I was noticing after the trade that Melo is a good defender...no, Melo is a very good defender....but when he digs in on defense, his offensive production goes down...often hitting the front of the rim prolly due to dead legs. Given the amount of energy he expends on the defensive end, i chock this up to conditioning...but then again, not everybody can put that much energy into both ends and still have fresh legs when it counts...
....so to answer my own question...what's wrong with melo?...he's playing good defense, that's what's wrong with him
he is not in good shape. if he uses much energy on defense, he does not have legs for offense.
he needs to work on his strength.
He's a step or two away from his sweet spot. His best shots are the two pointers from either the left or right side. This has been his finishing move. He makes the three pointers early in the game, when he's fresh, but as things go on, he doesn't make the adjustments so his shot hits the front of the rim.
He takes low percentage shots. You have to have amazing talent to be able to hit 45% of the shots that he takes; very few could do that and I think that's why people find him impressive. But a very difficult shot is still worth only 2 points.

indeed. with better trained brain, or with even a drop of intellect, he could be better than jordan.
damn genetics, though.

One of the best bad shot makers ever but I'm not enamored at his offensive shot making. Even when he's shooting/making 3s it just seems like he's chucking them. When he's moving the ball, passing to teammates(Effries down the lane for a bobble, should be Shelden or Turiaf), making teammates better and defending that's impressive. We already know what he's capable of offensively. Melo is not going to drop 30 every game especially now that the playoffs have started. He's had some very ugly games this year....nothing is wrong with him he is who we thought he was for the most part.
He was hot in the 2nd quarter and then rimmed a few out in the third and went cold in the 4th. It was one game and he literally was on fire for the entire last 2 weeks of the season, so I'll just chalk it up to a bad shooting night. I think he made a bad decision at the end of the game, but it was no timeouts and he probably didn't have that great of a feel for how much time was on the clock, and when he saw some space he decided to shoot. I was hoping Boston would foul us as that would've allowed us to re-set after and inbounds play. As it was, Melo missed a wide open Douglas, who had just hit the clutch shot earlier.
I'm not upset about the end of the game as much as I was upset about that decision made on that play. Seemed like no timeouts and we were unprepared, so we just handed the ball to Melo to let him freelance.

what is this but two ugly paragraphs for one word, choke.

you know, everyone dogs MDA for not taking more time outs when the Knicks get out of sync. so last night, that's exactly what he does. calls time out when the Celts cut it to 8 in the 3rd. then Billups get hurt and we're forced to take another timeout. now we have no timeouts for the final possession. just an example of how you can't win sometimes.
He won player of the week for two weeks running, carrying the team practically on his own to 7 straight wins. He has a lousy game and we're saying What's wrong w/ Melo? Come on. He cost us the game. No doubt. But that doesn't mean there's something wrong with him, just that he had an off night.

lol, come on, friend.
is not off night.
it is giant choke job.
you don't run streak hot for two weeks, and then, wow-- ice bucket cold for first playoff game.
is giant choke, man.

the thread, or atleast what I wrote, was meant to compliment melo on his defensive effort. The question really is...can offensive players expend that much energy playing defense and still make an impact on offense...or do they have to pick their spots...ok now, i'm going to lock down D...now I'm gonna score

this is stupid. good ballers can do both. certainly, ballers earning max money can do both.
you try to justify his bum-ness.
this is like trying to justify inner city school failure on lack of funds, when, in fact, these schools get more per pupil than good schools.
Fair enough. I don't see that as the issue. I don't think he was tired -- he didn't play that many minutes because of the fouls in the first -- but the issue as you frame it below is a legitimate one to debate. I'm hoping he'll keep playing tough D through this series and beyond so will have a bigger sample size to evaluate. My gut is it wasn't his D that hurt his offense. But I don't have any evidence of that other than he looked plenty energetic on both sides.

He is known to have poor conditioning. He even looked pudgy at he beginning of the season. He needs to work on it this off-season so he can be in shape for the playofs.
Maybe Celts played good defense.
Somtimes you lose.
Somtimes you get beat.
That game was not ours to lose, it was ours to win.
Celts just got it done.
Thats what was wrong with Melo.
There's nothing wrong with Melo. The C's won't be able to keep holding Melo down for the entire series. I think he'll adjust and break loose. Mike will go over the film with the team and point out what they did wrong on offense and we'll do a better job in the next game.
We can't overreact to one game and assume that Melo is some kind of choke artist.
One thing that would help a lot is to get Melo more catch and shoot off curls and more cuts to the basket where he can go to the hole without the help defenders having time to come over. When he tries to drive from way out on the floor it gives the C's time to collapse and help. This is why he needs to use the system to get open shots. Also if he does get the ball outside he should hold it and let the other Knicks make cuts to the basket and clear out their defender so that he can operate with more space and have passing options if they double him. STAT was patient and used the system. Melo has to do the same and not just barrel into the teeth of the D or take the shot they want him to take. Mike will help him make that adjustment.
I forced myself to watch this game and enjoyed it for the most part, until carmelo single handedly decides to lose us the game in the 4th quarter.
We would have been better off with Shawne Williams in there at the end.
You forced yourself to watch this game? What the hell?
I, for one, was forcing myself not to become so consumed with anticipating the game that I'd neglect my wife and kids for the rest of the weekend. Come on. If you're not pumped to watch our first playoff game in 7 years, you don't belong on this board.
You and Blob can have Shawne. I'll take Melo when we choose up for our 3 on 3.
