Knicks · Selby has A+ workout with Knicks... (page 2)

Selby is listed at 6'3" with shoes. Not 6'4". And IIRC, Selby said on one interview that he was 6'2". However, I do like his potential and he is one of the people I would target. There are a number of players I would take. It all depends who is left by the 17th pick.

We lack a true breakdown guard and I'd love to add one. Our need for another PG is huge. It's almost as important as a C. There will be guards right there to be had so...

earthmansurfer wrote:I don't mean to sound judgemental and the kid is only 20 but does anyone know about his BBIQ? The PG needs more BBIQ than most other positions and I think we saw Westbrook getting by on athleticism and then making bad decisions late in games.

Yes, 84. (Please note that the "Basketball Intelligence Quotient" does not correlate directly with the standard "Intelligence Quotient.")

Selby is the better athlete, scorer but from what I've seen of Morris, he's a better passer and looks to have more of a pg mentality.

But who is the better fit for us especially looking at the teams (Heat, Celts, etc) ahead of us. I think we need a third scorer at some point and right now we are not getting that from the 2 (Fields) or the 5(?). Selby would give us that third scorer at the point, similar to Billups. If Fields is in the future plans, Selby might not be a bad look at all. Personally, I wouldn't mind the Knicks taking a long look at Brooks.

My top three at 17 are:

M. Brooks
Selby
Morris

For the needs of the team, your top 3 are great options. I,m looking at either Selby or Brook as the #17 pick. Any of the three would be an upgrade to our situation. Still a staunch advocate of additional draft picks. For such a "weak" draft, we could find several serviceable players.

When it came time to drafting Eric Gordon during the 08' draft.... the one Gallo was in... you know the draft in which we needed a guard(because Crawford was surely on the trading block) with 2010 on the sunrise fans made excuses of drafting a short 6'3" guard. Gordon was maybe one of the most elite collegiate offensive threats at the time not to mention possessed the skillsets to perform in this sytem. We didn't need a hybrid 4(Gallo) that's for sure and yet once it was known who we set our sights on, it was jocked. I see a false inversion 08' going on here at the moment

Basically once we know who we're locked in on, the pick is going to be endorsed no matter the position played or who they are.

A lot of people said the same of Russell Westbrook. Hard to tell how the game will translate to the NBA sometimes.

WestBrook in his 3rd year is now receiving some of the harshest criticism of his career as a POINT GUARD.

I have no doubt Josh Selby is talented. My issue is where is his minutes going to come from when we are trying to win ASAP.

I'd shop him too a team like Memphis who is looking to trade Mayo since they dont want to pay him. Mayo is ready to contribute right now not in 2 years.

I'd go with taking the "best player available", except not a 3 where we have Melo and Shawn Williams. Reason being is that at pick#17, you're not going to get the top talent. We have many needs. Some can be filled by the draft. Some by FA. Back-up point guard - maybe Anthony Carter. He played well. Center? Maybe we can sign Samuel Dalembert? So right now it's a guessing game. Have to see how this all plays out and who is left on the table for us to pick at #17.?? Selby? Singleton? Faried? Vucevic(C); and the man I want - Biyombu. Probably need to trade up for him.

Since we don't have a first round pick next year, we have to make a good choice this year. And buy more picks if we can.

I think Selby has a higher upside than Mayo. He's got that added athletic ability that can push him over the top. It's what separates D. Rose from other guards. We need that component on this roster. Marshon Brooks and Iman Shumpert have great athletic ability too. Darius Morris a little less but he has great size and high BB IQ. I just don't think we need to trade this pick. We're gonna have a 5 year window. Why think so short sighted?

John Selby is Nate Robinson. Nothing more, nothing less.

We are looking for a legit shooting guard or a legit PG. He is none of those.

Some perspective. Coming out of high school last year Selby and Irving (this years #1 pick) were neck and neck in the rankings. Selby had a "bad" injury and was in a restrictive system. I'm not saying he is the answer, but he could be the best value by a landslide at 17.

I can see what you mean that he is not a legit pg, but that is only going from small sample set. He is such a great talent that he needs to be looked closely at. BPA and not need - unless the players are really close.

edit - Nate was and is a headcase, the only similarity is the athleticism and scoring potential.

I can't believe Nate Robinson is trying to sneak back onto the team by inhabiting another person's body. That's just wrong.

StephNYKurry posted this on another board, think it's worth reposting here:

I'm going to name you the consensus Top 5 players coming out of high school over the past 5 years and you can tell me which ones didn't translate to the college game.

2006: Greg Oden, Kevin Durant, Brandon Wright, Ty Lawson, Spencer Hawes
2007: O.J Mayo, Kevin Love, Derrick Rose, Eric Gordon, Michael Beasley
2008: Brandon Jennings (Didn't go), B.J. Mullens, Demar Derozen, Jrue Holiday, Samardo Samuels
2009: Derrick Favors, John Wall, John Henson, Avery Bradley, DeMarcus Cousins
2010: Harrison Barnes, Enes Kanter (Didn't Go), Kyrie Irving, Josh Selby, Jared Sullinger

Only ONE of those guys sucked in college and B.J Mullens never had the mentality necessary for him to be a great player.

Selby's situation is one of extraneous circumstances. Selby's performance is NOWHERE NEAR an accurate representation of his actual talent level. From the suspension to the injuries, to adjusting to a bench role...it was a rough year, but by in large, he is back to what he was in high school, which is a great place to move forward from.

In my opinion, if Selby comes out of High School, he probably goes Top 15 EASY and could possibly crack the Top 10. He's that good.

Puts things in perspective. However those guys need/needed playing time to grow. They arent going to grow sitting on the bench collecting splinters.

Josh Selby is going to be a very good pro player. Please stop with the he's Nate stuff and I like Nate btw.

All you have to do is look at the video of him now and you can see with your own eyes just how talented the kid is. I've come to the realization that he's a very likely candidate for the Knicks given the level of connection we have with him. Melo is his mentor and friend. Melo's agent has had dealings with the kid for a long while now. Billups was working with the kid in prep for the combines and workouts. It would seem to me that the chances are very high that NY ends up taking this kid. Especially when you look at how he's somewhat undervalued right now.

Selby looks good to me. If he's there at 17, we should strongly consider him, particularly in light of his friendship with Melo.
