the new stage in car audio entertainment

I just wish it would support excel, then I would buy it immediately.

Its wonderful as an adjunct to the computer. In fact you need a computer to get it started. My wife really likes it as do I. Just pick it up start having at it. Got a keyboard dock which is really sweet also.

Talked to a school IT guy and they are looking at them because its half the price of the macbook.

Granted its a "tablet" and others are likely as good or better but its the "apple" goodness baked in and being the category killers they are set the tone for the technology. Its a consumer product. Briliant really!

I am huge apple fan and can't live for fifteen minutes separated from my iPhone. But to have something with full scale notebook computing power yet not have a true operating system is a mismatch of sorts. Having said that I will definitely buy an iPad soon.

$800 for a 64GB ipad is prohibitive IMO... you can get a fullscale laptop with a 500GB HD & much faster processor at that price... also doesn't support flash video... to me it's still a gimmick device until the price drops... doesn't play dvd's or bluray disks either, which to me is important while travelling.

I concur. I think the iPad is a cool "toy", but it's basically an in-between (tweener?) device that doesn't serve any real purpose other than wasting money if you have money to burn. For the price tag, it's not powerful enough to be a replacement laptop. It's too expensive to be useful as a GPS and mp3 player replacement. It's too large to be used as a portable mp3 player. It's too pricy as an e-book reader. I think the iPad is very cool, but I don't see the practical use. To be worthwhile, I think it would have to be either more powerful, so the power was closer to paralleling a Macbook or half the price. Not having a real OS is obviously problematic. Not a good value, IMHO.

But, then they've already sold millions of units, so what the hell do I know?

loweyecue @ 6/5/2010 4:35 PM
The thing is this doesn't have to be a "laptop" in the traditional sense and still be quite useful. The iPhone already offers a wide array of apps and functionality, these things are becoming personal lifestyle devices. Memory can be external, no biggie. But the lack of real operating system still bothers me, they could easily get both Mac OS and iPhone OS on the same device and toggle as needed.

They start at 499$ with wifi connect ability.

Its not a computer. Its a big Ipod touch

Its a CONSUMER product.

TMS, $ for $, gig for gig, its not a high value spec machine. My mother got one cuz this is all she needs. ANd for what it does it does it very well. Especially for people who are not computer literate.

all it is is an iphone with a larger screen & no calling functionality... an oversized itouch pretty much... a cool device but that's all it really is... not practical at all & not worth the money they're charging in terms of the value you get... they've sold a ton of these things based on consumer hype & "coolness" factor, but do u really see yourself carrying this thing around everywhere you go? i don't... i would much rather spend the $300 for the new 4G iphone that's coming out in a couple weeks, which can do everything the ipad can do & more & is much more portable... if i want to watch movies while travelling i can just bring along my portable dvd player or laptop.

You can load your DVD's onto it as MP4 or M4V files through iTunes - then you dont need to bring the discs with you. Thats what I do with mine and I have a bunch of movies on it I watch while I am flying.

If you have a Wifi connection you can stream movies from your computer to your iPad - I havent done that but theoretically if you left your computer on at home and you had WiFi on a plane you could stream to your iPad - kind of cool.

It is sort of a gimmick device but if you travel a lot it is useful. Also, if you haven't used one yet, it is really fun to use. Much nicer than an iphone or a notebook.

Dude, I don't carry this thing outside the house. I'll take it to my beach house. I don't have or need a 3G phone. I can stream my netflix account. I don't hardly own DVDs. The price to me was a bargain. I have an iPod, but can use this to stream internet radio. I don't wnant my phone doing that. I need my phone to actually make calls on, not entertain me.

movies take up a ton of HD space... the top of the line model has 64gigs, not that much space to hold movies in... if the ipad offered a 250GB model at around $1K i would snatch it up in heartbeat, but right now again i think it's a gimmick product... fine for some people who just want something to carry around the house & browse the web but not really all that functional or great of a value for the money if you ask me... to each their own... until Apple ups the ante & raises the gig space on this thing, or drops the price, i don't think i'll be getting one... the idea is great, but the product itself has a long way to go to be a good value to me... just MHO.
