Knicks · Purchasing Draft picks (page 1)

NYKBocker @ 5/13/2011 10:57 AM
I was looking at the draft board searching for which teams might possibly sell their picks and I came up with these teams.

Chicago - They have a really deep team. One would assume that they only need a little bit of tweaking for next year. They also have 10 players signed for next year. Only their veterans are not signed. They are already young and probably want their vets signed back in 1 year deals. They have 2 late 1st round picks in #28 and #30 and a 2nd rounder #44. The smart move is to move these assets. We can probably buy either the #28 or #30 pick.

Oklahoma City - Another deep team. They have 13 signed for next year. They have the 24th pick which probably will not crack the rotation. Not sure what is their financial state but a small market team could use more dough and selling this pick might be the right move.

Minnesota - They are a young team. They have 11 signed for next year. They will need some vets in the squad to balance out the team. Might be better for them to sell their 20th pick.

We really need to purchase 2 more picks for this years draft and let Donnie do his magic in the draft. We need to replenish the cupboard.

If Darius Morris is still available id buy a pick together with rautins and grab him...dude is a perfect complement to douglas

that may mean though the end of Anthony Carter

Or Darius Morris can do the Jerome Jordan Route... go to europe.... Europe plays a team game o it would be intresting to see him Grow there as a player

I think From this year forward we need to do a "spurs" in terms of drafting meaning we send them to europe then grab them when they are ready.. We are now becoming contenders we dont need players learning the ropes....We need players who are ready to contribute.

Not a bad idea for 2nd rounders, but with the state of our team, we need some bodies now. So we have to bite the bullet on any first rounders we get and let them stay in the roster.

BRIGGS @ 5/13/2011 4:18 PM
If I can use fields + the 17th pick to move up and get Kanter--maybe look at picking up an early 2 for a guy like Marshon brooks--he could be a steal like fields was.

Probably could move Fields/fodder to the Clippers for one of their picks

y2zipper @ 5/13/2011 5:07 PM
I wouldn't move Fields for a pick unless it was a high first rounder. Fields is still a good player even though he needs a jumpshot and we shouldn't be so quick to move him.

Clippers have high first rounders

y2zipper @ 5/13/2011 5:48 PM
The Clippers traded their pick to the Cavaliers in the Mo Williams deal. They only have picks 37 and 47, so they don't even have a first-rounder this year.

Exsqueeze me as I am wrong. I was meaning to say Cleveland is the team to trade him to as I was thinking them but saying Clippers(the trade made you're referring to). Cleveland has the high picks this summer

I want this to happen to Darius Morris because I want anthony Carter in the team next year. That guy is just perfect for us. He sets up the offense pushes the ball and plays GREAT D..

Darius Morris will benefit from playing overseas with all the minutes he can get in europe..

we will be deep next year I fully believe alot of players will go to NY for cheap

We need Morris here if we can get him. The idea is OJT behind Chauncey, so that if we need his 14.2 mil contract, we can let him go, 'cause we've got an adequate replacement.

I would only use fields if I could get Kanter or Irving(and Irving is not happening) If draftexpress is right and Kanter has a chance to fall to 8---then Id be very willing to offer Fields + 17 to anyone 4-7 if he was available. fields is replaceable and didnt play as well with CA here. But he has good value either as a player for the Knicks or used to get a quality big man.

I would trade Fields straight up for a mid to high lottery pick. But I think we are too thin to do a 2 for 1 trade by including our pick in the deal. We have a lot of needs to fill.

The pairing of Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony gives the Knicks plenty of offensive firepower, but the team could use some help on the defensive end of the floor. Stoudemire is a fine shot blocker, but the rest of the squad doesn’t have much in the way of defensive talent.

Chris Singleton was the emotional leader of the best defensive team in college basketball last season. His Florida State squad held opponents to 36.4 percent shooting from the field, the best figure in the country…for the last ten years.

there's more at the above link. It would indeed be a fine fit Singleton would likely contribute immediately though he isn't the best rebounder in the class he does gain his team a lot of extra possessions

Nalod @ 5/15/2011 10:21 AM
Don't forget, JJ was once thought of pretty highly coming out of college.

We need a man who can do it in a mans game.

Want to draft for the future thats fine. As long as Amare has some beef on the front line to guard the bigs.

unstopaball12 @ 5/15/2011 10:24 AM
i really like singleton am actually torn between him or faried but i like faried more because singleton plays the same spot as MELO and we desperately need a rebounder

this is what i like about our draft standing...

there are so many unknowns who are in the lottery but our spot is full of role players..

Nalod @ 5/15/2011 10:38 AM

Does anyone know how many picks get bought and sold the last few years?

with Euros gettng drafted and staying abroad I would think teams with full rosters still prefer to have player assets growing than a short cash infusion.

This is how I would go. If we could trade Fields for a 13-18 pick, we could probably get D. Morris, and maybe one of the Morris twins.

Mock drafts has Kanter being picked 3-5. You think Fields and the 17th pick is enough for the #3 pick? Possible teams picking in those spots are Toronto, Washington and Sacramento. I don't think those teams have a need for Fields.

Nalod @ 5/16/2011 10:57 AM
Objectively, and thats hard to do for us, is to really understand how good Lando can be?

That is what sets his value.

Is he eventually a six man like Manu was on the best of the Spur teams? A guy that plays the 2 or 3.

Manu was a good outside shooter and Lando has to work on that above all.

But what is his value to us and as a trade?

NYKBocker @ 5/17/2011 10:37 AM
We need to purchase 2 second round picks and draft this 2 cats.

NBA Comparison: Waymon Tisdale

Strengths: Has a tremendous package of size and strength for an 18 year old freshman (born January 1991) ... Has the body and willingness to play physically inside the paint ... Has a huge frame with wide shoulders and thick legs making it difficult to move him around in the post. It's scary to think how strong he will be in a few years ... Unlike many players with his dimensions, Smith has nice agility and athleticism ... Also shows excellent quickness on post moves ... Has excellent hands to corral rebounds and post passes ... Already showing signs of a developing post game, which should continue to expand as he becomes more the focal point of the offense ... Very strong attacking the rim converting on a lot of And-1s ... Strength allows him to convert well after contact ... Gets a lot of ally oop and put back dunks ... A coachable kid with a strong work ethic ... Shows an excellent attitude and eagerness to improve ... Hustles for rebounds and appears to play with a high motor at all times ... Shows nice touch on his shot with the ability to convert on baby hooks ... Shows good use of both hands in the post ...

Weaknesses: While he appears to be an excellent post prospect, his post game remains very raw. Post moves need refinement. He should develop some drop step moves and work with coaches on developing a few go to moves ... Needs to improve from the free throw line (shooting around 50% from the FT line 9 games info his freshman season). This becomes particularly important considering his bruising style of game and amount of trips to the line he figures to get in the future ... Needs to improve on his shooting range ... Better conditioning will help his transition game. Right now much more effective in the half court ... He's a little pigeon toed, and isn't great at running the floor but should be able to improve that with effort put into conditioning ... Defensively he gives good effort but is not a force as a shot blocker. Could develop these skills in the future but appears to be more explosive on the offensive end of the floor ...

NBA Comparison: Steven Hunter

Strengths: Late blooming bigman "hiding out" at mid major Oakland University ... An excellent athlete particularly considering his size ... Owns a big wingspan (7-foot-2 roughly) ... Showed a lot of improvement between his freshman and sophomore seasons (5.2 & 3.5 to 14.3 & 7.8) ... Appears to still have a fair amount of room to improve ... Great in the open floor, runs very well ... Offensive skills are a work in progress but beginning to show nice development ... Has a solid jump hook ... Excellent touch on mid range shots ... Effectively uses the glass ... Completes a lot of ally oop dunks ... Shows nice touch and the ability to effectively use both hands around the basket ... Uses his size well to create a big target in the post, and displays solid footwork ... Does a good job fighting for low post position ... Also shows the ability to put the ball on the deck effectively ... Good rebounder with understanding of position ... Appears to be highly coachable. Plays with solid intensity and a growing understanding of the game ... Does a good job of protecting the ball and limiting turnovers.

Weaknesses: Strength is his biggest hurdle. Still needs to add a lot of core strength ... At his current weight, he'll get pushed around in the paint at the next level ... Born in 1988, there is still hope that he can add a fair amount of muscle ... Will need to put weight on without affecting his mobility ... Appears 3-4 years of work in the weight room away from finding his optimum playing weight ... Needs to prove himself against better competition ... Level of competition leaves a lot to be desired ... Makes a lot of impressive plays, but how he plays against players his own level is a bit of a mystery ... More proficient playing on the right block ... Decent free throw shooter at 67%, should look to improve some.
