Off Topic · A Game of Thrones - HBO - Best Novels Ever (page 1)

A Game of Thrones Mini-series on HBO starts Sun night and is replayed throughout the week. This is based on the best fantasy adventure novels I have ever read, surpassing Lord of the Rings. Written by George R. R. Martin. It has a tremendously attention-holding and intricate plot; great characters; mystery; intrigue; sex; killing; baudiness; great foreshadowing of events; and a tiny bit of magic and mysticism. The HBO series previews are getting a lot of hype and play. It should be excellent. Have to fit it in, inbetween Knicks games. Even better, I recommend you read the books.

Trailer:

First 14 minutes of the 1st episode -(pre-released)

I've been waiting for this since I first heard about it. Unfortunately, the first episode is this Sunday at 9PM during the Knicks game.

Have read the books and this is the first time in a while that I'm pissed I don't have HBO. May have to call my cable company!

You might be in luck. I'm not sure how accurate it is but I just read that HBO is having a free weekend, so you'll be able to watch the first episode at least.

It's not a mini-series, it's a regular series. There will be seasons for it.

I can't wait to watch it. I never read the books but I'm into this genre. Everything I've seen so far looks pretty good. Plus Sean Bean is a good actor.

Yes.....the first book, A Game of Thrones, will be aired in 10 episodes this year. Hopefully they will continue with the next books, one book per season and make it a series.

Since you are into this genre, I very highly recommend reading the books. Incredibly intricate in plot and characters and many small details which foreshadow future events. Hard to imagine that the movie can capture all of this. The series still should be great to watch.

A Game of Thrones reviews:

Ken Tucker of Entertainment Weekly has posted his review and gives the show an A-.

You may find yourself beginning Game of Thrones and getting lost in its thicket of who’s related to whom and remembering what grudge one clan holds against another, but I implore you: Stick with it. Free your eyes to take in the spectacle, and your brain will magically start following the intricate storytelling. And there’s a magical realism to Game of Thrones.

Ethan Anderton of Collider reviews the first episode (although it sounds like he’s seen all 6).

However, as it stands, Game of Thrones is a compelling journey into fantasy that only HBO can deliver. There’s carnage, sex and some of the saltiest language I’ve ever heard in an epic series of this type. It’s strange seeing a character in a medieval like fantasy world dropping F-bombs amongst other choice words, but it makes the series that much more gritty and jarring. Complete with stellar writing, a phenomenal cast and stunning visuals, this is a series that delivers on an epic scale both literally and figuratively.

Charlie Jane Anders of io9 gives her take on the series.

In a nutshell: the series features a host of astonishingly powerful performances that bring a depth and maturity that you seldom see on television, in any genre. And it looks absolutely gorgeous.

Just for fun, the latest trailer. It should excite some of the Alba thread regulars.

I've never read the books (I've always been more of a Dragonlance guy) and I was about to give up on this series, but the last two episode have me hooked. I'm like WTF after the end of episode 6. It takes a while to pick up, but this series looks like it's going to be good.
VDesai @ 5/23/2011 11:04 AM
I friggin love this show. My favorite show on TV right now
BigDaddyG @ 6/14/2011 2:31 AM
"Your mother would still be a milkmaiden if I hadn't squirted you inside her belly." LMAO
The second half of this series has me hooked big time. Looking forward to season 2.

Episode 9 ended very dramatically. Episode 10 should as well, as I read the books so I know what is going to happen. And yet, I am "dying" to see the rest of the series.

The acting and directing have been phenomenal.

Can't wait to see how they end this and whether or not they continue with the other books. I had a tough time after book 3...they are massive volumes with too many characters. It's a bummer when your favorite characters keep dying...Eddard Stark, Cat Stark, etc...

Have been surprised at how the wolves haven't played a super central role in these plots b/c they did in the books. Either way, I"m hooked!!

HBO already signed to do the 2nd book. Casting for new parts has started.

Jusnice - FYI - book 5 will be released July 12th.

Have not read the books, so I was stunned at Sean Bean's exit.

A great show- wish they did more than 10 episodes for the first season. Uniformly well acted with interesting characters and excellent dialogue, which I assume comes from the books.

Band of Brothers, Deadwood, Rome, and now Game of Thrones have really pushed the bar up for historical (Or in the case of GoT, costume) dramas, and they've all come from HBO. Add Spartacus to the historical list, and Justified to the general list of cable series, and I'm a pretty happy guy as far as my limited TV viewing goes (actually- I download these shows from Pirate Bay).

Markji @ 6/20/2011 5:45 PM
The last episode for this year. Now will have to wait til next year for the continuation in book2.
Totally enjoyable.

Wish they had done everthing in a few more episodes. I will miss this show a great deal, and will probably start reading the books.
