENDING ON TRAFFIC. IF YOU ARE NOT PATIENT THEN EXPECT TO PAY WHAT YOU PAY OR BUY NEW. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT SOMEONE WILL OUT BID YOU FOR A DOLLAR. THIS IS NOT TRUE, THEY SET A HIGHER PRICE AND MIGHT HAVE GONE MUCH HIGHER. I HAVE SEEN BIDS LOSE TOUCH WITH REALITY MANY TIMES AS NEWBIES GET COMPETITIVE. LOOK AT BUYING NEW AND ENJOY WARRANTY AND NOT GETTING BURNED. MOST PEOPLE ARE HONEST BUT "AS IS" IS JUST THAT. THESE MACHINES HAVE ELECTRONICS THAT ARE SENSITIVE.

Dad is right as there are irregularities, but thats not what your seeing.

Good luck.

Bonn1997 @ 7/6/2009 7:58 AM
Thanks man. This rower is about 20 years old although everything was serviced and replaced 2 years ago. I set my bad at roughly half what a new, base model Concept II would cost, and I'm not going to go above that.
Nalod @ 7/6/2009 9:34 AM
Wheres the bid???

That is one old machine. THe electronics are pretty old on that one.

They all work about the same and those old metal ones are pretty cool.

He mentioned "Bungie cord"? Is that the pully? Mine is a bike style chain. IM sure its fine.

Concept is a cool company. I always wanted to buy a rowing skull and get into it but they are expensive and I don't want anymore toys that are not used regularly.

I just moved onto a small lake but its really too small to get any kind of work out in. I gotta get used Canoe for my daughter.
Bonn1997 @ 7/6/2009 10:13 AM
I assume bungie cord means the thing you pull. My bid hasn't appeared yet. Bidnapper will (supposedly) bid the lowest amount necessary up to my maximum for me at the last minute.

I use ebay all the time. I never bid on items that I would be devastated if they broke down in a year(had a bad experience with a stereo once) and I have a preset price in my head. If I can't get it for that price I move on. They say, never go into a grocery store hungry. Well, never go to ebay desperate. I've had great success on ebay and have gotten many good deals.

As for Craigslist, I use it all the time for must have items. I live just outside of Boston so you never know who you are going to run into. When I go pick up an item off Craig's list I always bring a couple friends with me and make the person bring the item outside. Or I meet them in a public place. Can't be too trusting nowadays.

I saw some newbie lost the bid.

Was that you?

Do you understand how this works now?

That guy that won might have been willing to go to $500 but since you were not he paid less. Thats why I do my7 own bidding, set the price and let others do what they gotta do.

It might seem like you only lost by $4 but you don't know what his high limit was.

Bonn1997 @ 7/7/2009 10:59 AM
Yeah, I knew that might happen in advance. The guy was willing to go above my max price. He may have been willing to go up to $1000 for all I know! Good for him. No big deal. There's other rowers on E-Bay.
sebstar @ 7/7/2009 2:50 PM
Take Briggs advice and just mess with local cats on Craigslist. People you can meet face-to-face. Great place to get hookers from what I hear. Briggs hustle.
Bonn1997 @ 7/7/2009 6:21 PM
I just bought something on E-Bay!!! It was just a $2.98 (w/ free shipping) Schipperke refrigerator magnet for my neighbor who has two schipperkes.

"Schipperke"? That thare some kind of doggie "bukkake" thing they make fridge magnets out of?

Buying fridge magnets of doggies, as well as those mall kiosk coffee mugs, t-shirts and bumperstickers are really really not cool. Its says so much about you!

All dog lovers have dog items. It's no different than having sports items except that the dogs are actually a real part of your life whereas you'll never even meet the athletes whose posters or jerseys you have.
