I stopped spending the $$$ on the pay versions of antivirus cause if your PC(s) gonna get a virus
no matter what you do you'll get it.
My issue is performance.
Which free Anti-virus do you like best for lowest PC performance impacts (i.e. no huges slow computer downs)
I've looked at AVG, AVAST, Panda and PCTools. Even went to Microsoft security essentials. All have pros and cons.
Which do you like ? which is more stable and why ?
Or do you really have to pay for good antivirus to avoid PC lags and bog-downs.

I use Avast on my Windows machines. I also installed Fedora on a couple instead of Windows.
AVG is good as long as you set it to scan while you're at work. It's an utter hog if you're trying to use the computer while it's scanning. Avast is not bad.

i've used McAfee, Norton, AVG & Avast all on my PC's in the past... so far Avast is by far the best one i've tried... most hassle free & catches everything & updates everything automatically.. plus it's free... can't beat that.

McAfee and Norton are horrible. I haven't trusted Norton in many years after I found out they were selling auto-allows for their firewall. Basically, companies would pay them money and then Norton would add them to the auto-allow list; some on this auto-allow list were spyware.
i agree, they're both horrible & a complete waste of money & HD space... Avast caught stuff on my PC that the others never did... i'll never go back to paying for AV protection again when the free stuff performs so much better.

The first Antivirus products I used were Norton Antivirus & McAfee back in the early 90's. Peter Norton was trustworthy, and McAfee was shareware back then. I grew to hate both products for technical reasons, and also because of the way they treat you as a customer. The only other product I have much experience with is AVG, and they've started getting kind of obnoxious too.

I use that too and got it for free.

i second this. its very lightweight - it's what i'm currently using and i'm in the IT field.
