Episode Title: "Night on the Sun"
Written By: Raelle Tucker
Story: Following the traumatic events of last week's episode, Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) decide to change the nature of their relationship, but they both find out that absence makes the heart grow fonder. Finally home from Jackson, Tara (Rutina Wesley) finally has time for a breakdown. Jason (Ryan Kwanten) attempts to protect Crystal (Lindsay Pulsipher) from her abusive father and brother, but he may be barking up the wrong tree based on an unusual scent caught by the Merlotte brothers. Bill goes into Obi-Wan Kenobi mode, training Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) in the ways of the vampire. Finally, after one thousand years of patience, Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård) makes his move against King Russell Edgington (Denis O'Hare).
Breaking Up Is Hard To Do: The vast majority of "Night on the Sun" was spent bringing the tension up to a boil with its final series of sequences — and while that formula may have made for a relatively lackluster episode, the excitement kicked into full gear with roughly ten minutes remaining, resulting in one of the most action-packed episodes of "True Blood" to date.
First, any "True Blood" episode that features a very naked Alexander Skarsgård in the heat of the moment deserves a round of applause. But it was even more exhilarating watching as Eric fatally impaled Talbot (Theo Alexander) — and no, that's not a euphemism, as the Swedish vampire literally stabbed Russell's lover straight through the heart in retaliation for Russell's cleansing of the Northman clan over 1,000 years earlier. Here's hoping that Eric and Russell go toe-to-toe before too much longer.
Eric wasn't the only character waist-deep in blood, as Debbie Pelt (Brit Morgan) and a pack of werewolves assaulted Sookie's home on Russell's orders — but Bill and Jessica were thankfully at hand, literally tearing the wolves a new one. Although they had broken up earlier in the episode in light of Bill's recent bloody actions towards Sookie, the two lovers found themselves more drawn to each other than ever before, leading to one of the most bizarre makeup sex scenes in television history.
The rest of the episode was relatively event-free, mostly focusing on the relationships between characters such as Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) and Jesus (Kevin Alejandro), Hoyt (Jim Parrack) and Jessica and Jason and Crystal. Even long dead villain Rene (Michael Raymond-James) made a guest appearance in one of Arlene's (Carrie Preston) dream sequences. Perhaps most compelling was the missed love connection between Alcide (Joe Manganiello) and Sookie, who both admitted to each other that they would probably be in love with one another if they weren't so dumb — but the chemistry between the two of them was undeniable as Alcide left Sookie's side to return home. It goes without saying that we haven't seen the last of these two together.
The Merlotte brothers, meanwhile, have firmly asserted themselves in Jason's storyline, as Sam (Sam Trammell) and Tommy (Marshall Allman) clearly have a grudge to settle against Crystal's father and fiance. That should be an epic showdown, whenever it comes to pass.
