Landry Fields article (Apr 20 2011)

"Over the last four days, Landry Fields has been stoic and monotone as he answers questions about his preparedness, nervousness and readiness for his first playoff experience.

But upon returning to New York Wednesday, with Game 3 at Madison Square Garden awaiting Friday night, a frustrated Fields revealed some emotions on his Twitter account.

"Man, it's time, enough is enough," he said. "Let's do this."

The Knicks rookie, who started 81 of 82 games at shooting guard this season, has appeared lost on the court against the veteran Celtics. And as a result, he's getting lost on the bench.

Mike D'Antoni insisted on Monday, "My confidence is not shaken in him," but in both games Fields was not part of the rotation down the stretch.

Fields' troubles on offense clearly have D'Antoni looking elsewhere and the coach admitted before Game 2, "I'd be better served if I had more patience and kept him out there because we do need him and I trust him."

In crunch time in Game 2, however, D'Antoni went with Bill Walker (0-for-11) and veteran Roger Mason Jr. (1-for-4). Fields played just 5:05 in the second half and never got off the bench in the fourth quarter of the 96-93 loss.

On Sunday in Game 1, Fields played just 4:20 in the second half and not at all in the fourth quarter of the 87-85 loss.

Though he has tried to mask it, frustration with his diminished role is clearly building inside Fields, who had done a decent job defending his counterpart, 14-year veteran Ray Allen. Fields, the Stanford graduate, did "a pretty good amount" of cramming for this big test by studying video of Allen and the game's all-time three-point shooter's tendencies. "You just have to be there on the catch, he's a drop-dead shooter, everybody knows that," Fields said. "So you have to take away that and make him go to his second or third options."

Watching Allen drill three-pointers over the shorter defenders that D'Antoni has gone to, such as Toney Douglas and Anthony Carter, is undoubtedly maddening for the 6-7 Fields, who ached to be on the court.

"Yeah, every player wants to be out there and help out their team," Fields said. "Of course."

Allen has destroyed the Knicks from downtown, hitting seven of nine attempts, including 4-for-4 in Game 2. The Knicks entered the postseason with questions about the center position and their bench, but what has emerged is a bigger issue at shooting guard.

Fields has struggled to find a niche in the offense since the trade for Carmelo Anthony, which dramatically changed the look of the team and the offensive system. Before the trade, Fields averaged 10.1 points and 7.1 rebounds and shot 51.9 percent from the field. After the trade, his numbers fell to 9.1 points and 4.8 rebounds and 45.3-percent shooting."

Landry is still a rookie and he's never faced this level of competition. I really don't have a problem with the fact that he's struggled since it's understandable that he'd have issues in such a big stage on the road. I think our role players will probably play better at home. That boost of confidence you get from your home crowd should help.

I don't have a problem with his offense being down, simply because he defends Allen better than anyone else who has tried. I think it's terrible for the coach to pull him simply because we are better with a well defended Allen and not to mention no one else is scoring in his place.

This situation reminds me of an article back in november. D'antoni told Fields that he was cutting too much. Since then his rebounding numbers have dropped steadily and he doesn't seem to have the same nose for the ball that he had early in the season. Maybe D'Antoni should let "Fields be Fields" and see if that helps him and how it affects the team's performance. At least try to find a better balance, if not in the playoffs, then next season.

"With Landry Fields, Mike D'Antoni explained that the rookie's instinct is to be forever cutting on the offensive end. Fields is always moving.

That probably seems good. But it's not.

"He needs to cut sometimes. But he's cutting all the time. You have to understand when it is to cut and when you don't," D'Antoni said yesterday. "Because otherwise you cut right into Amar'e [Stoudemire] and you mess Amar'e up." "

Yeah. Much better to stand around and make sure he's not messing up Stat's moves. Maybe he should just drift over and talk to Spike during half court sets. The F-ING guy WENT TO STANFORD!!!! He's not a F-ING MORON, D'ANTONI!!!

You can take the boy out of West Vajinya, but you can't take the West Vajinya out of the boy...

I don't hate on D'Antoni, but sometimes, he sounds like an idiot. And the results bear out that if something's going good (Fields), don't F with it.

That MDA quote was from Nov 12th, and if you actually looked at the stats Landry's reb numbers did not drop off after that. They actually went up, and then started to decline as the season wore on (fatigue?) and especially after the Melo trade. Melo being a very good rebounder has affected Field's numbers.

My point was the errant logic in:

"Constant movement in basketball is a good thing; except when it's not"

Given, he's a rookie, but Dantoni's asking someone to stop moving. Which seems really really stupid.
Like playing Roger Mason in the playoffs.
Some coaches just need the "I can tinker" ego boost, I guess.

Let the F-cker's motor go, cut and run people into the ground. Especially against the overachieving geriatric crew we're up against now.

Fields provides ball movement, floor spacing and can finish at the rim.

Landry is a legit 6'8, so his size is desperately needed to supplement rebounding. Extra Credit to Bill Walker for crashing the boards, despite his 0-11, which I hope we never see again. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Fields that consistent minutes cannot fix. He is an excellent ballhandler. With Billups out, he can be trusted to advance the ball from the backcourt against light pressure.

He is young and has a great motor. He should play 35 minutes, minimum.

He dunks that same pass from Carmelo at the end.

Let Landry run!

I'm sure some of it has to do with Melo coming here but I don't believe it explains all of it. His numbers were declining before Melo arrived and he doesn't make as many of those hustle plays as he used to. I don't believe its fatigue because he plays better the less rest he has. It might be a combination of things. I do believe that he should be allowed to play to his strengths and letting him be more active might bring them back. I don't believe it will affect the rest of the team in a negative way. Only one way to find out.

Edit: Correction, looking at those numbers again he goes up statistically in points but drops in rebounding so its a wash as far as rest is concerned.

I think he should stop writing for the Post and get his game in place.

I saw the blog, it sounds like Field's performance is getting to him. They don't really run any plays for Fields to get him into a rhythm.

I agree with MDA..the 1st week melo was a knick fields cutting was becoming a problem..he started utting even more uase billups and melo never saw him in the corner..he's not making shots and that always hinders a rookies overall game, especially a good offensive player like him...You can tell his confidence is not all there..not to mention melos ability to rebound offensively, that really puts fields in a bad sitution.

His best bet is to work very hard on his perimeter game and let everything else will fall in place, even lay ups are becoming a challenge for him

it would be awesome if just once, after a stupendous play by Landry, the MSG announcer called it: LAN-DRY Fields! Hottest Rookie in the GaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMME!

The first weeks after the trade EVERYONE was struggling. To single out Fields, one of the brightest spots of a chaotic season is not only unfair, it's downright un-American.

Landry Fields should keep doing what he does until he runs out of oxygen because most of what he does is good. You wanna talk intangibles?

I got yo' intangibles right here!

Landry Fields makes the Knicks better because he always has his head up and knows how to dunk the basketball. He will make mistakes, but they are NEVER mistakes for lack of effort. Never. Landry plays with passion and makes the guys around him better because they TRUST him with he ball. Turnovers? Big freakin' deal. EVERYONE turns it over now and then. How many guys can star in a solo video with total strangers and make it entertaining? THAT, my friends, is a perfect example making the people around you better.

Do you want Jared Jeffries at the receiving end of a Carmelo pass... or Landry Fields?

Do you want Roger Mason Jr on Ray Allen... or Landry Fields?

Do you want Toney Douglas dribbling the ball AWAY from the hoop, or Landry Fields driving to the rack with authority?

It's time to stand up and be counted!

"We want Land-Ree!"

Celtics are trying to create a rhythm for him. The ball is finding Fields and he isn't able to do anything with the ball he is being to tentative and thinking to much let it fly if your open. MDA can sense when a player is tentative on offense. Put it this way Celtics are purposely leaving Fields alone similar to what Knicks are doing to Rondo.

Can't you just see Fields standing, head tilted up, in front of the unfurled American flag... or dressed as Uncle Sam...
I WANT PLAYING TIME!

Stinking Dantoni's probably a closet socialist pig.

Much as been reported about Fields' numbers dropping after Carmelo. True, but a drop in scoring by 1 point from 10 to 9? Come on!

I bet the writers kind of feel bad about calling out 1pt, particularly when his minutes dropped by about 10%, the same amt his scoring dropped.

His rebounding fell from an out of this world 7 (best by an NBA SG) to 4.8 (still top 5 among NBA SGs) is not very significant.

Two things I would have changed would have been getting Fields in the game in the 4th (though the argument against this was that Walker was out of this world with his rebounding...), and of course, swapping in Shawne Williams for our last offensive possession.

jrodmc - it ain't that deep.

D'Antoni simply needs to trust Landry for the same things that don't show up in the boxscore that he trusts Jeffries for.

At least Landry can dunk in traffic.
