Knicks · New coach please (page 3)

MSG3 wrote:The problem with D'Antoni is that Walsh seeks his input in roster decisions. And D'Antoni doesn't like traditional roles for the players. This is why Walsh or whoever is our GM has to think about how committed the franchise is to this coach. If we are very committed we need to go after a guy like Nash or another very good PG. If our GM feels that Dantoni isn't the long term answer and keeps him for next year, we still need a PG but maybe our priority needs to be a Center and some help with depth.

Personally, I would rather we go in a different direction. Mike doesn't make adjustments. He doesn't coach Defense. He doesn't draw up situational plays. He trusts his players to a fault. If offense isn't working we have no chance.

I thought this before the trade and I think it now. His style only works if the roster is perfect. And even when it was in Phoenix they couldn't get past the WCF. I dont want to waste another year of this nucleus' prime. But unfortunately unless Phil Jackson shows interest I don't know who else is the answer. Maybe Lawrence Frank? Marc Jackson? Rick Adleman? Patrick Ewing?

You have to wonder why Brewer and Brown were acquired one not being flipped somewhere else(Boston) and the other playing similar positions on team becoming redundant if he's in deep discussion with his coach on acquisitions. We can go on to list players from the previous season.

Do we have any assistant coaches? Herb "I wear the same tie as MDA" Williams ? Nope. Hmm, how about our defensive guru "the other D'Antony"? He gives some good interviews and says all the right things, always. Guy is clutch when it comes to giving interviews. Nope, again. So all the assistant coaching duties must be done by that 3rd guy. Whats his name. . . ehh. I dunno. I think only our announcers know the answer to that trivia question. Ok, so we don't even have an assistant coach that another team would want to hire as a head coach, which btw, I think is a great indication that your head coach is not a scrub. As far as MDA, I like him. He is not a top level coach by no stretch of imagination, and everyone who knows BBall and watches Knicks can come up with at least one of many reasons to say why. Do I want a new coach? Well , I don't want to be punked every time we play against a top tier coach, however we probably cannot land a top tier coach ourselves, unless of course Sloan is bored already. P. Jax ? Hehe, thats just a funny joke, do you remember what happened when Jordan came out of retirement the last time around? Well, I am sure P. Jax does and will think about it 50 times before declining. So, it will be hard to find an upgrade to MDA as much as I would like to find an upgrade to our coaching staff (this includes the assistant coaches, except Herb Williams, that guy gotta be breaking some records with how he never gets replaced)
JesseDark @ 4/24/2011 9:26 PM
I want a coach whose idea of getting stops is more than saying in the huddle, "C'mon on fellas we need a stop here."
nixluva @ 4/24/2011 10:02 PM
Coaches always look better when they have what they need to win. Some here really believe that if we played Randolph, Brewer, Shelden, AC or Brown that it would make the difference between us winning or not? Once CB and STAT got injured it really changed things. The Knicks were already underdogs.

IMO changing the coach isnt the answer no more than it was for the Celtics to get rid of Doc when he was losing big before they added KG and Allen. There's no real difference in the two situations. The most important thing is what the GM does to complete the roster upgrade. If Mike could get his teams to the WCF's there's no reason in the world he can't lead this team to the ECF's so long as we improve the team where needed.

I agree with what you're saying here, but the fact that D'antoni is probably the least defensive minded head coach in the history of the game is grounds for his dismissal.

holfresh wrote:How is it a coach like Doc can add Lawarence Frank to help him defensively after losing a good defensive coach and MDA laughs when you suggest a defensive assistant?
I don't think D'Antoni laughs but he is offended by the suggestion because it goes against his philsophies as a coach and I think he is very insecure about his position. This thread isn't just about his lack of end game coaching in this series or his teams lethargy in game three, and his horrible substitutions and reliance on guys like Jeffries. This guy has not been the right choice from day 1 in my opinion. I think he needs to be judged by his body of work here as well as his ineffectiveness in this series.

Carrion feeders come after carrion. Which is what mda basketball + the knicks seem to produce.

Yeah, the last I checked, carrion feeding doesn't win championships either. But people will do what they are able to do. Bon Apetit, my dear eater of the dead (death eater?)

You're right I can't help the Knicks as a player or a coach win the championship. What was your point? carrion feeder or scavenger is probably an appropriate label.

nixluva wrote:Bulls are not the best team in basketball! They had the best regular season record but that doesn't make them the absolute best in BB.

There's no way MDA gets fired due to this sweep. If we step back and remember that this team wasn't deep after the trade we couldn't afford to have 2 of our big 3 hobbled. How good would the C's look if they lost Rondo and KG? This bashing is a bit over the top. When we went toe to toe in game 1&2 the team was playing tough BB even tho we had key injuries in both games!!! Why do we have to pretend this was a fair fight?

Bulls are better than the Cs' who played like crap losing half their games in the last 20. Looked weak and vulnerable. Untill they met us.

If the refs do a better job we win game 1.

You're going to blame the coach when our best player is injured, the starting pg on a thin squad can't go and you have to rely on the two worst starter in the playoffs and a bunch of guys that are lucky to be in the league.

Let's not forgot we had a lead in both games in Boston playing at half strength.

Give Rivers the same squad the outcome is the same.

Switch Rondo and Douglas and be beat the Celtics into the ground. That has nothing to do with coaching.

Andrew @ 4/25/2011 10:31 AM
Doc Rivers should be fired for almost losing the first 2 games.

Agreed. Then we could sign him.

MDA needs to concentrate on defense 100%. If you have a HALF AZZED approach to defense then the team will play it half azzed defense. Full commitment must be made to defense.

Doc couldn't win a thing in Boston before KG n Allen. Doc only won 33 games then the next year only 23 games the 2 seasons just before they put the big 3 together. Should he have been fired?
He had been good coach before those dreadful seasons and once they added KG n Allen he won 66 games and a title! Ainge used good judgement and kept Doc and concentrated on improving the roster. That's what we need to do here.

Do you have a transcript of his thoughts?

A transcripts of his practices or time outs?

nykshaknbake @ 4/25/2011 2:26 PM
Like you have said many times nixluva, why are you looking at the -insert past time period_? All I care about is now and it looks like Doc RIvers has won a championship and been to the finals and is advancing to the 2nd round NOW. Double standard.

He probably could have been justifiably fired back then. I didn't follow the Celtics back then at all. But he's been coaching well since the turnaround. He certainly out coached your dad this series. Let me ask you what is a coach's job?

you don't see any type of parallel?

Just keep firing coaches until the right one gets you to finals?

As usual you totally missed the point I was making. The reason I brought up the past is cuz Doc looked just as lost and inept when he didnt have the horses. Then magically the year he gets KG n Allen he wins 66 games and a title!!! Gee he got so much better once he got 2 HOF'ers. Suddenly it all fell into place and Doc was good again!

I guarantee that MDA will be a lot better as soon as we make the needed improvements. Both TD and Fields had rough 1st playoff showings. They're kids and I'm sure they were a bit overwhelmed. But im glad Mike played them despite that. They'll be better for the experience.
