Off Topic · Tragic OT: Massive Earthquake in Japan: (page 4)

This is not good. I'm watching CNN and there's about 50 workers trying to contain the reactors and are potentially being exposed to lethal doses of radiation as they try to contain it. The nuclear situation is upgraded to level 6. This is getting scary. Looks like the power company was lying about the situation and it was worse than they were indicating.

my folks tell me there's a horde of Japanese trying to immigrate out of the country now with the mess they have to clean up i can't blame them... it's a horrible situation to have to live in.

Yeah. No doubt. I can't believe that this tragedy may get far worse than the tsunami. I'm afraid for Japan and the world, frankly... with 6 reactors, who knows if this could even get worse than Chernobyl.

I don't want to call that article "awesome" but at the very least it is some silver lining

Just saw this story about these dogs that were victims of this disaster, I wonder if their owners are even alive. Pretty heartbreaking video if you love dogs:

Ugh, those are ridiculous comments, but then whoever put that image together was clearly looking for it, as the term was highlighted. Let's not get distracted because there are a few idiots out there.

Feeling really terrible for Japan right now.

Japan has all my sympathy btw

I wasn't looking to distract, just to come with an interesting compilation of idiots I stumbled upon in relation to the same topic. I was just amazed to see so many of them, being inhumane as phuck, but I know it's a tiny minority of people who thinks like that. I just guess they haven't heard of Hiroshima or Nagasaki.

clearly being the only country to ever use a nuclear weapon on the other in the history of human kind means nothing to these dolts they must think the Japanese got what they deserved & that's that... it's scary to know this kind of ignorance persists in today's world it makes me sad for people that are so closeminded & hateful.

While I agree in principle about taking the high road and all, I think its essential to actually address this problem instead of ignoring it. Because in my limited perception its a growing problem. People are becoming increasingly more selfish, consumed by their righteousness and less and less human. This is just one manifestation of a wider more pervasive issue.

i agree, it's a dangerous underlying hatred that exists among some people out there they hate & resent minorities in this country not even a human tragedy of epic proportions like what happened in Japan can make them put away their hatred for a moment to even consider the human devastation that just occurred... God forbid anything like that ever happened to them & their loved ones, karma indeed.

I'm sorry but how does that picture of internet posts become all about ignorance and hating minorities? Did you look at the names and pictures of the people who posted negative comments? Looked pretty diverse to me unless I am missing something.

I do agree that selfishness and greed in this country/world is a growing problem. I also think that ignorance and racism is something that is equally shared among every ethnic and cultural group on the planet. To single out non minorities is wrong since we are all part of the problem. Until the finger stops being pointed and blame stops being assigned, we will not move beyond the racial issues that plague us.

Oasis, you're right i should have looked more closely at the faces on those posts I agree racism is a problem shared among all races not just non-minorities... apologies for my over generalization.

No problem, I am with you - racism is a huge problem. We spend our time worrying about a lot of things that are far less important unfortunately. I don't think this country has made great progress in terms of working on removing prejudice and social stigmas. It's pretty sad actually and I know all of us are to blame but you would think there would be more emphasis on it than there is from all of the communities involved.

Yeah, amazing. Hoping the other dog will be ok. Animals always amaze me.

It reminds me of something. Not that long ago, there was a fire at a neighbor's backyard tiki hut, so we had to evacuate for an hour, before we could go back in. I got the cats out, two in a carrier bag and one in a cage (had three here at the time before I gave the kitten to my ex). Anyway, when we got outside, I noticed I couldn't really see the kitten at all, as the other cat was completely ontop of the kitten. I realized that it was a little chilly outside and he was keeping her warm. Animals are simply amazing sometimes.

Yeah, that was kind of funny. I'm sure that ignorant bitch feels pretty stupid right now. If she would just post an apology video, I'm sure people would start to leave her alone.

Just read that chick idiot is leaving UCLA.

Didn't know this and my memory may be off a little, but in same article: UCLA student body is 37% Asian, 32% white. That surprised me for some reason.

Unfortunately the Lybia situation (which is also serious business) has pushed the media coverage of the Japan disasters to the side. Hopefully they will strike a better balance.

That girl must have sat next to a couple of loud people who were Asian, in the library and failed her test, and thinks it's their fault. Meanwhile, all she had to do was go to a different part of the library. Her emotions must have been raging if she was dumb enough to post an assinine video like that. Never make decisions based on your emotions. She deserves what she got.

And if people actually get offended by what that broad says, just stop. Save yourself the anger and emotion for something actually important (Anti racism is extremely important for the record) because her opinion has absolutely no value, she clearly isn't worthy of a UCLA education, and the backlash she has caused has been much much stronger than her video. I feel bad for people like her. Ignorance is not bliss and neither is hatred. Those 2 combined, and you might as well be blind and deaf.

Sorry but that is anacceptable. The core problem here is racism and for the longest time people have avoided facing it by imposing a social norm of political correctness. That has doen nothing to fix the problem but has made it OK for people to be racist as long as they don't go out of their way to insult other people openly. Now you are saying that it is somehow acceptable to actaully go out of your way to insult others and people can't be offended by it? What is next on that line of reasoning?

This isn't over unfortunately. Very sad and very scary.

Japan Quietly Evacuating a Wider Radius From Reactors

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/26/world/...

Japanese officials began quietly encouraging people to evacuate a larger swath of territory around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant on Friday, a sign that they hold little hope that the crippled facility will soon be brought under control.

Japan: Injured workers exposed to 10,000 times safe radiation

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/22/20110325/tts...

Japan said on Friday that workers who suffered burns while trying to cool a crippled reactor were exposed to radiation levels 10,000 times higher than expected, adding evidence that the crucial containment vessel for nuclear fuel had been ruptured.

That could mean a serious reversal after days of apparently steady progress in containing radiation leaks after a killer earthquake and tsunami tore through the Fukushima complex north of Tokyo two weeks ago.

True, you didn't say it was acceptable. That was the sense I got when I read you asking people to stop feeling offended at something so patently offensive. That was the only conclusion I could draw from it. For what it's worth IMO, if this type of behaviour is allowed to continue it gets worse. So yes I think its very important for people to express their views against it.
