Lupica's article today and others point to basically Dolan's desire to become close bedfellows with the CAA as part of the "move" with Donnie. Supposedly they weren't happy with how Walsh handled Curry. Really? Eddy Curry?!? That guy was responsible for his problems, NOT the Knicks, its coaches, or management. If they're really going to hold something like that over the Knicks, they are crap. I guess they were angry about how Curry won't get another big payday and they won't get their commission?
Allying yourself with a player/talent agency in any way, let alone so overtly, is stupid. But we are talking about Dolan and Thomas, so we shouldn't be surprised. I love Melo, he's one of m favorite players in the league, but if this is the ultimate cost of his acquisition, I think the CAA partnership is the worst part of the deal. We can get new role players and rebuild depth, but if agents start controlling how the team does business...that's bad.
Unfortunately it's part of the new reality. These mega agencies exert great power. They have the players teams want and if you cross them they can make your life miserable when you want to make deals or sign a player they control. An owner can't afford to make enemies with those guys. If you have to choose between a GM and the wishes of a mega agency you have to think very carefully.
I don't know what influence CAA had or didn't regarding Walsh, but you can't underestimate their influence in BB in general.
How is this agency allowed to monopolize star players and dictate sh*t like this?
The Knicks better be getting CP3 on the cheap if CAA really is forcing the weak minded owner's hand.
yet another way to alienate me as a fan. this type of nonsense really frustrates me. now a team has to just suck it up and accept fat lazy slobs like Curry out of fear that they might be blacklisted by his mega-agency that has monopolized all the top players. couple that with a buffoon owner whose fascination with big stars has obscured any chance of building a true team in a stable winning culture. what exactly am i left to connect with? i don't relate to this garbage.
will CAA get its clients to play in NY for less than market value?
Collude this: Buy a ton of MSG stock and stack the franchise to win. Ratings and profits go up. Do the same for Rangers.
Think a building and a network can raise its value thru two teams reaching the pinnacle of its respective league repeatedly over a 10 period and not make its shareholders happy?
I think Lupica doing some "Davinchi code" conspiracy slant adding sizzle to the story.
I think this is just what is happening.

It's just so hard to fathom because we're talking about Eddie Curry. This guy is a scrub, one that once had some real potential but he and he alone threw that away. You shouldn't have to play bad players just because you're paying a ton of money. They got the cash guaranteed, now they have prove that they are worth it. Curry was incapable of doing this. So the agents or agency that backs a crappy player like Curry and tries to exert there will by having their people--whom Zeke counts himself among--influence the owner is crap.

What's more LeBron has a stake in the agency, so he's sort of indirectly or otherwise one of the bosses of the guys handling his competition. Are Melo and the other guys "allowed" to beat LeBron? Or are they just allowed to keep it competitive?

Can't see how this type of thing is not a conflict of interest matter which the NBA will have to address at some point.
In a competitive sport where a player going to this team or another can change the balance of power in the sport, they have to come up with some rules regulating the amount of influence players can have in private companies who can influence where a player will sign.

If they get caught, it will be all over for their agency.

It seems like a conflick of interest. Sterns and the league knows whats going on and for all of the teams to survive changes will have to be made. And they will.
