Knicks · Should the Knicks draft Bismack Biyombo? (page 1)

metra @ 4/10/2011 12:07 PM
This dude sounds absolutely perfect for us.

He just recorded the first triple double in the Nike Hoop Summit with 10 BLOCKS. His #1 priority is DEFENSE. I quote, "In the ACB I play with a lot of smart guys, I play with a lot of strong guys, and when I step on the court I just want to kill them." Stands only 6'8 but has a wingspan of 7'7.

The two knocks on him so far are
1. Most doubt he's 18
2. International

with a name like that, why do not you draft him?

but this killing talk is worrisome.

nyvector16 @ 4/10/2011 12:12 PM
Most of the time when there is even subtle hype around a draft prospect his stock soars out of the selection we have.
It happened with Stephen Curry when he could'nt shut his mouth about wanting to be drafted by the Knicks.

Bismack is being mentioned on the Yahoo front page this morning. He will be a lottery or early teens pick by the end of the week.

Although I could see the Knicks trading Fields for a high lottery pick this offseason. Otherwise they will have to pay him and that would impact 2012 cap space.

loweyecue @ 4/10/2011 12:22 PM
Is that his real name? That alone should be reason enough to hire him.
CashMoney @ 4/10/2011 12:36 PM
We need a C and 6'8 won't cut it.
EwingsGlass @ 4/10/2011 1:35 PM
Although this is the first I've heard of him, so far from what I see I like. The concept of his 6'775 (6'9 in shoes) being an impediment is based solely on assumptions about height versus size and strength. Nothwithstanding his height. His 7'7 wingspan and his 250 lbs make him more suitable to start on this team than Jeffries, Turiaf or Shelden Williams. I mean, whether he is the starting center on some nights or if he is the defensive PF we need, if he is available you need to give him a long hard look. Worst case scenario on this kid is Reggie Williams. With the 17th or so pick, I'll take that.
Knixkik @ 4/10/2011 2:09 PM
We should consider trading the pick for the best available center who is on his rookie contract such as Jason Thompson, Robin Lopez, etc. Maybe even get back Mozgov. These are options where we know we have an upgrade at center and still significant upside with the player to becoming a long term starting center.

He has weight and a 7'7" wingspan will cut it. You block with your hands, not your head (to a point). As long as he has body (and he does) he will be fine. You don't need to be 7', but you do need body and reach.

If he really is 18, he is lotto. He tore the camp up.

tkf @ 4/10/2011 2:49 PM
I like that justin Harper kid as well

I'd rather take a 7 footer with a similar wingspan. Elton Brand had a 7'5 wingspan. I wouldn't want him playing C would you?

Killa4luv @ 4/10/2011 4:22 PM
We already have this player. his name is Sheldon Williams. 6-9 7-4.25 wingspan.
earthmansurfer @ 4/10/2011 4:49 PM
CashMoney - Good point, but in fairness Brand isn't exactly an athletic wonder, doesn't have great hops. He seems more of a big body but is agile enough with good moves.

Killa4luv - Sheldon isn't bad, but isn't athletic. Biyombo is über athletic, big difference.

Anyway guys, don't get me wrong as this kid will probably long be gone. That said, what is 3" in height, when you got that kind of reach and a big body too boot. I do miss Mos...

metra @ 4/10/2011 5:12 PM
Damn I feel like some people in this thread are forgetting that Ben Wallace and Dennis Rodman were both under 6'9. Plus if this kid's really 18, he can still grow.

Finally, Bismack's projected to go right around where we are drafting. We definitely have a chance.

Nalod @ 4/10/2011 6:02 PM
How much does he weight?

Does he have an NBA body and the legs to play the 5?

I doubt we want 18 year olds with this team. Not unless you raise the value and then trade them.

toodarkmark @ 4/10/2011 6:59 PM
There are no 7 footers that are tough and available to use at our pick, which will be what, 16th? I don't much care for Biyombo because he will take years to develop. I see these guys as available to us:

6'9 Markieff Morris.
6'9 Trey Thompkins
6'8 Kenneth Faried.

They are all undersized for the center position.

I am of the school to take the best player available, and trade that player for a center now.

Solace @ 4/10/2011 7:04 PM
I disagree with the best player available theory, because I think it heavily underestimates how difficult it is to make the trade afterwards. If we have the trade lined up before the draft and make the trade on draft day, fine. But, otherwise, best player available is a garbage theory to me, as a lot of the time, you get stuck with that player and he doesn't play, nor fill any holes in your team.

Or you get the best player available and your team gets better.

In our case, with the players you listed, do you see that happening? I don't.

Matters who is there at the time we're picking. I would rather pick the most talented point guard, shooting guard, power forward before I pick the best "big guy" on the board. Case in point. 1999. We have Latrell Sprewell and Alan Houston. We need a center. So the Knicks choose F Weiss over Ron Artest. There ya go. That's the mentality I HATE.

Well, that's a different issue. I don't suggest making a stupid pick as a counter to best player available. I'm just saying, let's say there's 5 good players. You rank them 1-5. #5 fits your system the best and you're a playoff team. IMHO, you take #5. I don't suggest reaching 30 slots for no reason, however.

I think Morris is a great option, but there definitely aren't any 7'footers who will be able to make an immediate contribution. I am calling teams up to see what young bigs may be available for our 1st round pick. I'm thinking Robin Lopez, Jason Thompson, or even Mozgov are potential options. Just an idea.
